Paul White & The Purple Brain +Free Download “Ancient Treasure”

Posted in Beats, Electronic, Experimental, Glitch, Hip Hop with tags , , , , , on March 24, 2010 by E.N.

An inventive showcase of what’s possible when armed with just a sampler, a few studio toys and a fertile imagination, Paul White & The Purple Brain is the intriguing sophomore album from South London producer Paul White – his first for Now-Again. This album will see release in early June.

A collaboration of sorts, the entire record is based around and inspired by the work of little-known Swedish psych-rock guru S.T. Mikael. Heavy on Eastern influences and otherworldly concerns, Mikael’s music ranges from searing electric guitar-led dirges to dreamlike ballads to ghostly atmospheric experiments and has been issued in tiny quantities since the 1990s on the Subliminal Sounds label.

Paul White & The Purple Brain is a remarkably diverse album that defies easy categorization. Which suits him and his “home” label One-Handed Music (in collaboration with whom Now-Again releases this album) just fine. Praised as someone who “embodies all that is good about a new generation of producers” (Dazed & Confused), Paul White has won over fans of left-leaning sounds and interesting hip-hop, including Diplo, Mary Anne Hobbs, Benji B and Gilles Peterson.

Download Dimlite – Beüjart/Nosaj Thing -IOIO

Posted in Beats, Downtempo, Electronic, Glitch, Hip Hop on March 8, 2010 by E.N.

“Wonky,” “glitch,” “blip-hop,” “the beat scene;” or – to put it a little more simply – a chorus of bleeps and blurps over disjointed breaks and sampled drums, resounding from smoky bedrooms and teenage myspace pages the world over. When it comes to this particular strain of seemingly new music, much has already been said and written, but very little has actually managed to decipher or to understand it. Dimlite is an artist whose work on the Sonar Kollektiv label allegedly laid the foundations for the current movement, spearheaded by people like Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke and Zomby; but it’s only recently that his connection to it has been revitalized and reclaimed.

Red Bull Music Academy presents Brainfeeder London at fabric on the 10th of March, here are two free tracks to get you in the mood.

Kuedo RA.196

Posted in Bass, Dub Step, Electronic, Funky, Glitch, Podcast, RA on March 1, 2010 by E.N.

Jamie Vex’d dons his Kuedo moniker for a delightfully wonky mix of bass music.

Even if you only have a passing interest in the more sub-heavy end of dance music, chances are you’ll have heard of Vex’d. Jamie Teasdale and Roly Porter’s fusion of dubstep with industrial and UK rave music on 2005′s Degenerate album paved the way for countless international and festival appearances. Tiring of the hectic schedule and life in London, the pair decided to move from the city in early ’07, with Roly heading west to Bristol and Jamie jetting to Berlin. Unfortunately, this meant that producing collaborative Vex’d material for their planned second album was a slow and difficult process, and they consequently decided to each focus on their own solo material. Jamie has been the more prolific of the two thus far, again aligning himself with Mike Paradinas’ Planet Mu imprint for 12-inches both as Jamie Vex’d, and more recently under his new Kuedo moniker.

The recent material has seen Teasdale move away from the dark and industrial dubstep sound of Vex’d, instead taking inspiration from the new wave of off-kilter beatsmiths that have emerged in the post-Dilla era. His fantastically wonky take on Scuba’s “The Upside” was the first track to hint at his stylistic change, but the two solo EPs that followed have cemented his reputation as both a formidable and versatile producer, featuring nods to blissful electronic jazz, kaleidoscopic dubstep and even ambient music.(RA)

Take, born and bred in LA, has recorded for Poobah, Eat Concrete, Plug Research and is about to drop his full length on Alpha Pup this year.. With his three tracks, TAKE continues to push the boundaries of left filed experimental Beat music into new directions. The influence of vintage electronic records, 1980’s soul, and hard crunchy beats is apparent as they all get crushed and melted down into fine gold…

Download: FACT mix 118 – Bullion

Posted in Beats, Downtempo, Eclectic, Fact, Glitch, Hip Hop, Podcast on January 25, 2010 by E.N.

This morning’s FACT mix takes the form of an exclusive session by Bullion.

Part of Alex Chase’s One Handed Music stable along with Paul White, Nathan ‘Bullion’ Jenkins is an Acton based hip-hop obsessive who first came to many’s attention with Pet Sounds: in the Key of Dee, a remix project that paired pop monoliths The Beach Boys with late Detroit hip-hop legend J Dilla.

A series of singles for One Handed followed, including a poignant collection of delay-soaked love songs on last year’s Young Heartache EP, and well, here we are.

Bullion has a new single out this month, ‘Say Goodbye to What’; his FACT mix should be the ideal soundtrack to you buying it online, or just illegally downloading it or whatever you kids do these days. David Crosby, Fleetwood Mac, Cabaret Voltaire and more feature.
