Above & Beyond Celebrate Acoustic Shows With Studio Album & Concert Film (Official Trailer)

Above & Beyond Celebrate AcousticAbove & Beyond will premiere their ‘Above & Beyond Acoustic’concert film on Vice’s THUMP channel on January 24th, and release a studio album of the same title on January 28, worldwide via Anjunabeats and on Ultra Music in North America.
Earlier this year, the group performed some of their best-loved songs acoustically as part of a 15-piece band, across four sold out shows at London’s famous Porchester Hall. The response from fans was overwhelming and led to two sold-out nights at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles in October, described by Billboard Magazine as “one of the finest and more memorable shows in EDM history.”

Above & Beyond partnered with Vice’s THUMP channel on the production and filming of the London shows to create a concert film that captures the Porchester Hall performances and the story behind the acoustic project. The songs performed at Porchester Hall also form the basis of the ‘Above & Beyond Acoustic’ studio album, which was recorded in the spring and summer of 2013 and features a 24-piece orchestra.

The acoustic project is a reconnection with the musicians that we were before we met,” said Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness. “The songs have been on an interesting journey to get here because we tend to write in a fairly acoustic way anyway. We don’t just stick a bit of vocal over a dance track – that’s not how we work. We try to start with a song and it’s usually only later down the line that we take certain elements from that song and progress them into a more dancefloor-friendly version.

With ’Above & Beyond Acoustic’, the group are putting aside their CDJs and lighting rigs to showcase their deeply-rooted musicianship and classical training. A band first and foremost, Above & Beyond are songwriters as much as they are DJs. Working with three singers, a string quartet, harpist, drummer and bassist, Above & Beyond are pushing the boundaries of EDM. Tony McGuinness sings and plays guitar, mandolin and ukulele, Paavo Siljamäki plays the grand piano, vibraphone and cello, and Jono Grant plays the Rhodes piano, guitar and vibraphone.

‘Above & Beyond Acoustic’ draws on the band’s greatest tracks, across numerous single releases, two Above & Beyond artist albums, ‘Tri-State’ (2006) and ‘Group Therapy’ (2011), and their Oceanlab LP ‘Sirens of the Sea.’ (2008). Below is the track listing:

Gravenhurst Announces New Album (Out May On Warp Records) Stream new track The Prize

Gravenhurst Announces New Album
The Ghost In Daylight Out May 1

Gravenhurst is the work of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Nick Talbot from Bristol, England. The Ghost In Daylight is his most sonically diverse work yet, building upon his brand of gloomy folk with starkly acoustic songs resting alongside densely layered pieces. The album’s lead single “The Prize” is a dark meditation on recurring Gravenhurst themes of compulsion, degradation and the possibility of transcendence, and contains some of Nick’s finest lyrics to date.

Conjured from disparate ingredients, Gravenhurst’s roots lie in the melodic noise of My Bloody Valentine, the lush vocal harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel, the alchemical guitars of Richard Thompson and Johnny Marr, and the widescreen ambient visions of Brian Eno.

Over the course of five startling and critically acclaimed releases, Talbot has developed and retained a unique identity across multiple genres. The inability to pigeonhole his sound is what made his music appealing to fans of former tourmates as diverse as Animal Collective, Broadcast, Explosions in the Sky, and Belle & Sebastian. Now five years on from his last album, Gravenhurst is back and ready to pull listeners into his world.

Late Night Tales – MGMT (October 3rd)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 4, 2011 by E.N.

Continuing the series’ 10th anniversary, 2011’s third Late Night Tales compilation is by celebrated psychedelic rock band MGMT.

Formed in 2002 in Brooklyn, New York the band consists of multi-instrumentalists Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, both alumni of Wesleyan University. Their 2008 debut album ‘Oracular Spectacular’ spawned the almost ubiquitous hit singles ‘Kids’, ‘Time To Pretend’ and ‘Electric Feel’ while 2010’s follow up ‘Congratulations’ saw them embrace more of a progressive, guitar-driven sound.

The band’s Late Night Tales selection of post-punk, cult indie and counter-culture figureheads reflects the band’s multifaceted sound, and draws comparisons with contemporary dreampop/chillwave/shoegaze/folk scenes on both sides of the Atlantic.

The listener finds MGMT presiding over the playlist “after-the-after-party”; daybreak creeping through the curtains earlier than desirable, broken bodies lining the corridors, the emotionally bankrupt kept alive by timeless songs of heartache and longing.

Luminaries The Velvet Underground, Suicide and Julian Cope, although not with their most famous songs, sit alongside less familiar names such as Disco Inferno; whose ‘Can’t See It Through’ from their final ‘96 album ‘Technicolour’ opens proceedings.

MGMT’s exclusive cover of ‘All We Ever Wanted Was Everything’ by Bauhaus sits comfortably alongside the UK post-punk-gothic band’s peers The Durutti Column, The Chills, The Jacobites and Felt’s brief but imposing instrumental ‘Red Indians’.

Paranoia strikes deep: the double header of Cheval Sombre’sTroubled Mind’  and ‘Drug Song’ by 60’s Christian folk singer Dave Bixby accentuate the hope offered by the ever penitent Spacemen 3 (MGMT’s second album ‘Congratulations’ was recorded with founder Pete Kember aka Sonic Boom), who deliver ‘Lord Can You Hear Me?’ in respect to the beautiful closer ‘Morning Splendor’, taken from Pauline Anna Strom’s rare ‘82 LP ‘Trans-Millenia Consort‘.

Putting a full stop on the selection, music journalist and Art Of Noise founder Paul Morley continues his ‘Lost For Words’ short story.
