Guru’s family -statement on death

Posted in News with tags on April 21, 2010 by dk

The family of Keith Elam aka Guru – have released an official statement following the iconic rapper’s death on Monday.

The former Gang Starr man, 43, died after losing his battle with cancer.

In the statement, the Elam family wrote: “Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. Guru was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.

“Guru suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year.  Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.  As a result, Guru was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness.”

“Early on the morning of April 19, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.”

“Guru died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.”

“The family is not aware of any foundations established by Guru.  We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive. Please look for further details from the family as they become available.”

There was no reference to the letter Guru supposedly wrote shortly before he died that relates to his former Gang Starr partner DJ Premier.

Mad Planet is a Los Angeles based duo made up of Greg Gordon former drummer for the Fugazi-style punk outfit the Nervous Return and Cooper Gillespie former front woman and bass player for the X-influenced rock band Bang Sugar Bang. Both formed Mad Planet in order to stretch in new directions different from their normal musical styles.

Their music is about love and life. The band’s sound is a modern and eclectic mix of hip hop beats, rock, jazz, and soundtrack music tied together by beautiful aching melodies. Full of rhythm and poetry, Mad Planet’s debut album All Elephants assimilates their primary sonic inspirations, Portishead, Massive Attack, and the Cure, while digging deep into a soulful exploration of loss and heartbreak.

According to Cooper, “this album is a journey from the darkness to the light. Its the contrast between sorrow and joy that gives life its fullness and beauty. You can only know where you want to go by evaluating where you’ve been. Without getting lost in the shadows, I wouldn’t know what a gift it is to live in the light again.”

Mad Planet is currently demo-ing songs for their sophomore album. They plan to release it early next spring. They are also looking forward to touring this summer.
