Motor City Drum Ensemble -XLR8R Podcast 119

Posted in Minimal House, Tech House, XLR8R Podcast on January 18, 2010 by dk

As his Motor City Drum Ensemble moniker implies, Stuttgart’s Danilo Plessow is a fan of classic Detroit techno, but, as this exclusive mix shows, the man also has an affinity for old-school Chicago house, not to mention vintage soul and disco. Through his Raw Cuts series and releases on the Four Roses label, Plessow has developed a hypnotic deep house sound that simultaneously reveres the past while remaining clearly focused on the future. After grooving to his productions for a couple years, here in the present we’re absolutely thrilled to add him to the XLR8R podcast stable.

Reggie Dokes is an undisputed Detroit house heavyweight. In recent years he’s notched up a string of deeply involving releases for everyone from Prime Numbers and Philpot to his own Psychostasia Recordings. On this release he starts the new Clone Loft Supreme Series with two hustlin’ house cuts; ‘Chicago Pimp’ strutting it with tough drum patterns and hypnotic keys hinting at something a little more sinister, and the Afro-syncopations of ‘I Wear The Mask’ sounding uncannily alike Mujava or many of the UK Funky fellas but still unmistakably from Detroit. LOSOUL & RAYSOO – Metroworks EP

Posted in Deep House, Minimal House, Tech House on December 23, 2009 by dk

German house veteran LoSoul refreshes his game by linking up with Malay producer Raysoo on two tracks of intimate minimalism backed with remixes from DJ Sonny and Pawas. We find lead cut ‘Metroworks’ poised at a point between hypnotic techno minimalism and slow house classicism while the more abstract ‘Following A Melody’ features a more exotically psychedelic sense of swing and groove development. DJ Sonny’s mix perks up the slow grind of the original with rolling subs and Pawas fills embellishes the tripping ‘Following A Melody’ with insistent kicks and kosmiche synth swirls for a magical dancefloor experience(boomkat, listen, buy here)

Jens Kuhn’s approach to music can be described as agreeably Miesian: less is nearly always more. His discography stretches back over 13 years, yet his output is pleasingly sporadic. His choice of labels throughout those years – David Moufgang’s Source Recordings, Playhouse, Out To Lunch – reflects his recorded output too: he’s studied the classics, but filters them through his left-of-centre lens.

He began the Workshop label in late 2006. Like-minded artists like Even Tuell, Kassem Mosse and Move D found a home there, and it quickly became a go-to destination for anyone looking for something a bit different. The label’s minimal aesthetic – hand-stamped logos on white labels – has been done before, but it certainly pre-empted the recent vogue for faux-anonymity.

Workshop has just released a project from Reagenz (Jonah Sharp and David Moufgang), reviving some tracks the pair recorded in Sharp’s San Francisco base in 1994, and pairing them with new works. ‘Playtime’ is available as a separate 12″s or compiled on one CD (or, if you really want, a special vinyl plus CD package from select record stores).

Kuhn himself has been busy – but not too busy, of course. His recent Polyfon release, ‘Angstrom’, is a late contender for your ‘records of the year’ list, while 2010 brings two new remixes: Antonelli Electr. on Dusseldorf’s Level Records and Gadi Mizrahi on Spectral.
