DFA Records/ XL Recordings present: Friendly Fires vs. Holy Ghost!

Friendly Fires VS. Holy Ghost!

(DFA / XL Recordings, March 8, 2010)”On Board” covered by Holy Ghost!,

‘Hold On / On Board’ will be available on the following formats:
A1. Friendly Fires – Hold On
A2. Friendly Fires – Hold On (Instrumental)
B1. Holy Ghost – On Board
B2. Holy Ghost – On Board (Instrumental)
1. Friendly Fires – Hold On
2. Friendly Fires – Hold On (Instrumental)
3. Holy Ghost – On Board
4. Holy Ghost – On Board (Instrumental)
5. Holy Ghost – On Board (Dub)

It started off as a drunken conversation at Corsica’s Calvi Rocks festival in July 2009. Friendly Fires had just played live, Holy Ghost had just finished DJing, and in the post-gig haze the decision was made by each band to cover one of the other’s songs.
Eight months later and here are the quite brilliant results. Friendly Fires were the first to honour the agreement, finishing 2009 in the studio with a superb take on the DFA duo’s ‘Hold On’ classic. Meanwhile, Holy Ghost’s cover of ‘On Board’ took a little longer – sessions vanished, vocal tracks mysteriously vanished, hard drives were fractured and somewhere in the middle of it, the duo lost their close friend Jerry Fuchs, whose awe-inspiring drumming is at the core of this version of ‘On Board’. The results are equally special.

At this point, an artist like Martyn needs no introduction. Widely hailed as a leader when it comes to pushing sonic boundaries, particularly in the world of dubstep, we here at XLR8R are simply ecstatic that he’s put together an exclusive mix for our weekly podcast series. Fresh off the release of his genre-hopping Fabric 50 mix, here Martyn gets even more schizophrenic, somehow assembling a cohesive listen while delving into classic house and techno, heady hip-hop, avant-garde beats, new-wave pop, and more—he even kicks things off with a little bit of chillwave. Refusing to limit himself to a single sound or style, Martyn always pilots a unique course—the fun part is following along on the journey.

Heligoland’ Debuts At # 46 On The Billboard 200 Marking Highest U.S. Chart Position Of The Duo’s Career

Massive Attack’s arsenal has expanded and the resulting onslaught is nothing short of brilliant.” – Billboard Magazine

more menacing than midnight in the darklands. Welcome back- you’ve been missed terribly.” – Alternative Press

Much of ‘Heligoland’ works like this – a dour, glitchy intro of impeccable atmospherics implacably winds its way into something panoramic and exhilarating.” – Los Angeles Times

Heligoland still prizes the minimalism that always made Massive Attack seem so cool” – New York Daily News

Legendary Massive Attack will tour North America for the first time since 2006 in support of their newly released 5th studio album ‘Heligoland.’ The North American trek will start May 7th at Sound Academy in Toronto, ON and wrap May 30th at the Sasquatch Festival in George, WA. They will play 2 shows in NYC, Los Angeles and San Francisco with general on sale beginning March 5th (full schedule below).

Massive Attack’s latest album ‘Heligoland’ was released on Feb 9th on EMI’s Virgin Records and debuted at #46 on the Billboard 200, marking the highest U.S. chart position of the duo’s career. An all star cast join founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grand Marshall (Daddy G) on their first studio album in 7 years which includes Damon Albarn, Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Elbow’s Guy Garvey and TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe. USA Today praises the collaborator’s contributions on ‘Heligoland’ by saying, “They give the gloomy grooves and chilled beats a heartbeat but also step into Massive Attack’s otherworldly sonics with enticingly haunted performances.” Albarn also plays bass on “Flat Of The Blade” and Keyboards on “Splitting The Atom” while Portishead’s Adrian Utley plays guitar on ‘Saturday Come Slow’. The band also collaborated with DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy on selected tracks. The cover artwork features an original image by Robert Del Naja.

Over the last three years Robert Del Naja has written and produced soundtracks for a number of films and documentaries, including ‘Trouble In The Water’, ’44 Inch Chest’, ‘In Prison My Whole Life’ and ‘Gomorra’, the latter for which he won the David Di Donatello Award for Best Song. Last year Massive Attack won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award at the Ivor Novello Awards. In September, Massive Attack headlined this year’s Bestival ahead of their first full UK tour in three years.

Deadbeat Vampire EP

Posted in Dub Techno, Electronic on February 25, 2010 by dk

Heavily insistent dub techno from Deadbeat on the latest Echocord catalogue number. ‘vampire’ comes in two versions, with the relentless throb of the original offset by spacious dub rhythms and surging bass for the skankers, while the Dub leans on a wicked halfstepped dub vibe reminding strongly of ‘2’ era Pole. That’s always a very good thing in our minds and should be no small indication that you need to check this out!(boomkat, listen, buy here)

Living up to his unrivalled reputation as one of the most versatile and capable producers in electronic music, Mark Pritchard rolls off two of his most deadly riddims for Mala’s Deep Medi stable. If you’ve not caught one of Mark’s releases as Harmonic 313, Jedi Knights, Reload or Global Communications you need to go and do some revision mate, but if you’ve been keeping track of the last 20 years of dance music you’ll know what we’re talking about. The steamroller subs of ‘Elephant Dub’ are crushingly heavy, creating a dense pressure that causes the snares to ping off the surface with spring-loaded velocity and taking out weakheart dancers in the process. ‘Heavy As Stone’ on the flip alleviates the pressure with a dose of Sun-Ra styled Vitamin D, licking soul-stirring female vox, elegiac keys and even a glimmer of likembe over 4/4 steppers patterns, all anchored with that sublime bass-weight. This is heart-in-the-mouth material, tears on the dancefloor anthem (boomkat, listen, buy here)
