Rawtekk – Sprouted & Formed

Posted in News with tags , , , , on June 17, 2013 by J.D.

MEDIC34-Packshot-2400px“Sprouted and Formed” is the inaugural album from enthralling electronic duo Rawtekk. Hailing from Hamburg in Germany, Rawtekk initially caught the attention of Med School with the sublime “Snowflakes” which features on the 2011 edition of the label’s popular “New Blood” compilation series.

Rawtekk will also be a familiar name to discerning fans of techy/neuro drum & bass, having released on labels such as Subtitles and Noisia’s Division Recordings. Past collaborations include tracks with fellow Hamburg resident and close friend Phace (Neosignal).

Fast forward to 2013 and Stefan and Christine return to Med School with their first ever full-length long-player which effortlessly combines precision engineering with elegant song-writing sensibilities.

*Opener “A Magnanimous Kind’s Will” is a beautiful, dreamy utterance with a distinctive take on dubstep, whilst elsewhere we have eerie, melancholy tracks such as “Anywhere” juxtaposed with introspective drum & bass cuts like “Photone Recruits” and the spaced-out beatless melodies of “Ventricle”.

Keeping us on our toes, Rawtekk really up the ante with tough, gnarly drum & bass numbers “To Be A Space Monkey” and “Monopolists And Robberies” which dominate the second half of the album with their impressive force.

“Sprouted and Formed” is a captivating story told through a range of soundscapes and emotions… profound and haunting, surreal and cinematic, brutish yet sensitive, bringing together complexity and simplicity.

dj marky _159bCelebrating his 40th birthday and 23 years as a DJ, Brazilian dance music pioneer Marky has put together a special mix to mark the occasion. The 75min mix works its way through an enormous 78 tracks, drawing together a selection of music that he has been playing since he first started out and moving through sounds and styles with aplomb. Journeying from classic funk and soul through hip hop, house and on to jungle and drum and bass, the mix once again asserts Marky’s inimitable talents behind a pair of decks as well as the influences that underlie his music.
The new mix follows the huge success of Marky’s first Marky & Friends festival in Brazil at the start of the month, for which he invited Mix Master Mike, Moodymann and LTJ Bukem along to play alongside himself. Having also recently released the ‘Sounds of the Innerground’ compilation on his Innerground imprint, two tracks from the producer feature on the new ‘Future Classics’ EP alongside long-time collaborator Makoto.

Arkitekt 02: Luca Bacchetti (Arkitekt Recordings) 15th July

Posted in News with tags , , , , on June 17, 2013 by J.D.

Arkitekt 02 Luca BacchettiThe second Arkitekt compilation comes from Italian DJ and producer Luca Bacchetti. Focusing on the more forward thinking strains of house and techno, the Arkitekt mandate gleefully plunders the underground elements of modern dance music culture.

Currently residing in Barcelona, HQ of his own label Endless, the DJ / producer made swift business of spreading his signature twists and musical turns through myriad productions and remixes released on labels such as Ovum Recordings, Crosstown Rebels, Wagon Repair, Culprit, Saved, Be As One, Defected, Hideout, Sci+Tec and Supernature. Additionally, he’s accrued a host of accolades including a nod from Beatport as best artist in 2008 that confirmed Luca’s status as an industry leader. As a DJ, Bacchetti’s style is incomparable, showcasing his unique ear for selection and a rare ‘voice’ to which he adds a sexiness uncommon amongst his peers. Equally versed at moving a dark basement club to fits of revelry as he is to casting a deep shadow across a sunny beach party, the breadth and depth of sources from which Luca culls his sets astounds constantly. It is this duality of emotion that interests the DJ and inspires his work on his many releases.

This ethos is clearly reflected in his Arkitekt mix alongside informed recognition of key artists, imprints and sounds. Tracks from Isolée, Culoe De Song, Tale Of Us, Mathew Jonson, Luciano, sit with remixes from Ewan Pearson, Carl Craig, Four Tet, alongside releases on labels Ghostly International, Ninja Tune, Innervisions, Crosstown Rebels and Endless. In the wrong hands it could go dangerously off track, but Luca’s skill in selecting and weaving records together not only guides the overall mix but emphasises each individual track’s qualities. Luca features three of his own productions over the two mixes, with ‘California’ – exclusive to Arkitekt – closing off the album.

The chance to mix a double CD for Arkitekt has given me the opportunity to capture a photo of this moment in my life through two distinct paths, with as many facets and colours as possible, without being conditioned by a specific stylistic constraint. The right context for a classic DJ Set is the Club; but this CD has a different concept because although inspired by the club scene, you will be listening to it in other settings. Therefore its construction is based on different criteria: those of colours. Whereas the first disk begins with deep tones which transform into a rich palette of bright colours, the second disk is more introspective with even deeper tones. It’s as if from within the colour spectrum I start from green as the centre, to then set off and explore the opposites.” Luca Bacchetti – June 2013
