The undisputed doyen of LA boogie Funk lays down the second installment of his ‘Toeachizown’ sessions for all the digital cats. Part 2 warms up for the forthcoming full album with six straight-up mean boogie tracks from the burgundy squeals of ‘Flying V Ride’ to the fluttering synth drones and electro-sex riffage of ‘Candy Dancin’ designed to immediately make anyone with a copy 10 x times cooler than they were previously. ‘Burn Straight Thru U’ features some immense soloing over buttered machine beats, while ’10 West’ soaks up heated late-night moonray synths, ‘I Wanna Know’ scarily approximates prime-era Prince and ‘Rollin’ proves his serious West-Coast G-Funk credentials. Slip this in your portable 8-track and go pick up some honeyz down the strip. Dâm HOT!(boomkat)

About burnkane
For most folk the word Beatwife means alot more than the word Burnkane. Beatwife has been decimating the circuit over the last 12/18 months with his unique and instantly recognizable squelched acidcore and awe inspiring live shows, all the accolades for this quite special producer are fully deserved, with releases on Love Love, Wrong music and Meganeural expect alot more in 2009… Burnkane is his dubglitch, breakbeaty trip hoppy alias and is relatively unknown compared with his Beatwife counterpart… Me thinks not for long! With an upcoming release on Love Love as part of the “night surgeons” project his dark and eerie take on all of the aforementioned genres is forward thinking, dancefloor friendly complex minimalism at its best. At times its dark and asks questions of the listener, but at other times there are glimpses of light with the delicate vocals that bring a whole new feel and meaning to the song. This has been none stop playing in my household, whether its first thing in the morning on last thing at night, it hits the spot everytime…

Untold -XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Bass, Dub Step, Electronic, Funky, Grime, Wonky, XLR8R Podcast on September 11, 2009 by J.D.

XLR8R recently took a closer look at U.K. producer Untold (a.k.a. Jack Dunning), whose handful of releases on Hessle Audio, Hotflush, and his own Hemlock imprint have quickly established him among a handful of artists pushing dubstep beyond bass-in-your-face nonsense. We figured that if anyone was going to provide a look at where the genre was headed, it would be Untold, so we enlisted him to put together this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Taking an open-minded approach and liberally utilizing his stock of unreleased tunes, Untold slots heady and experimental tracks alongside animated dancefloor cuts, and even finds time to dabble in some classic house and B-more club. If this mix is any indication, dubstep’s future remains bright.

XLR8R Podcast-Labels We Love: Wireblock Records

Posted in Bass, Dub Step, Electronic, Funky, Grime, Podcast, Wonky, XLR8R Podcast on September 3, 2009 by J.D.

For the final installment of our Labels We Love podcast series, we head to Glasgow, Scotland. The city has a reputation for gloomy weather, but you’d never know it from the crunked-up glitch rave turned out by the Wireblock Records gang. The label, which we recently profiled in greater detail, is home to artists like Rustie and Hudson Mohawke and is headed up by brothers Neil (a.k.a. Nelson) and Calum (a.k.a. Spencer) Morton, along with Dress2Sweat’s Jack Revill. Here, the Morton brothers have teamed up to put together a genre-hopping, bass-heavy mix that’s simply bursting with tunes, including plenty of unreleased goodies. Keen-eyed trainspotters might also notice that a few of the new tracks are credited to Numbers, the long-running club night spearheaded by the Wireblock gang in conjunction with a number of Glasgow’s finest party starters.

RA.170 FaltyDL

Posted in Bass, Dub Step, Electronic, Funky, Grime, Podcast, RA, Wonky on September 1, 2009 by J.D.

The NYC-based 2-stepper mixes up the tempo on this week’s RA podcast.

Looking at Planet Mu’s 2009 release schedule, you can’t help but feel slightly overwhelmed. Come the beginning of September, Mike Paradinas (AKA µ-Ziq) has already released albums by Shitmat, Milanese, Like Vibert, Few Nolder, Venetian Snares, Legion Of Two and Boxcutter. But arguably the most interesting full-length that the label has birthed this year is the debut album from New York-based producer Andrew Lustman. Love Is a Liability saw the 2-step template turned on its head, with Lustman’s rich melodic textures and hyper-kinetic beat programming injecting a fresh sensibility into the genre.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Lustman has already completed work on his follow-up album, and showcased a fresh direction with his To London 12-inch on Ramp Recordings. While the title track on the latter sees him pull off a wonky house workout complete with wiggling synths and skippy rolling percussion, “Meta-Cognist” proves that he can also craft lush Detroit beatdown-inspired material with the best of them. Similarly, Lustman’s RA podcast journeys through beat-driven low tempo sounds, inventive new-school UK garage, dubstep and even some wild drum & bass courtesy of Luke Vibert.(more at RA)

FACT mix 75: TRG

Posted in Deep House, Dub Step, Electronic, Funky, Grime, Podcast, Wonky on August 19, 2009 by J.D.

FACT mix 75 comes from Bucharest’s TRG, and showcases his new Hitek House sound.

Cosmin Nicolae by name, you probably know TRG best for his dubstep productions on labels like Tempa, Hotflush and Hessle (his ‘Put You Down’ was the label’s first release, and Martyn’s remix on HES004 arguably their most well-known). But judging by his FACT mix, he’s currently pushing a housier sound: Karizma, Hot City, Roska and Cajmere feature alongside a host of new TRG productions, and tracks are mixed deep into each other. Plus it ends on ‘Trilingual Dance Sexperience’, which is such a jam it’s unreal.

Download: FACT Mix 75 – TRG

1. Karizma – Necessary Madness (R2)
2. Seiji – Hohoho (CDR)
3. Roska- Elevated Level (Kicks & Snares)
4. Mystery – Speechless
5. Hot City – No More (Infrasonics)
6. TRG – Now You Know (CDR)
7. TRG – Tribal Flex (CDR)
8. L-Vis 1990 – United Groove (TRG Remix)
9. Hot City – Hot City Bass (Ramp)
10. Mescal Kid – Magic (Size Digital)
11. TRG – Purple Lights (CDR)
12. Pearson Sound – Wad (Hessle Audio)
13. Saeed Younan – Kumbalha (Younan Music)
14. TRG – Discotek 79 (CDR)
15. Cajmere – Percolator (Cajual Records)
16. Dorian Concept – Trilingual Dance Sexperience (Affine)
