krankbrother – Recollective

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 18, 2014 by dk

KRANKBROTHERkrankbrother is synonymous with London, with special moments and with timeless and quality electronic music. The London born brothers take time out from running their fine-dining restaurants and one of East London’s most celebrated venues, Factory 7, to mark the success of their five year strong event series with a compilation.

Ahead of an adventurous summer of activity hosting areas at Lovebox, Secret Garden Party, Parklife and Found Festival in the UK, Garden andUnknown in Croatia, taking over luxury yachts in Ibiza, staging their annual East London street party and continuing with their monthly events in the capital, the DJ duo bring together music from past and future guests such as Andrew Weatherall, Mr G & Magda and also debut two of their own studio productions with ‘Electric Lucifer’ and ‘Together’.

Spread over two discs, the first gives a clear representation of their musical footprint whilst in the club, starting with a solid Move D remix and closing with a John Tejada grand finale, while the second is an intuitive excursion into the brothers´ broader musical style, as well as showcasing the versatility and unpredictability of the krankbrother sound and their ‘off location’ events, featuring a transgender door picker and stylish, devoted crowds. Opening with DJ Harvey’s infamous Locussolus, taking in Hunee’s ‘Rare Silk’ and closing with the indelible ESP’s ‘It’s You’ and Space ‘Carry On, Turn Me On’.

Masterpiece mixed by Andrew Weatherall

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 12, 2012 by dk

Andrew Weatherall is to electronic music what James Brown is to soul. The master of reinvention, the humble godfather and a true leader of our time, this quintessential gentlemen cares so little about following he is light years ahead of the pack. Now he digs deep to share his influences from across the ages for the special Masterpiece series, spanning three discs of inspirational treasures.

Following the likes of Gilles Peterson and Francois K, Masterpiece brings you legends from the world of music. Who else could join the dots between styles so vast a resume as acid house, rockabilly, electronica, techno, post punk, deep house and countless unclassifiable rare cuts than the man who has been collecting records for over three decades with no regard for their origin or trends.

A campaign started by his army of fans to crown him the new John Peeland award him his own BBC Radio show had the media in a spin to support it. That’s because Weatherall is a maverick, never a people pleaser he has made many an unpopular choice during his thirty plus year career, but he stands by them and for that he has been crowned the ultimate music selector and king of the dancefloor.

His colourful past is an entangled mess of flirtations with the underground and the elite. Early involvement at London’s first acid house club Shoom, remixing rock stars such as Bjork, Friendly Fires, My Bloody Valentine, Happy Mondays, and not to forget the illustrious production of Primal Scream’s landmark early 90s album ‘Screamadelica’ has been offset with regular experimental triumphs as Two Lone Swordsman, Sabres of Paradise and others as Weatherall humbly shies away from the limelight and is beckoned into the sub-terrain to develop the dark sounds he has become known and respected for.

Predictably it’s impossible to classify the material Weatherall has picked for Masterpiece. From The Horrors to Kasper BjorkeTornado Wallace to Cut Copy, and Todd Terje to Toddla T, each disc showcases his unique ability to veer between styles and never quite be noticed. Heavily peppered with his own edits and remixes, it’s an honest representation of his imaginative and unpredictable take on a sound that spans generations.

Opening aptly with A Love From Outer Space’, an ode to the heart of this project, the name is also the title of his eclectic all night party alongside Sean Johnston that started in 2010 and became a cult night now found at festivals and clubs worldwide. The aim was to slow things down and never knowingly exceed 122bpm, working through spaced out treats, proto-house, industrial, rare dubs and and slo-mo beats.

The result is seductive and addictive, a must-have for train-spotters and a door opener for the newly converted. But most of all finally marks down the vision of one of the greatest musical innovators of our time.

Geddes presents mulletover: The Story So Far 2004-2012

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on March 26, 2012 by dk

London is saturated with clubs so for one to keep growing takes something special. mulletover celebrate 8 years with a special CD debut release to mark their journey to date mixed by programmer, creator and resident DJ Geddes.

Visitors to London are often looking for a party. No other event has made such a dramatic mark on the UK’s capital than mulletover. Maybe not the first event to take place in a warehouse, but it was the one that led the way to stage events in rotating spaces. This led to an underground culture of secret venues and the reinvigoration of many derelict spaces in East London.

Nowadays mulletover pulls crowds of 3000 people and sell out shows in durations akin to festival fever. Regularly asked to host at internationally renowned events, this year alone they can be found at BLOC festivals in London and Hideout in Croatia. Past endeavours include Lovebox and a season residency at We Love.., Ibiza. Now globally recognized as one of the leading cutting edge brands in dance music, they are still growing every day.

As other brands would look to capitalize, mulletover are turning things on their head. From next year they will only host two events in their London home, a move to concentrate on quality rather than quantity. As every other event in London seems to be held in secret venues with poor production and facilities, mulletover want to focus on the experience. Their move to large purpose-built venues such as the O2 and Pulse has scaled this DIY grass roots project into an international event. This was all possible due to the pride and attention to detail. Geddes has the ear of an engineer and an impeccable standard for sound. His consistency ensures every artist on the bill complements each other and he has closed nearly every mulletover event to date, while Rob Star has an acute talent for event production and combined they ensure that everyone who has attended won’t forget it.

Geddes has handpicked a selection of tracks that are representative of the sound of mulletover over the past 8 years including classics from Liberty City and Nina Kravitz as well as forward thinking diverse cuts from SCB(Scuba) and Maya Jane ColesHuxley and new signings to murmurSonogama. A special 8 page booklet will accompany the release with each page a description of each year and the release will be given away as part of the ticket for the 8th Birthday event. Released on Geddes’ cult murmur label as a follow up to his solo ‘Inner City Man’ EP, this release unveils a more driving and darker side than he is known for.

Label: murmur
Cat no: MURMURCD02
Distribution: Above Board
Released: Monday May 7th, 2012

  1. Sonogama ‘Hypnotic Beat’ (exclusive track)
  2. Maya Jane Coles ‘Dubchild’
  3. Gideon Bouwens ‘ Life Stories Part 2’
  4. Toby Tobias ‘In Your Eyes’ (James Teej remix)
  5. Delusions Of Grandeur ‘Don’t Sleep’
  6. Shall Ocin ‘Movin On’
  7. Ethyl & Huxley ‘3 Feet High’
  8. SCB ‘Mace’
  9. Will Saul & Tam Cooper ‘Tech Noir’ (Phonique remix)
  10. Metrika & Bastard Love ‘Europa’
  11. Okain ‘Scream’ (Nina Kraviz mix)
  12. Liberty City ‘If You Really Love Someone’ (The MURK Groove)
  13. Hugo Barritt feat. Robert Owens ‘You Are’ (Efdemin remix)

mulletover was started on a Saturday night in 2004 by Stuart Geddes and Rob Star in a now defunct and highly illegal space called R House. Geddes was born and bred in the capital and had frequented some of the best night spots since way before he should have thanks to a sister in dance music. Bored by the current predicament and overt control of super clubs, brands and DJs and ultimately wanting to experiment and bring something new to the table, he joined forces with Rob Star and the duo never looked back. Rob Star had flirted in dance music circles also, involved with the much hyped but short lived club Home and he is now involved with some of London’s most renowned dance music events such as Eastern Electrics festival, Circo Loco, A Night With… and his own ‘Star’ series of venues.

Their journey to this point has not always been easy with many a venue shut down by police and towing their own line despite London’s ever evolving tastes. But they never compromised and acts such as Andrew Weatherall, Dixon, Greg Wilson and Carl Craig make rare appearances and those that have born witness to mulletover know they are certain to leave with the best memories.

Track of the Day :Cut Copy – Sun God (Andrew Weatherall Remix)(Download)

Zonoscope Receives Best Dance/Electronica

Album GRAMMY Nomination

Cut Copy’s stellar Zonoscope was just nominated for the Best Dance/Electronica Album GRAMMY. The album’s closing track, “Sun God”, showed us just how epic Cut Copy can get. Andy Weatherall’s remix brings out the track’s seductive groove and whispers.

Download it here

The Sun God single, with two remixes by Andrew Weatherall, will be available in digital and vinyl formats on Jan 20th (AUS), Jan 23rd (UK/EU), and Jan 24th (US).

This is the band’s first GRAMMY nomination and bookends a phenomenal year that saw the band play to rapturous audiences across the globe including a thundering Coachella set and headlining slot at Austin City Limits. The GRAMMY Awards will be held on Sunday, February 12th at Los Angeles’ Staples Center and will be televised on CBS that same day at 8 pm EST / 7 PM CST.

Zonoscope is Cut Copy’s 3rd and most ambitious work yet. It was released by Modular Records this past February and was met with critical raves ranging from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork.

Zonoscope is Cut Copy boiled down to their purest form, a suite of futuristic visions built upon primal rhythm tracks. It is at once their most immediate work to date but also their most sonically exquisite. “Take Me Over” perfectly encapsulates this, its chiming highlife guitars bouncing around tropical percussion reminiscent of an island holiday in a pop song.

Recorded over a 6 month period in a warehouse space the band rented in Melbourne, Australia and mixed in Atlanta by Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Deerhunter), Zonoscope paints a mesmerizing picture, conjured by a band at the height of their powers.

Locussolus – The Album out June 13

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on March 24, 2011 by dk

The Uruguay based label International Feel, prominently featured in many best of 2010 shortlists, is following the success of the Gatto Fritto album with their second, massively anticipated Long Player from the Disco Administrator himself , DJ Harvey and his Locussolus project

Harvey Bassett is one of the most enigmatic people you could ever hope to meet. His ‘anything goes, as and when he feels it’ approach to life and music has created some of the most out of sync, synergistic audio excursions of the past 20 years.

From his early Tonka recognition to Ministry of Sound residencies on both Friday and Saturday (so difficult was he to pigeon hole), onto his own no holds barred nights such as New Hard Left and Moist (guest starring Larry Levan), to the infamous Black Cock edits (oh and that Sarcastic Mix), the Disco Administrator has always stayed one step ahead by doing exactly what he wants, regardless of opinion, as an army of one…… a cult leader for a last generation of pirates

Having dipped his toe into the world of the Long Player with Thom Bullock on ‘Map of Africa’ he’s now ready to launch his Locussolus album with Uruguay’s International Feel Recordings.

Last year, Harvey toured Japan (complete with stage diving), Europe and Australia (no stage diving, but a Keith Moon esque destruction of his bespoke DJ equipment as the last record played, to ‘incite a little excitement and danger’) and still found time to fulfill a busy U.S schedule and complete three Locussolus singles. The tracks saw support from as disparate sources as James Holden, Francois K, Tim Sweeney, Trevor Jackson, Rob da Bank and Ivan Smagghe to name a few, as well as being included on many of 2010 best of lists.

The Locussolus album shows Harvey’s full vision, all together in one place, for the first time. To complete the journey, amazing remixes from Andrew Weatherall, Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, The Emperor Machine, Time & Space Machine and own Harvey’s dubbed out reworkings (and straight from the movie John Carpenter never made)….. new track Bloodbath.

This is Harvey’s Tales from the Nocturn if you like, a journey through nighttown, or what happens in Bassett world from Dusk ‘till Dawn.

And for some very lucky souls, a hand stamped, Harvey designed White Label of the alternate vocal Weatherall Remix, ah yes, the legend of Thickums, (sounding like The Stranglers on Mescallin) and new track Bloodbath.

Download: FACT mix 179 – Mogwai

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 27, 2010 by dk

This Friday’s FACT mix is the work of Scottish post-rock legends Mogwai.

Formed in Falkirk in 1995, Mogwai this week released their first live package, taking in a concert recording, Special Moves and a DVD companion, Burning. It marks fourteen years of existence for the band, whose early albums Young Team and Come On Die Young represent some of the most influential music of the era – taking the long-form instrumentals of Louisville’s Slint, and injecting them with a very human, and very British melancholy and sense of humour, looking to their peers Arab Strap as well as the likes of The Cure and Fugazi for inspiration. Later in the decade, Mogwai would work with Andrew Weatherall, Alec Empire, The Manic Street Preachers and more.

The noughties would see Mogwai continue to hone their sound, reaching new peaks with tracks like ‘Glasgow Mega Snake’ and ‘Auto Rock’, while also moving into soundtracking, working with Clint Mansell on Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain and most notably, providing the score for Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, the film study of French football legend Zinedine Zidane.

Mogwai’s FACT mix was made by long-term member Barry Burns, and features The Fall, Fad Gadget, Tuxedomoon and more – you can read an interview with him about the mix and recent Mogwai goings on over the page. Special Moves / Burning is out now.

Download: FACT mix 179 – Mogwai
