“Rainstick” off Cheap Thrills Vol. I

“Under The Sun” off Best Of

You’d be forgiven if it’s been hard to keep up with Joshua “Hervé” Harvey over the last few years. Performing under a number of pseudonyms — The Count, Speaker Junk, Young Lovers, to name just a few — Hervé has scored more hits under more names than practically anyone else coming out of the U.K. underground. With the release of Best Of and Cheap Thrills Volume 1 via DIM MAK, keeping up with Hervé will get a little easer. Compiling the U.K. producer’s most iconic tracks, Best Of serves as a primer of Hervé’s work since he started releasing bass club monsters as Speaker Junk back in 2006. Released in conjunction with Best Of, Cheap Thrills Volume 1 collects the best-of-the-best of Hervé’s label Cheap Thrills.

Living up to its name, Best Of is an impeccable collection of Hervé’s most iconic tracks. There’s the dark, tech-y beats of  “Hardcore Girls, which Hervé recorded with Sinden as The Count & Sinden. “Scratch Up the Music” features Hervé’s foray into hard house, and Hervé’s collaboration with Marina Gasolina, “Baseball Bat” sounds like something Sleigh Bells would’ve recorded if they’d been raised on Massive Attack.

Cheap Thrills Volume 1 compiles the best tracks that have come off Hervé’s budding U.K. label, Cheap Thrills. With hits like Fake Blood’s “Mars” and Hervé and Kissy Sell Out’s “Rikkalicious,” it’s easy to see why Cheap Thrills has been described as the U.K.’s answer to Ed Banger. His Majesty André and The Bloody Beetroots grab disco by the balls and unleash a massive club track entitled “Puppets.” Max Morrell brings a more traditional house sound into the mix with “Seeliko, while Midwest duo Glamour’s “Rubbin & Bumpin” serves as the unlikely meeting point between electro and dubstep.

Joshua ‘Hervé’ Harvey first hit the dance scene in 2007 with a string of 12” releases on Switch’s cutting edge Dubsided label. Following his Dubsided hits, Joshua set up Cheap Thrills Records as an outlet for his own releases and the best of the best from the U.K. underground. It was around this time that Hervé started breaking into the mainstream, remixing everyone from Bloc Party, Lily Allen and the Chemical Brothers to Sam Sparro, Marc Ronson, Calvin Harris and The Prodigy.

Africa HiTech Hitecherous EP

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on June 2, 2010 by dk

Production duo Africa HiTech will release their second EP on Warp Records this June.
A side project of revered producers Steve Spacek and Warp stalwart Mark Pritchard (of Harmonic 313, Jedi Knights and a myriad of other pseudonyms), the first Africa HiTech release was lauded as a superb blend of grime, dancehall, techno and glitchy electronica.

The follow up EP, titled Hitecherous, promises to push the duo’s sound into hitherto unexplored terrain, with three tracks that touch on dubstep, rave and Lovers Rock.

Hitecherous will be released on June 28 via Warp Records.

Boohgaloo Zoo -Boohgaloo Zoo 5th July (Lovemonk Records)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 2, 2010 by dk

Released 5th July 2010
Boohgaloo Zoo are K’bonus and U-Gene, two veterans of the Belgian and Dutch music scene respectively. After meeting at the ‘10 Days Off’ festival in Ghent the duo started exchanging music and soon enough a full album was in the making. With K’bonus adding beats and samples and U-Gene dropping the vocals and keys it was obvious they were a match made in P-funk heaven, as you can hear on their eponymous album released on 5th July 2010 on Lovemonk Records.

Lovemonk have created a monster sound with a touch of nu-disco, house, hip-hop and funk. Think Arthur Russell, Chromeo, Amp Fiddler and yes, George Clinton.

On this album K’bonus and U-Gene collaborate with a host of musicians such as Cleveland rapper and one of Gilles Peterson’s favourites Replife, who shows his skills on ‘Found It’, ‘Watch It’,No Joke’ and ‘Tonight’. They also hooked up with brothers Martín and Josué who are two thirds of Spanish funk ensemble Speak Low on ‘No Joke’ and ‘Dead Wood’. Belgian turntablist Grazzhoppa also makes an appearance on ‘No Joke’. All contributing artists make up Boohgaloo Zoo’s live set.

K’bonus comes from Antwerp where he has strutted his stuff on many a stage scattered all over the diamond city. As a drummer in the band Dedos he released a couple of 12”s on the Eighttrack label. As a DJ he’s played at every funk-boogie-breaks-soul-techno-hip-hop-house party held in Belgium including stints in Europe and the USA. This man has funk flowing through his veins.

U-Gene plays infectious music and has played with everyone from Kraak & Smaak, Liquid Spirits, Seven Eleven, Eboman and Urban Dance Squad to Rednose Distrikt, Kid Sublime and Aardvarck – either as a band member or as a guest vocalist/keyboard player.

The Lowdown
Fade Records returns with the third installment of the Audio Tour series and is proud to introduce New York City’s enigmatic One Of Them, who mans the decks here on Audio Tour Three. One Of Them takes his time to dig deep into the Fade crates and pull together a flawless mix that highlights the label’s recent selections of high quality house and techno. He crafts a spellbinding journey filled with mystery and intrigue that showcases the label’s rich diversity of sounds.

The new mix is also a testament to label founder and world famous DJ Chris Fortier’s impressive A&R skills. Rising stars such as Coalition of the Killing (COTK), Crazy Larry, Signal Deluxe, and Android Cartel have all called Fade home and some of those crucial early releases and remixes make an appearance here. It’s this amazing foresight that makes Audio Tour Three so compelling, but the real attractions are the five productions from One Of Them, a mix of techno stomp and classic sci-fi madness. Couple that with his surgical precision on the decks and it is certain that One Of Them will be one artist to watch in 2010.

Artist Bio
Who is One of Them? We might find out more from what he is not, He is not a spotlight seeker, fame whore or money grabber. Something seemingly uncommon today. There are no gimmicks, no image consultants, no agents, no managers or stylists.

The self-described “stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking Nerf-herder in New York City” has released three one-of-a-kind sounding EPs on Fade prior to Audio Tour Three and also works with artist Slow Hand as Male Madame.

No matter what, One Of Them’s focus is always on writing music tabula rasa – with nothing in mind. As he says, “no organic bullshit, no plan.”, just doing it in a Zenlike void of creativity. Although unusual in this current Facebook era and heavy social media onslaughts, this method seems to be working thus far.

(donwload)Teebs: XLR8R Podcast 140

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 2, 2010 by dk

Young Teebs is more than just another producer in Southern California’s über-fertile beat scene. The Chino Hills resident—who swears that he’s moving back to LA proper very soon—is not only busy putting the finishing touches on a debut album slated for release on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label later this year, he’s also an accomplished skater, artist, and painter. Basically, he’s one of those dudes who’s seemingly good at just about everything he does. Like many of his musical brethren, he claims to have been originally inspired by trips to vaunted weekly club night Low End Theory, although we’re guessing that the fact that he also has spent time living with FlyLo and Samiyam certainly hasn’t stifled his development as an artist. Now he’s fresh off the release of his collaborative Tropics EP with UK producer Jackhigh, and about to embark on a summer tour with like-minded young buck Shlohmo, so we were lucky to pin Teebs down long enough to put together a mix for the XLR8R podcast. Stuffed with hazy, blunted beats, the mix nicely captures the spirit of the LA sound and also happens to feature a grip of unreleased and exclusive tunes.
