dirtybird delivers Friend Within ‘The Game’ EP(preview)

FriendWithin_TheGame_Breaking through the ranks of upcoming UK house producers is no easy feat, but with the debut release ‘The Game EP’ from new artist Friend Within out on dirtybird on 6th February, this is one name you will be seeing a lot more of very soon. ‘The Game’ kicks off with a stuttering heavyweight house cut on the title track; a shuffling groove-laden instrumental that is built for peak-time main rooms. But it’s ‘The Hollow’ with a clear penchant for 90s-leaning house echoed by some truly crisp and crunchy basslines that cements Friend Within as a monster producer and close friend of the dirtybird camp. And let’s face it, there’s not many better friends to have in the music game right now!

But who is Friend Within? It’s clear they have inimitable knowledge behind the decks, are well-versed in the classics and bring a positively fresh spin to experienced production, but their roots are impossible to determine. Personally, we can’t help but picture Friend Within as a new alias from someone you should already know… With early support from the likes of Skream and Heidi, forthcoming releases on the likes of Hypercolour and Pets Recordings in early 2013, plus huge love for forthcoming remix ‘Renegade Master’ that has everyone from Disclosure to Monki and B.Traits in a spin, expect to be seeing and hearing a lot more from Friend Within over the next few months. And in the meantime, get your best Cluedo game faces on; you’re gonna need ‘em.

ClekClekBoom presents Paris Club Music Volume I

ClekClekBoom presents Paris Club Music Volume I

Paris is back and it’s no longer pumping to the filtered sound of disco house. Instead, a ‘90s generation have come of age born into the monochromatic shadow of Mathieu Kassovitz’s classic film, La Haine. A world of internal tensions cracking the ground for new shoots to appear from a vibrant street culture that’s en Seine in the membrane, raised as much on global bass and hip-hop’s freakiest mutations as the distant orbit of Chicago and Detroit.

You can hear it in the music of ClekClekBoom, the Paris-based label which began in 2007 as a website releasing baile funk from Rio’s favelas but now serves up its own home-grown ghetto grooves. Built around a core of twenty-something DJs and producers, spearheaded by French Fries (who runs the label alongside Ministre X and The Boo), their youthful energy has forged boundary breaking ambitions. And as ClekClekBoom Recordings reaches its first birthday at the start of 2013, its dedication to quality and longevity is evident in a commitment to vinyl, alongside digital, releases, a box fresh aesthetic courtesy of artistic director The Boo, their fortnightly Boomcast show, attracting like-minded guests from Lunice to Bok Bok, and now this compilation – split between exclusive new tracks (CD1) and a summary of the label’s first eight releases (CD2).

Harry Wolfman – Booty Call (LMD067) inc. Ben Pearce & Pete Dafeet remixes(Preview)

Harry Wolfman - Booty Call (LMD067) inc. Ben Pearce & Pete Dafeet remixesAnother rising star of the UK house scene, Harry Wolfman from the head-turning Purp & Soul crew, joins the Lost My Dog ranks with his latest EP of trippy and twisted deep house. Harry’s three original tracks are all built around hypnotic deep grooves, complemented by thickly layered synths and pads, and sparse vocal stabs. The result is a captivating listen.

Title track ‘Booty Call’ is backed by two remixes – the first by Ben Pearce, still riding high on the success of his Beatport chart-topping single ‘What I Might Do’ last year. Ben takes things even deeper than the original with huge swirling build-ups and a relentless nagging bassline. The second remix comes from Lost My Dog boss Pete Dafeet who is currently in a hot streak of form following an album and 2 EPs for LMD in 2012, and has countless remix and worldwide gig requests rolling in. Pete’s remix retains the eerie feel of the original, but increases the energy in the drums and brings extra grit to the synth work.

Ave Astra - Don't Try Again

After making a huge hit on Beatport with his mesmerizing track “Do I Hate Or Love”, our favorite Istanbul producer Ave Astra is back with a new single on Filigran.
It is just one track: But what a track it is. It is one of these tracks that come along every couple of months, where you know immediately, that it will be a bomb for the dancefloors around the globe. Breathtakingly beautiful production.
