Temple Music Group in-house producer Ben Tom blew up last year with the release of his dance floor anthem “It’s A Party” featuring Mr. V. “Corner Store Pimp”, his latest release, shows off a different side, one that is deeper, richer, and more cutting edge. “40 Ounces” is a perfect example of the new forms emerging from the San Francisco house scene in 2010. The warm, dubby bass lines are still the same flavor you’d expect from a Temple Music Group release but the melodies are complex and bursting with the kind of energy missing in most of today’s deep house tracks.

Continuing in our relentless pursuit of new sounds, the Corner Store Pimp E.P. features an equally forward thinking b-side remix from Jaswho? He delicately balances the line between slammin’ bass line funk and the indelible sweetness of precision sculpted after hours house for something entirely new.

On the flipside, Tom tacks on the smokers’ delight cut “Swisher Sweets” to emphasize that deep down inside, the corner store pimp just likes to party and get down with dope beats and blunts. Based on a solid SF house foundation, the track pays homage to America’s favorite herb in many clever ways with Tom layering in some tasty G-funk’d Juno synth lines for a nice sprinkling of “Cali love” on top.

Artist Information:Ben Tom
Raised in San Francisco’s Chinatown district, Ben Tom approaches music much as he does life, with a humble determination to walk his own path and loyalty to those who matter most. Behind the decks, Ben moves seamlessly from soulful house to electro techno, weaving pop and hip-hop vocals over dance-inducing tracks that keep the crowd on the floor while fluidly crossing genres and flirting with unexpected sound combinations. On stage, his expert focus and ability to select just what the audience needs just when they need it are hallmarks of his performances.

In the studio, Tom lets his instincts take over and trusts sound to be the guide. Whether he’s crafting vocal-driven tracks like the forthcoming Mixed Up, which features Temple Music Group’s Isabel Lozano, working his magic on upcoming collaborations with the likes of New York’s hip-hop DJ Mr. V or stirring up radio-ready remixes with co-conspirator JasWho? (a.k.a. Jason Williams) under the moniker Black Wangz, Ben uses his keen sound sensibilities and appreciation for music across genres to deliver releases with wide-reaching appeal.

Remix Artists:
JasWho? aka Jay Williams
Resident artist at Temple SF, San Francisco’s largest nightclub. He is one of the founders of Soulmine Records, a Bay Area indie house label established in 1999. JasWho?’s music has been licensed for ringtones, TV shows, and feature films. You can find him recording at Moulton Studios as one of the members of 40 Thieves, touring with the bands Spigga and Playground People, and producing artists at Temple Studios SF, and Soulmine Studios, Oakland, CA.

House Of House – Rushing To Paradise (DJ Harvey Streets Mix)

Posted in Deep House, Nu Disco, Reviews on February 27, 2010 by E.N.

There’s a bit of a cliché about remixing perfect tracks. Why bother, the thought goes, when you’ve already got something that doesn’t need “fixing”? “Rushing to Paradise” isn’t a perfect track (although it’s pretty close to a perfect song in my mind), as evidenced by the wide variety of edits floating around, and the wide variety of tempos I’ve heard it played at. But DJ Harvey’s remix of the epic tune hardly does the thing justice. The edit maestro splices and dices “Rushing,” making it more suitable for the floor, but loses the bits around it that made the original so special.

That’s his job of course, but you get the sense that this is a bit of a missed opportunity. Like taking out “In the beginning there was jack” from “My House.” (Well, not that bad, but you get the point.) With such rich source material, it feels as though there would have been endless possibilities for Harvey to ponder. And, in the end, we simply get something this straight ahead? Bummer, dude.

Then again, if you haven’t got the original—and considering how much the original pressing sometimes goes for elsewhere, we don’t blame you—we can’t recommend this one enough.(RA)

Philpot’s Soulphiction digs further into his deep house crease to pull out a heavy collection of pulse-slowed dancing gear for Sonar Kollektiv. The emphasis is split between psyched, slow-burning and Africanised house music through to jazzier club goodies, from the 110bpm throbo-jack of the NWAQ-alike ‘State Of Euphoria’ and the infectious ‘Prison Song’ to the Afrobeat slink of ‘Make It Slow’. For the jazzy crew make sure to check his remix of Eva B’s ‘No Memory Of Time’ and ‘Whizzdom & Understanding’ or the burning strings of ‘Soul Print’.(boomkat, listen, buy here)

SCHWARZ / AME / DIXON – A Critical Mass Live EP

Posted in Deep House, Electronic, Minimal House on February 11, 2010 by E.N.

As a result of the “A Critical Mass” tour in 2009, Innervisions are now releasing two new tracks recreated from the recorded live material, they gathered. The A-side is based on Henrik Schwarz’s sought after “Chicago” track, but transformed into an eerie, bleepy techno track with a touch of early M-Plant productions. The version on the 12” was recorded in Helsinki during the Flow Festival in August 2009. The flip is called “Berlin-Karlsruhe Express” and was a highlight in every live show. A Drexciyan type, house inferno that showcases the powerhouse that was the Henrik Schwarz, Âme & Dixon collaboration perfectly.(Phonica, listen, buy here or at boomkat)

Martinez – Cheesecake

Posted in Deep House, Electronic, Tech House on February 11, 2010 by E.N.

After his collaboration with matthias tanzmann in summer 2009, martinez releases another stunning solo ep on moon harbour. within a few beats it’s clear who we have here – so distinctive has martinez’ sound become. »cheesecake« has an elegant house flow, its pressure evolving throughout and held by the continually increasing chord which, when reduced to its essential elements, creates a unique tension in the track. this elegant groover will turn heads as its deepness grows to catch the listener at just the right time. on the flipside »gourmet« is full and atmospheric – a floating chord, an excited vocal and from time to time a string make this the track to start the night or the morning in a euphoric way.(nuloop, buy here)

Greena- XLR8R Podcast 119

Posted in Deep House, Dub Step, Electronic, Hip Hop, Nu Rave, Podcast, Techno, XLR8R Podcast on January 21, 2010 by E.N.

Yes, we know. In recent months XLR8R has been on London overdrive. Normally, we try to avoid endlessly stoking the hype machine, but these Brits are just making it so damn hard. It seems like every week a new producer magically pops up out of the London underground and breaks our brains with a mind-melting new spin on UK garage, funky, 2-step, house, and whatever other urban sounds are bubbling over there. This week, you can go ahead an add Greena to the list of artists to obsess over. On this exclusive mix, the 23-year-old Londoner and Night Slugs cohort whips together the usual assortment of dubplates and unreleased tunes from scene heavyweights like Untold, Brackles, Bok Bok, and Roska, but he also stretches his musical boundaries further than many of his contemporaries will dare, slotting in vintage techno, ghettotech, upfront house, and even some grime-flavored R&B. It may sound a bit schizophrenic, but Greena weaves his way between genres with ease, resulting in one particularly potent XLR8R podcast.
