Dovercourt EP
Over the last year I’ve traveled to Canada frequently for gigs and got to know the small but healthy electronic music scene there. Cities like Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto have brought forth many established artists over the past few years, such as Egyptrixx, Azari & III, Basic Soul Unit, Jacques Greene, Lunice and Sixtoo, but 2012 has seen a new breed of no-nonsense house and techno producers come up via labels like Turbo Recordings and Naked Lunch.
This “Dovercourt EP” features four very talented producers: Kevin McPhee, Nautiluss, Gingy and fresh face Bruce Trail. Their tracks are a dedication to their hometown of Toronto. Being removed from the house/techno epicentres of Berlin and London, these four are much less interested in what’s fashionable or trendy, and more in bringing us straight to the point, no frails jacking house music. I’ve been playing these four extensively in my DJ sets, and I hope you will too. So out to Toronto, this one’s for you! Enjoy.

Morcheeba’s SKYE Announces Tour Dates + MP3 “Featherlight”

Announces Tour Dates

Shares “Featherlight” Radio Edit HERE

Shortly after releasing her third studio album, Back To Now on [PIAS] AmericaSKYE will take her intoxicating live performance on the road this February with her four date mini tour, stopping in New York & Los Angeles.  Today, the Morcheeba frontwoman is also sharing the radio edit of the lead single “Featherlight,” off her latest album, flush with electro hooks & poppy splendor.

Back To Now sees Skye on assured form in the follow up to 2009’s Keeping Secrets. The album began life in similar fashion to her two previous releases, in partnership with her longtime collaborator and husband Steve Gordon. However, in contrast to Keeping Secrets and Skye’s solo debut Mind How You Go, guitar and piano were laid to one side and tracks instead evolved from the early barebones of beats and loops. Aware of the potential of the raw material she had written, Skye specifically sought out the production services of Grammy Award winner Stephen Fitzmaurice (PalomaFaith,Metronomy and Professor Green); ‘I’d worked with Stephen before when he mixed (previous single) ‘Love Show’ and knew he’d be able to take these new songs to the next level’.

Fitzmaurice’s crisp production values couple with Skye’s ethereal voice to impressive effect, across a distinctly nocturnal soundscape. Synths bubble across early album highlights ‘Sign of Life’ and ‘Featherlight’, both anchored by Skye’s effortless vocals, whilst ‘Every Little Lie’s’ chorus mines a compulsive vocal hook to memorable effect.
However, Back To Now is by no means an exclusively synth propelled album, with strings employed to distinctive effect on ‘Bright Light’ and the possessive plea of ‘Nowhere’. Yet in all cases, it is the character and range of Skye’s vocals which underpins Back To Now. Layered on ‘High Life’, providing a tender counterpoint to the disquieting synths of ‘Dissolve’, and gliding across the percussive loops of ‘Little Bit Lost’, it is an ever arresting focus point.

Flexout Audio – Neve (Feat. Zubee) – ‘All Spark'(Preview)

Neve (Feat Zubee) - 'All Spark'Flexout Audio presents the first release from what is set to be a massive year for newcomer Neve.

Rolling in hard and fast from the outset with ‘All Spark’ featuring nasty vocals from Zubee, there’s no mistaking that Neve is set to take the DnB bull by the horns. Light on it’s feet but with a seriously heavy payoff, it’s a track that keeps on giving to the dancefloor, a perfect set builder.

On the flip we see Neve producing something altogether filthier, with ‘Flip The Switches’ which also features vocals from Zubee. Sparse, scattered breaks litter a sonic landscape built around lunging, leering bass and shards of tight percussion.

It’s a brave and ultimately inventive first release from an ambitious producer right at the beginning of his career. You heard him here first.

ASC – Proton / Electron (Preview) 28th Jan 2013 on Pushing Red

red011_webASC graces us with his second offering on Pushing Red and one of the strongest releases yet. A fantastic follow up to his debut on the label and one that shows his versatility and strength for techno. “Proton” starts off with chest thumping kicks and a clever undulating bassline as in true ASC fashion. Blips & bleeps weave in and out of the background before the snare drops in to take the track onwards. Will do damage on any dancefloor. “Electron” is another deep techno piece. A solid 4/4 keeps the momentum strong with pulsating bass and smooth melodies. Body and mind music
