FACT mix 138: A Guy Called Gerald

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on April 5, 2010 by dk

If the name A Guy Called Gerald doesn’t mean anything to you, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

A founding member of 808 State, Manchester’s Gerald Simpson helped create some of acid house’s most future-rushing and globally successful moments. He worked on the ‘State’s Newbuild LP and Quadrastate EP (home to ‘Pacific State’) before going solo, and hitt #12 in the UK charts with the completely nuts ‘Voodoo Ray’.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Simpson began to embrace influences from the nascent hardcore scene, issuing a number of groundbreaking 12″s on his Juicebox label that culminated in the release of the 1992 album 28 Gun Bad Boy (check the title track for an all-time British soundsystem classic). He followed in 1995 with the gloriously knotted, soulful and uniquely psychedelic Black Secret Technology, arguably the finest jungle LP ever made.

While many producers of the same vintage have settled for a life of creative water-treading, stuck-in-a-timewarp DJ sets and dodgy film cameos, Gerald has really kept his end up, and then some. Relocating to Berlin some years ago, he has focussed his sound into an instantly recognisable brand of sleek, organic techno, releasing records on labels like Sender and Perlon. Next month he’s set to release Tronic Jazz, his second LP for the Laboratory Instinct imprint, and this Saturday, April 10, he’ll be headlining Feeding Werk, a very special night at Plan B in Brixton, celebrating the sounds of Werk Discs (home to Actress, Lone and Lukid, who’ll all be making appearances, along with Pariah, Dave ID and more).

Guido – ‘Anidea’ Album – Punch Drunk Records – May 2010 (+Preview)

Guido – ‘Anidea’

Release Date MAY 2010

‘Anidea’ is the debut album from young Bristol based producer Guido, who alongside Joker and Gemmy, has trail blazed his way to the forefront of UK dance music. His two 12” releases, ‘Orchestral Lab’ and ‘Beautiful Complication’ on Peverelist’s Punch Drunk label in 2009, and recently completed remixes for Island Records and Tectonic Records, have garnered Guido extensive press coverage from specialist underground blogs to The Guardian broadsheet.
This album is the first to emerge from the trio, who have already made an indelible mark on UK underground music.

Guido cut his teeth in the embryonic mid-decade Bristol Grime scene, producing instrumental’s for MCs and vocalists culminating in his ‘Unleashed’ mixtape in 2006. His production style shares the ultra vivid colour, melody and rugged texture of golden era Davinche, Skepta and Ruff Squad’s Rapid but also the playfulness and pop sensibility of Timbaland or Neptunes without losing underground edge or appeal.

The album will be preceded by a digital single, ‘Way U Make Me Feel’ featuring a vocal from Yolanda who has recently been touring with Massive Attack and who also featured on Pinch’s recent ‘Get Up’ 12” on Tectonic.

ESKAMON is the new collaboration project between Amon Tobin (Ninja Tune) & Eskmo (Warp, Planet Mu) and the duo’s first single – “Fine Objects” – is set for release April 5th on Eskmo’s own imprint, Ancestor Media.

“Fine Objects” is the result of the pair’s unique take on sonic exploration and the manipulation of field recordings. From the onset, the two went out with a recorder, gathering sounds from around the house, yard and studio. Material recorded out of the studio included sounds from a parking garage elevator, a broken harp and the droning tones from a discarded piano. These were combined with more home-centric sounds to form the central theme to the song.

Musician, programmer, recording artist, beatsmith, dance floor commander, composer, sound designer, bad ass motherf*cker. Amon Tobin is all of these things but most of all a forward thinker. Pushing forward and never looking back has always been his focus. This is what gets him up in the morning and what keeps him up late into night. Regarded as one of the foremost influential “experimental” electronic artists of the past decade, he has released numerous singles and seven major studio albums under the mighty London-based Ninja Tune.

Brendan Angelides is a San Francisco based electronic music producer who records and performs live as Eskmo. In the past five years he’s released over a dozen singles and EPs while performing throughout North America and Europe. In the past two years his multi-genre compositions have been released on influential labels including Warp Records and Planet Mu, while also remixing works by diverse artists such as Bibio, Spor, STS9 and Bar9.
The newest Eskmo track – “Sister, You Have Got To Listen” is available for FREE exclusively at – download the track here!

The digital release is set for an April 5th worldwide release date and the pair plans on giving out a free WAV sample pack of all the sounds created for the track directly from

Recomposed by Matthew Herbert Mahler Symphony X (Deutsche Grammophon)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 5, 2010 by dk

Matthew Herbert has been tapped by Deutsche Grammophon’s for the next edition of its ReConfigured series.

It will be the fourth entry, following work from Armann Matthias, Jimi Tenor and Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald. This time around, though, instead of tackling a finished work of classical composition, Herbert has taken a slightly different tack; the UK experimentalist will recompose Mahler’s unfinished 10th Symphony. The work, which was nearly complete at the time of the composer’s death in 1911, is largely concerned with the theme of death.

Herbert has taken this idea to its logical extreme, building a car radio in a coffin, and letting one of the finished versions of the composition play on it to use for sampling purposes. The viola solo in the introduction, meanwhile, was reportedly made at Mahler’s grave. “My version will not only constitute the fascination of death, but an exaggeration of the awkward balance that Mahler produced between light and dark. It is the joy of conflict between the fear and the glory, ” says Herbert.

Deutsche Grammophon will release Recomposed by Matthew Herbert Mahler Symphony X on May 28, 2010.(RA)

Trentemoller -Into the Great Wide Yonder+Sycamore Feeling (Official Video)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on April 5, 2010 by dk

Danish producer Trentemoller has revealed more details about his forthcoming album, Into the Great Wide Yonder.

The full-length will be released on June 7th, and will come out via his own In My Room imprint. Composed of ten tracks, the record sees Trentemoller experimenting with “more organic and analog” textures, in contrast to the “crisp, digital sheen” that made him famous on his debut, The Last Resort. Reportedly including instruments like bass mandolin, theremin and a music box, Trentemoller nonetheless admits that computers were utilized at some point in the process. “I recorded most of the album in my computer, but in the final stages I transferred all the parts to analog tape through a lot of vintage EQ’s and pre-amps. The tape saturation and the analog outboard really helped getting the warm sound that I was after.” Solveig Sandnes, Josephine Philip and Guillemots singer Fyfe Dangerfield all feature. A single, “Sycamore Feeling,” will precede the album; for a teaser of the results, the official video is below.

01. The Mash and the Fury
02. Sycamore Feeling
03. Past the Beginning of the End
04. Shades of Marble
05. …Even Though You’re With Another Girl
06. Haxan
07. Metamorphis
08. Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider Go!!!
09. Neverglade
10. Tide

Trentemoller will release Into the Great Wide Yonder on In My Room on June 7, 2010.(RA)

Paul White – My Guitar Whales (Preview)

Paul White – My Guitar Whales (Extended Version)

Paul White- The Bright Future

Download Paul White – So Far Away (Tranqill’s Version)

My Guitar Whales is the first single from Paul White’s sophomore album, Paul White & The Purple Brain. A psychedelic stripped-down banger, it mixes an Eastern-influenced organ hook, rock hard drums, fuzzy synth bass and delirious chanting to mesmerising effect.

On the flip, The Bright Future twins a naggingly catchy piano refrain with tumbling drums and the quirky touches that give White’s music so much character.

A collaboration of sorts, Paul White & The Purple Brain is based around and inspired by the work of little-known Swedish psych-rock guru S.T. Mikael. Having been granted access to Mikael’s back catalogue, Paul White found a unique source of inspiration and challenged himself to create an album using the Swedish multi-instrumentalist’s work as the sole basis for his output. The result is an endlessly inventive showcase of what’s possible when armed with just a sampler, a few studio toys and a fertile imagination and marks a significant step forward from 2009’s cult hit ‘The Strange Dreams of Paul White’.
