Roof Light – In Your Hands EP (STRX 14)

Posted in Dub Step, Dub Techno, Electronic on September 15, 2009 by E.N.

Some sublime athmospheric techno tracks that go somewhere between dubstep, detroit techno and broken beat/ Garage. Roof Light did an excellent job on this 4 track ep with tracks that are light but full of emotion and athmosphere. Radiance is for sure one of the high lights with its minimal funky bass line and cut up beats and massive strings layered on top. Around here is the main track with its 90’s two step rhythm and its deep athmospheric sounds and vocals. LTJ Bukem goes Dubstep? not sure who is the producer… but if its a debut its pretty impressive. Great release!! Must have for all the Martyn and 2562 fans!(mbeat, buy here)

Summer Breeze

Posted in Deep Tech, Dub Techno, Electro, Electronic, Minimal Techno, Tech House, Techno, Various on July 28, 2009 by E.N.

Our favourite Dutch imprint rounds up their associates for a super smart soundtrack to your summer. Most of the tracks here are taken from the release schedule of the last 18 months or so, including dope cuts from Syncom Data, Louis Guilliaume, Ovatow, Shitcluster, Duracel, Nukubus Mark Du Mosch and more. Our picks have to be SD’s own day-tripping dub mix of ‘Beyond The Stars’ or ‘SDI’ from the now classic ‘SDo1 EP’, besides Louis Guilliaume’s graceful Detroit groover ‘Time Relapse’ from the ‘Soulpoint’ sessions, Shitcluster’s mind-fook joint ‘Doop 3′, or Aux 88′s Kraftwerkian mix of Nukubus’ ‘Europa’. Oh, and did we forget to mention one of our favourite tracks of the last decade, Obi’s Heavyweight Dub of SD’s ‘Horse’? To much to go on, get stuck in. TIP!(boomkat, buy here)

MUTEK_10 with Michel Pontbriand-XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Dub Techno, Electronic, XLR8R Podcast on May 26, 2009 by E.N.

In earlier days, a MUTEK showcase commonly involved a room of pasty guys standing still while endless bleeps and blips filled the air. And while we’d never contest the importance of that particular breed of electronic music (which remains the foundation of most MUTEK events), the festival has seen a considerable amount of growth and variety over the last decade, perhaps most evident in the lineup for this year’s annual Montreal festival.

So we figured we’d celebrate the fact that Appleblim can play alongside Moderat and Ghislain Poirier will share a stage with Nortec Collective with a special MUTEK mix. Montreal-based DJ, producer, and classically trained musician Michel Pontbriand stepped up to assume the task of curating a podcast in support of the upcoming MUTEK 10th Anniversary event, set to kick off next week on May 27. The Musique Risquée signee and longtime friend of the MUTEK crew took a long, hard look at this year’s roster, and his mix accordingly reflects its diversity, traversing house, techno, dubstep, downtempo, and more, all in just over an hour.

Luke Hess – Light In The Dark (echocord cd05)

Posted in Deep Tech, Dub Techno, Electronic on May 5, 2009 by E.N.

Dub techno fans take note: Detroit producer Luke Hess will release his debut full-length on Echocord later this year.

Hess began his career on Berettamusic and Omar-S’s FXHE, but the producer spent a number of years before that behind the decks, cultivating a sound rooted in his love of detailed dub techno. (His latest release for Modelisme is aptly called “Dub for Love.”) That obsession continues over the course of the nine tracks that make up Light in the Dark, his effort for Danish label Echocord. It will be his first solo outing on the label and is set to come out in May.

Tracklist
01. Meaning Matters
02. Son Beams
03. Evidence Everywhere
04. Transform
05. Self-Control
06. Reflections
07. The Truth Is
08. Reel Life
09. The Way

Echocord will release Luke Hess’ Light in the Dark in May 2009.
(RA)
One of the frontmost exponents of the nu-Dub Techno wave of producers, Luke Hess has built up a solid catalogue for the likes of Omar-S’s FXHE, Kontra-Musik and Echocord, who deliver this debut album. Alongside likeminded dub aesthetes like Marko Furstenburg, Quantec or Sven Weisemann, Luke has taken the template of mid-late 90′s Berlin Techno and merged it with his native Detroit sound for a purely refined and eternally groovesome sound benefitting from well tailored software enhancements that just weren’t available the first time round, allowing him to manipulate the sound to a further extent than his predecessors. Tracks like ‘Son Beams’ continue in the interstellar tradition of labels like Red Planet with cosmic synthlines given the dub treatment for an engrossing dancefloor experience while efforts like ‘Transform’ at least match the Berlin school at its own game. All deepchord heads need to pay real close attention to ‘Reel Life’ tucked away at the end of the album, a real deep winner of a cut sent swimming through tangibly effervescent analog atmospheres in the finest style. Excellent.(boomkat, buy here)
