The SubDivision -Open Your Eyes EP (PL012/Paradise Lost Recordings)+Free Download

The SubDivision return home to Paradise Lost with the Open Your Eyes EP: epic vibes, hypnotic bass work, and complex programming manifest themselves as what might be considered their best work to date, and surely a production which defines their unique style for building cinematic tracks of epic proportions. The structure is trademark TSD: a beautifully drawn-out breakdown compliments the progressively building tension, leading to a thunderous climax toward the end. This tune is more of a journey than simply a DJ tool (although it’s a treat to mix with), and DJs such as Bunzer0, Djunya, 501 and Claw have used it to devastating effect in the mix.

For variations on the Open Your Eyes theme, Finnish mercenary 501 was brought in and produces a devastating, sinister, half-stepping remix monster. This version utterly destroys the dancefloor in usual 501 fashion, but adds a twist of darkness. HLZ, whose work for Drum and Bass labels Chronic, Soul:R and Liquid V Recordings has brought him much acclaim, was recruited to offer up his own unique take on Dubstep for a second variation on the original. He uses signature bassline science combined with smacking, dancefloor-friendly drums, then tosses in an epic breakdown-buildup combination followed by a monumental drop that’s sure to get the dance jumping.

Variety truly is the spice of life, and Paradise Lost Recordings once again seeks to bring that point home with the Open Your Eyes EP.

The fearsome Buraka Som Sistema take over London’s XOYO for a special one-off DJ/MC set. The group are in town for a recording session to work on material for their new album, due out after the summer.

Buraka Som Sistema consists of producers Lil’ John, Riot and Conductor, with MC Kalaf but count amongst their ranks an extended family of dancers and MCs from around the globe. In just three years the group have released critically acclaimed debut album ‘The Black Diamond’, a slew of breakthrough singles, torched the blogosphere with their MIA featuring viral video ‘Sound Of Kuduro’, and wowed audiences all over the world with a mesmerizing dance-driven live show. No wonder Fader mag dubbed their live feast, “One of the most jaw-droppingly effusive club moments we’ve experienced.”

Buraka have invited two acts they have been supporting in Lisbon through their own Enchufada label out to support them at XOYO. Come check out the new generation as they play in London for the first time.

Diamond Bass is already making a name for himself with DJ sets fusing traditional African and Brazilian sounds with house music. His remix of J-Wow’s ‘Fogo’ got a lot of love from Clash Mag, XLR8R and Juno.

Paus are a horse of a different colour. A live act with a “Siamese drum kit” – two kits joined together with a shared bass drum, they make driving, heavy sounds with layered synths and compelling vocals. Fans of At the Drive In and Fugazi take note.

NYC label Trouble & Bass signing Zombies for Money round out the bill.

Catch this exclusive DJ/MC show and sets from special guests for the last time before they lock themselves in the studio again.

New EP, Muscle Milk, for FREE!

Click HERE to watch Hot Sugar make a beat using sounds constructed in his apartment

The refreshingly diverse collection of songs is the beat wizard’s debut release and touches on everything from futuristic funk to whimsical indie pop to glitchy IDM.  The man behind the moniker, Nick Koenig, has harnessed his endless ambition and a restless creativity to make music with a distinct style and a truly chameleonic sound.
Dame Dash’s Creative Control recently caught up with producer Nick Koenig, a.k.a. Hot Sugar, to document his unique process of making beats and capture his charmingly awkward sense of humor.  Click HERE to watch Koenig in action (and note that all the sounds used in this video were recorded live at this session.)
For the past several decades numerous musicians have created recordings using found audio.  It is usually done in a manner that highlights the unusual nature of the source. Koenig, on the other hand, manipulates his samples until they’re tweaked beyond recognition.  For example, if one of his kick drums sounds like it came from a drum set, it’s more likely to be the sound of a car running over a juicebox, if not a fire cracker pitched down and chopped up, etc.
Having mastered this experimental technique, Koenig has a nearly unlimited palette of sounds to work with and his beats cover a massive array of genres.  “F**kable” is a slice of oddball digital funk while “Don’t Cut Down My Tree” is a grimy banger, and “Color Wars” features the soulful, lo-fi croon of Aaron Livingston (The Roots, RJD2).  Muscle Milk is a mere appetizer for Hot Sugar’s forthcoming work.  With multiple other projects in the works, including a full-length slated for later this year, he is already living up to the promise of being one of the most exciting and innovative producers on the scene.

Adam Jay and Angel Alanis are names synonymous with quality dance music. In the last few years, Adam has blazed a trail through the techno world with numerous and frequent releases on tastemaker labels such as Monoid, Pulse, Thoughtless Music, Stereophonic, and Subsensory.

Preceded by solid releases on legendary labels such as Tresor, Impact Mechanics, Tronic, and Subspace, Angel Alanis needs no introduction as one of Chicago’s driving forces of choice techno and house.

VIP Parking is built on a solid foundation of classic techno sounds, with a distinct house influence. The deep driving kick anchors a funky groove of tight, digital percussion. Icy cold strings sweep over the track, and warm chords bring the house flavor into the production. Angel’s signature analog mix gives the track a saturated, dense texture. VIP Parking is 2011’s must-have dancefloor tool – combining an insistent groove with a sparse arrangement, and top-notch production.

The Remixes
Nude Photo Music label head Audioelectronic delivers another dub-influenced reinvention, taking the track deeper into the house territory.

Jon Gillham reinvents the track and himself with the Random Pattern Mix – a deep and driving slice of mainroom techno. Talented Portland producer Patrick Anthony Frye returns under his Centrikal guise and pushes the track further into the techno realm by rebuilding the rhythms, and deconstructing the house elements into something ominous and abstract. British DJ Andy Cessford – aka Loop Corporation, a newcomer to the label, debuts with an upbeat tracky techno workout with percolating bass and shuffling percussion. Jeremy Cohen, aka Dj Dumbstruck closes out the release with a stripped-down minimal mix that injects space into the mix, but keeps the energy up and showcases his own talent for understated micro-grooves.
