Millie & Andrea :: COLONY 009 (Feb 2010) – live show, Dec 2009, Colony club night, London

Posted in Uncategorized on March 7, 2010 by dk

Millie & Andrea :: COLONY 009 (Feb 2010)
live show, Dec 2009, Colony club night, London

COLONY is a small, friendly east London clubnight, put together to showcase the finest sounds in underground dance music, regardless of genre, popularity or hype.

The 9th installment in our ongoing voyage into dance music’s deepest nether regions sees Modern Love cross-dressers Millie & Andrea deliver a bass-heavy slice of everything good about British club music (no, not donk). Taken from their criminally large debut live show of December last year, COLONY_009 is a heady of concoction of dubstep, techno, hardcore, jungle and acid, packed to the brim with slurring hats, wafting subs and hauntilicious synths, and lubed with just enough Detroit goodness to keep the demons at bay. Crank it at your own risk…

Greg Wilson – Random Influences part 1

Posted in Uncategorized on February 24, 2010 by dk

Launched on his 50th birthday, the legendary Greg Wilson compiles a celebratory selection of 7” singles from his formative years. Covering the 60’s through to the mid-70’s, when he started out as a fresh-faced 15 year old club DJ, these records embody the soundtrack of his youth.

With running times of approximately 2 hours, the 12 individual monthly parts will conclude in a full day’s worth of music. Having only pre-determined the opening and closing tracks, Greg will select the rest as he goes along, moving in whatever directions his mood takes him at that moment, in a similar way to how it might be if he was sitting at home playing records to friends. The title, ‘Random Influences’, reflects this arbitrary approach.

Elite Force 10-min Mix for ‘The Remix’ (XFM)

Posted in Uncategorized on February 24, 2010 by dk

Something very different for you here and a project I had a lot of fun (and head-scratching) in putting together for The Remix, Eddy Temple-Morris’s excellent long-running show ‘The Remix’ on XFM.

The brief was simple – to create a 10-minute mix featuring a minimum of 10 of your ALL-TIME favourite songs (from any genre). Once I started to get my head around it I was gutted by how many tracks I wanted to include but failed to find the time or space … as it was I managed to fit 30 of my all-time favourite tracks in there. Download link is at the foot of the tracklist …

01 philip glass – cloudscape
02 joy division – the eternal
03 primal scream – higher than the sun (weatherall mix)
04 blur – tender
05 spiritualized – goodnight goodnight
06 pavement – box elder
07 iggy & the stooges – 1969

Groove Armada U.S. Tour Dates + Free Download

Posted in Uncategorized on February 18, 2010 by dk

Andy Cato and Tom Findlay, better known as Groove Armada, have announced a spring U.S. tour in support of Black Light, their sixth studio album releasing March 2 on Om Records. The tour will find them dropping by the U.S. for multiple dates in New York, California, and Florida, including appearances on Morning Becomes Electric and at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami. The highly anticipated Black Light sees the duo stepping in bold new directions and featuring an impressive list of guest artists, including silky smooth guest vocals from Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry on the single “Shameless,” vocal turns from Kate Bush-evoking chanteuse SaintSaviour, and appearances on several tracks from Nick Littlemore of the Aussie electronic sensation Empire of the Sun.

Prolific remixer Classixx has produced a light and playful remix of Black Light highlight “Paper Romance,” replacing the hard four-to-the-floor of the original track with bubbling synths, softly skittering drums, and delicate, swooning guitars that bring out the passionate vocal takes from SaintSavior and Fenech-Soler. Download the remix here, and feel free to post and share! In addition to Classixx, several tracks from the album have already been remixed by other such luminaries as Mock & Toof, Bloody Beetroots, and more, all currently available on iTunes. Keep an eye out for a remix from the always fun Dan Deacon!

Download Reynold "Sincerely Dangerous" (Blaq Records)

Free download of “Sincerely Dangerous”

February the month of love, and what better way to show some lovin’ than this beauty from Trenton artist Reynold. The new EP, “What They Say”, is very special for us in many ways, we met Sam (AKA Reynold) a while back in Berlin and we’ve been very good friends ever since, sharing our love for music, food, politics and many aspects of life. We have also been big fans of the Trenton sound from day one, being able to release his music on our label means so much to us, this is a great time for blaq records, slowly but surely growing in the direction that we once dreamed of…

This EP contains two original tracks: “What They Say” is a deep and moody dance gem, bringing back lots of old school flavour with a total new style and futuristic arrangements. The strings tell you about wide open spaces of grey delicacy…somehow catching a winter sky sensation and bringing it to sound. This track is pure love and one that stands outside of any trend reminding us of how music is a universal language that is impossible to define.

“Sincerely Dangerous” is the second cut here, also with an old school twist. Reynold takes the beat up a notch and gets down and dirty on this funk tech house affair with spaced out grooves and looped rhythmic patterns making it sincerely dangerous for the dance floors!!!

And to round things out on this incredible release we have a remix by Trenton’s own Giovanni Verga, an outstanding producer from Palermo, Italy. With only a few releases on Trenton and Kina Music, Verga is already a favourite of many DJs from around the world, his sound is a wonderful mixture of organic and science fiction. His remix of “What They Say” is a mad romantic extravaganza, deep as hell and filled with beauty, using elements of the original and adding lots of room for a sparkling new take on house music…..

Release date: February, 26th 2010

LV "OKZHARP mix" for Blackdown Feb 2010

Posted in Uncategorized on February 17, 2010 by dk

Gerb from LV (who has previously released on Hyperdub) travelled through South Africa over Christmas, and explored the culture of taxi drivers affiliated with soundsystems.

There’s a fantastic interview with Martin ‘Blackdown’ Clark (Keysound) here

Gerb: “This is a selection of favorites from the trip, plus a couple of things I got sent around the time. Will, Si and I put it together immediately after i got back. It’s got a rub of Dream Cargo in there that’s actually closer to the original tempo of the demo that Kode 9 heard. Seemed a nice fit. The mix starts with an outtake of Smiso saying ‘OK ZHARP’ which became like a catchphrase for my time out there and it ends on a personal note, our dub version of a new collab track. The track was started in 35 degree heat in Fletcher African Dope’s beachside studio in Muizenberg, Cape Town…and finished in a cold room in South London.”
