Review: Guido – Anidea(Punch Drunk)

It’s completely understandable why the Bristolian power trio of Joker, Gemmy and Guido would want to escape the term dubstep with all the wobbly ‘lads night out’ connotations it now attracts. However, on the evidence of Guido’s stunning ‘Anidea’ debut, their adopted alternative ‘purple wow’ isn’t really going to cut it either. This album is far too vivid and colouful to be shackled with a single shade or emotion, and it’s set a standard that his West Country bredren will do well to equal. Funkier than a pair of George Clinton’s week-old socks ‘Anidea’ is a breathtaking exercise in minimalism and mood that gets better with every play, barely dropping a step throughout the dozen tracks. While all of the quality dubstep signifiers are there in abundance, tracks like ‘Mad Sax’ and the sublime half-stepper ‘Take Me Higher’ have strong house elements, and there’s more than a whiff of sophisticated R&B in the vocal treatments throughout.
Personally having already thrashed the original instrumental to within an inch of its’ life I can’t help feeling a little ambivalent about Yolanda’s vocals plonked on top of ‘Way U Make Me Feel’, though it works superbly in the context of an album that has been programmed with precision and nous. Guido makes it sound ridiculously simple, yet anyone who has ever grappled with a minimal sound palate will know that just isn’t the case, and it’s impossible not to be floored by the unfathomably deep subs, crafty melodies and macroscopic sound design.
With powerful musical statements like the melancholy ‘Cat In The Window’ and the genuinely next level ‘Tango’ it’s hard to believe this won’t be a serious contender in the Best Of The Year lists, and justifiably so.

B2: OVERDRIVE (Welcome Stranger’s Cold Hard Light of Day Mix)

Parisian motor fetish electro poppers, Bot’Ox (AKA or Julien Briffaz and Benjamin Boguet, the half of Tekel and the whole of Cosmo Vitelli) puts it into gear and takes to the Autobahn with their latest single, ‘Overdrive’ out on I’m A Cliché Records this June. Jammed packed with up-tempo rhythms, mad synth lines and freaky melodies at every sharp turn, ‘Overdrive’ is the perfect long haul, road trip soundtrack as you put pedal to the metal on the highway to where ever.
A tried and tested formula, the reaction to the track at the end of the band’s new live set has proven to be most welcoming. The crowd loves it and so do Bot’Ox. Already a staple fixture in the buzzy Parisian scene, the duo’s debut album will be released in September and the boys look set to rev it up.
The 12” package comes with 4 choice remixes.
Morgan Geist, of Metro Area fame and Environ’s head honcho, adds a furious groove to the original while keeping the tension alive. French duo Logo, hotly tipped newcomers, take it straight to the dance floor and last but not least, Welcome Stranger (aka Thomas Bulllock from Rub n Tug) uses the handbrake to give us a deep, beat less and dubbed out version.

Watch out for more info on the debut Bot’Ox artist album due later this summer

Ahu(Flying Lotus collaborator) Fact Mixtape download

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 21, 2010 by dk

The young Turkish singer, full name Ahu Kelesoglu, has already built up quite a reputation for her collaborations with Flying Lotus, Mr Beatnick and others – it was she, under the name Dolly, who contributed the sublime, dusky vocal to Flying Lotus’s ‘Robertaflack’. Increasingly focussing on solo work inspired by house, techno, the golden age of jazz singers, European movie soundtracks and much else besides, we reckon Ahu’s really going to be one to watch in the months and years that lie ahead. We took the opportunity to ask her a few questions, and she reciprocated not only with some informative answers but with an exclusive mixtape for FACT as well. A wonderful audio tour of our girl’s formative influences and current interests alike, it includes music from Brigitte Bardot, Daedalus and Matthew Herbert, not to mention two unreleased tracks by Portishead’s Beth Gibbons. Listen, read(more) and enjoy…
