Shlohmo -XLR8R podcast

Posted in Beats, Dj Mix, Dub Step, Hip Hop, Podcast, XLR8R Podcast on January 6, 2010 by E.N.

LA native Henry Laufer may be a young fella, but the 19-year-old producer, better known as Shlohmo, has rocketed on to our radar screen in recent months with his lo-fi, psychedelic mix of abstract hip-hop, dubstep-flavored wonk, bouncy synth-funk, breezy trip-hop, and what sounds like lost gems from the mid-’90s Mo’ Wax catalog. Now splitting time between San Francisco and LA, in January Shlohmo will be releasing the Shlohmoshun Deluxe mini-album, so we decided to enlist him for the XLR8R podcast series now, before dude seriously blows up. On this exclusive, hour-long mix, he puts together a sampling of his own productions with a litany of unreleased and limited-release tunes, many courtesy of his compatriots in the Wedidit collective, which Shlohmo co-founded in 2008 while still a senior in high school. As our last podcast of 2009, we’re guessing this mix will appeal to fans of Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, and LA’s burgeoning beat scene while hopefully whetting everyone’s appetite for more great music (and XLR8R podcasts) to come in 2010.

Martin Kemp -XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Dub Step, Funky, XLR8R Podcast on December 18, 2009 by E.N.

Given that Martin Kemp has Brackles for an older brother, the fresh-faced London DJ and producer certainly has some big shoes to fill. Kemp’s discography may be short, but he’s certainly been impressive out of the gate with his first few tracks and remixes, most of which haven’t even been given a proper release yet. Since his big bro turned in a stellar podcast last summer, it’s only fair that we also give the younger Kemp brother a turn at the wheel. Loaded with high-quality tunes—many of which are forthcoming or entirely unreleased—the mix occupies that unique space where garage, 2-step, funky, and house bubble together in a uniquely potent brew. Let’s just hope it doesn’t spark a vicious rivalry in the Kemp household this holiday season.

XLR8R Podcast-Star Eyes’ Love from NY Mix

Posted in Eclectic, Electro, Electronic, Hip Hop, House, XLR8R Podcast on December 9, 2009 by E.N.

Until now, our City Guide podcast series has been focused on the West Coast, but we’ve also got plenty of love for our friends on the other side of the continent. This week we’re sampling the sounds of New York, and who better to survey the Big Apple than our homegirl (and former editor) Vivian Host (a.k.a Star Eyes). Although she’s best known for throttling soundsystems as a member of NY’s Trouble & Bass crew, Host has little trouble bounding from one genre to the next. Whether it’s the disco stylings of Metro Area and DFA, bass-heavy bangers from Drop the Lime and AC Slater, tropical tunes from Uproot Andy and 77Klash, hip-hop anthems from Lil’ Mama and Ja Rule, or dancefloor classics from Larry Levan and Madonna, her Love from NY mix and its cornucopia of sounds capture the freewheeling spirit of New York City nightlife.

Matias Aguayo – XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Electronic, Minimal House, Techno, XLR8R Podcast on November 6, 2009 by E.N.

Between the rise of his Cómeme label and the release of his new album, Ay Ay Ay, 2009 has seen Matías Aguayo taking a major creative left turn. While the former Closer Musik member once made a name for himself crafting the finely tuned techno of his Cologne-based peers, he now spends his days twisting and turning the sounds of rhythms of Latin America into new-school dancefloor workouts. It’s unclear whether the native Chilean is returning to his roots or simply enjoying the exploration of a new sonic palette, but we’re certainly fascinated by the results. On this exclusive XLR8R podcast mix, Augayo’s penchant for experimentation continues, as he combines several of his own productions with everything from classic cumbias to Latin-flavored flea-market finds.

The Heatwave’s Funky Bashment Mix-XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Bass, Dance Hall, Dub Step, Funky, Reggae, XLR8R Podcast on September 26, 2009 by E.N.

Recent months have seen a whole lot of hullabaloo surrounding the burgeoning UK funky house scene (including our current issue’s cover story), but significantly less attention has been given to how these rhythms are intermingling with the world of dancehall. In search of more information, not to mention a sampling of new music, we turned to The Heatwave, the London-based DJ and production crew headed by Gabriel Myddelton that has spent much of the decade firmly planted on dancehall and reggae’s bleeding edge. Besides running a highly informative blog and frequently performing around the UK, The Heatwave also hosts a weekly show on pirate radio mainstay Rinse FM. Airing on Thursdays from 1-3 a.m. GMT and featuring plenty of dancehall, the show has also become a premiere showcase for funky bashment, the combination of dancehall MCs with riddims both pilfered from and inspired by the world of UK funky. If the idea of heavy hitters like Busy Signal, Sean Paul, Vybz Kartel, and Warrior Queen spitting over tropical beats from Crazy Cousinz and Hard House Banton gets you excited, then this exclusive mix, composed almost entirely of unreleased tunes, is not one to be missed.

Move D Live in Portugal-XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Deep House, Tech House, XLR8R Podcast on September 18, 2009 by E.N.

Veteran house DJ and producer David Moufang, better known as Move D, is a hard man to pin down, so when he offered up a portion of a recent live set for the XLR8R Podcast, we jumped at the opportunity. Recorded over the summer at Plano B in Portugal, this set features the Heidelberg, Germany native weaving his way between cuts both classic and cutting edge, which isn’t exactly surprising given the wealth of knowledge he recently dropped in our Five Star feature. After more than 15 years in the DJ game, Move D could survive on reputation alone, but the man remains firmly rooted in the underground.

If you like what you hear, you may want to consider heading up to Seattle at the end of this month to check out a rare Move D appearance in North America—he’ll be taking part in the Decibel Festival alongside dozens of other top-shelf electronic acts, such as Mala, Benga, Caspa, Mary Anne Hobbs, Martyn, Daedelus, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, Alter Ego, The Wighnomy Brothers, Lusine, and many more.
