Simple celebrates it’s 50th single release in the new year (and each one of those 50 have been released on that wonderful black stuff known to old people as vinyl). A release that will see the founder, A&R, label manager and tea boy Will Saul and his long term production partner Tam Cooper team up for a limited edition gatefold vinyl double pack EP (yep, they’ll loose loads of money but not many people get to 50 vinyl releases without loosing their house, car and mind… so we think its worth celebrating). The release will feature 4 new tracks from Will & Tam with remixes from Wolf + Lamb & Slow Hands, Sideshow and Art Department (Jonny White & Kenny Glasgow).

Since its birth in 2003, Simple Records has been fueling dancefloors the world over with deep, dynamic house, compelling techno and flashes of many other genres. Totally unconcerned with the transient constraints of genre and entirely fixated on uncovering music that is both timeless and forward-thinking Simple has never fallen into one particular genre trap and under Will’s A&R’ing has won a reputation for delivering simply great electronic music with a focus on soul and irresistible melody. Over the years the label has worked with many of electronic music’s finest artists, including Motorcitysoul, Fink, James Priestley & Dan Berkson, Jesse Rose, Mathew Jonson, I:Cube, Gui Borrato, Mike Monday, Ian Pooley, Steve Bug, Deetron, Sebo K, Adultnapper, Adam Marshall and many many more.

Saul’s approach to DJing sees him tread the moving waters between techno, dub, house, disco, dubstep and far beyond. His 3 disc Balance compilation last year enabled him to showcase his wide range of musical loves. His albums for the label includes ‘Simple One’, the first label compilation that elegantly encapsulated the sound of Simple, his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Space Between’, a journey geared towards home listening rather than the dancefloor and ‘Simple Sounds’ where he attempted to blur the distinction between the traditional artist LP and DJ mix. Will’s next artist album is fast approaching completion and will see the light of day in spring 2011 and will feature collaborations with Fink, Joe Dukie (Fat Freddie’s Drop), Charlene Soraia (new signing to Peacefrog), Detachments and Paul St.Hilaire. As well as being one of Will’s oldest and closest friends Tam Cooper is a studio engineer par excellence, who over the years has worked with a range of artists from Bushwacka! and Terry Francis to Grooverider and Mr.C. He is also the man behind the now legendary live breaks act Precision Cuts.

First up on remix duties are Art Department, hot on the heels of their monster debut hit ‘Without You’ (voted No.1 single of 2010 in Groove) on Crosstown Rebels, who turn the tempo down and the sleaze up. Another Simple mainstay the dub master, Sideshow, toughs out his version with a driving bassline and some cheeky dub-wise rhythm changes. NYC based juggernauts Wolf+Lamb, and their protégé Slow Hands, bring their magic wonky disco touch to the more upbeat title track.

All the artwork for this project (there will also be a limited edition A2 poster and T-Shirt) has been lovingly created by Michael Place of Build who is behind the visual identity of Simple (and sister label Aus Music). Place was also one of the founders of Designers Republic who have produced all the Warp artwork from day one. The double pack will be available in a very limited run of 500 so best to get in quick for a piece of this label’s history! The digital album version also comes with a select mix of some of Will originals from over the years.

Ramadanman & Appleblim — Void 23 (Carl Craig Re-Edit)(preview)

Will Saul’s imprint, Aus Music, returns with the much anticipated Ramadanman and Appleblim single “Void 23”, which comes complete with a re-edit from one of the cornerstones of electronic music – Carl Craig. The original track, featured on Damian Lazarus’ just released fabric 54 compilation, further fuses the production sensibilities of dubstep with the sounds and vibes of techno to devastating effect. Carl Craig delivers more than just a re-edit, changing the rhythm structure of the original to enable it to work in peak time house and techno settings. Erol Alkin recently declared that the c2 edit “just blew my mind” after hearing Ramadanman drop it at a recent gig.

In 2010, Carl Craig could be found working on remixes for fellow artists Hot Chip, Radio Slave and Kenny Larkin. This year, Planet E, Craig’s Detroit based label, released EP’s by Gemini, Sandiego and Urban Tribe, to name a few. Next year, the label will celebrate its 20th year anniversary.

Ramadanman co-runs the label Hessle Audio with Panagaea and Ben UFO. He has graced us with several releases from his own imprint as well as esteemed labels Soul Jazz, Tempa and Critical Music.  Most recently, Ramadanman partnered up with Midland on a joint EP for Aus titled ‘Your Words Matter / More Than You Know’, pairing the sounds of classic house and garage with dub step creating something completely fresh.

Appleblim, head of Applepips and co-founder of Skull Disco has been keeping busy as well, with remixes for Paul Woolford and the Ostgut Ton label and the recently released Lipsmacker EP on Aus, a collaboration with fellow Bristol based bass enthusiast, Al Tourettes.

Download: FACT mix 185 – Midland

Midland takes charge of  185th FACT mix.

The up-and-coming producer/DJ announced his arrival earlier this year with the ‘Your Words Matter’ 12″, a collaboration with his friend Ramadanman released on Will Saul’s Aus Music label. This was followed by Play The Game, a four-track EP on Phonica Records that really showcased the breadth of his sound. Midland makes warm, tensile house and techno, but the narrative shape of his tracks and his regular deployment of fragmented, ethereal vocal snippets betray the influence – conscious or otherwise – of dubstep individualists Burial, Pangaea and Joy Orbison.

If his epic 23-track FACT mix is anything to go by, our man also draws inspiration from much further afield. It’s packed with unreleased material, including Midland originals ‘Shelter’, ‘Hub’ and ‘Dead Eyes’, together with his remix of Caribou’s ‘Sun’ and cheeky re-edits of Washed Out and Massive Attack, and Appleblim & Ramadanman’s immense, forthcoming ‘Void 23′. There’s also classic house from Kerri Chandler, shark-eyed minimal from Arnaud Le Texier  and DJ Koze, plus recent cuts from Space Dimension Controller, Workshop, 6th Borough Project and a special edit of Boards Of Canada exclusive to this mix.

Sideshow -“Fink Dubs Ep” out October 11

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 25, 2010 by dk

Label Aus Music
Cat. No. AUS1030

In keeping with his relentlessly dubby outlook, Sideshow’s latest offering comes with only one guarantee – expect delays!

Ninja Tune records have kindly allowed Aus Music to release some of Sideshow’s deep, intensely dubbed-out interpretations of the latest Fink album “Sort Of Revolution”, the critically acclaimed international singer-songwriter’s third album for the legendary stable.

On the vinyl we have the two Sideshow rubs of the album’s lead singles. “Sort Of Dubolution” (a dub of the album’s title track), comes as a classic Sideshow live dub epic, drenched in Fink’s signature vocals alongside an earth-moving bass line. Follower “Dub It All” (an edit of Fink’s “See It All”) is a stabbier, angular take on the original reminiscent of Scuba’s recent late-night masterpieces.
Sideshow’s re-work of the track “Q&A” kick starts the flip side – a subtle, persuasive track perfect for those comedown sunrises. Joined by “Don’t Look Down in Dub”, the track sees Sideshow transform Fink’s vocal efforts into a Thom York-esque creation – an ideal roundup to a tripped-out collection of remixes.

Exclusive for the digital release is Sideshow’s “Dub Is The Thing” – a vocal rework of what is possibly Fink’s biggest track “This Is The Thing”. Starting soft and warm the track features an intense walking bass line that wouldn’t sound out of place on an early Scientist record…

In addition to this EP, Sideshow has just completed two exclusive tracks for the forthcoming All Night Long 2 album on Aus. Also included on this will be the Sideshow remix of Nedry’s now classic cut “A42”.

Will Saul & Mike Monday“Sequence 1 Ep, +Scuba Rmx” out 20 September

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 25, 2010 by dk

Label Aus Music
Cat. No. AUS1029
Format EXCL12″C

Will Saul present the ‘Sequence 1’ EP, the product of the two artists limiting themselves to a Roland 909, a Korg Kaos Pad, a Dave Smith Polyevolver and recording their jamming on the fly.

“We wanted to inject some excitement, energy and randomness into this release, so decided to play the tracks live with Mike on the 909 and keys and Will on filters and effects. We had a broad idea of where we were going before we pressed record, and recorded a few takes of each track, then took the best moments from each. The big challenge was reining in the slightly chaotic recordings, but after some tweaking we found a balance between old school rawness and modern production values.”

Having previously released together on Buzzin’ Fly, remixed for DFA (The Juan Maclean’s legendary ‘Happy House’) and Applepips (Appleblim & Ramadanman), the duo present two exclusive tracks that explore the cutting-edge leftfield sounds of house music in typical Aus form. Future collaborative efforts will see a remix for Scuba (whose high octane remix of Sequence 1 features as the B-side on this EP) on Hot Flush which will be out in September.

In addition to their work together, both artists are currently in the process of completing their forthcoming solo artist albums. Mike Monday’s album is a project that will see him write and release a new track for free on his website every Monday for 10 weeks. A new means of creating and distributing musical material, the final 10 tracks will make up the content of the album. With a release set for Spring 2011, Will’s second full artist album will feature collaborations with Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy’s Drop), Paul St. Hilaire, Charlene Soraia, and Detachments amongst others.

Aus Music’s sister label Simple celebrates it’s 50th single release in November 2010 – a release that will see Will and his long term production partner Tam Cooper team up for a limited edition vinyl double pack EP. Featuring 4 new original tracks, the EP will also feature remixes from Wolf + Lamb, Nicolas Jaar and Jonny White & Kenny Glasgow (Art Department).
