Digital Release Date: 14th January 2013

’The PL’ is the new single from Bristol’s hugely talented rising star Typesun – deep, minimal, underground soul music that’s already a firm favourite with some serious soul heads. It has grabbed the attention of such luminaries as Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Mr Scruff, Annie Mac, Lauren Laverne, Julio Bashmore and Pete Tong and is already causing a stir across the blogs and key tastemaker sites.

Cryptic but emotive lyrics are set across an expansive instrumental that remains deceptively simple throughout, a huge part of the piece’s charm resting in it’s tension, which never quite releases. The YouTube video has received over 7,000 listens in less than a month..

File alongside Dilla, D’Angelo and Dwele – another hint of the diversity and depth of Typesun’s forthcoming debut LP ‘Work Is Love Made Visible’, due for release later this year.

The remix treatment comes from Behling & Simpson, another of the city’s hardest working production teams who have been making huge moves throughout 2012 with killer releases on the burgeoning ‘Futureboogie’ imprint.

BBE Pres. J-Dilla -Think Twice / E – MC2

Released: 2012-04-17
One of the most important musicians of our time. When we think of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye, J Dilla will be going down along that history line of greatness.” – Common (from XXL)

He inspired me so much. One of the best days of my life was when he handed me a record with drums on it. I was so honored.” – Kanye West (from XXL)

Jay Dee’s “Welcome to Detroit” was the album that kicked off BBE’s Beat Generation series. This seminal album (it even has its own Wikipedia entry) cemented Dilla’s reputation as a virtuoso beat maker with a remarkable range of talents. For the first time, (from that album) “Think Twice” appears on a very limited 7” single. It is a cover of Donald Byrd’s seminal classic featuring Dwele on vocals… it shows Dilla’s supreme versatility behind the boards (and on the mic — it’s not the featured Dwele that sings the h! ook).

And from his posthumously relealeased album “The Shinining” :

Common, meanwhile, does the Common thing, which is to ride the beat dumbly (but appropriately) on standout robofunker “E=MC2,” Despite Kanye boosting his sales numbers, it was Jay Dee who consistently brought out the best emcee in Common, his former roommate, and he proves it again here on “E=MC2.”

Jay Dee – “Rico Suave Bossa Nova”

Music lover, record collector, DJ, broadcaster… Perhaps most famous for his much loved genre-exploding radio shows on BBC Radio 1 (and 17 other stations around the world including Japan’s leading commercial station J-Wave), Gilles Peterson’s insatiable appetite for new music undoubtedly lies at the heart of his success. Worldwide is 10 years young and fresher than ever – a benchmark for broadcasters the world over.

Ten years in the making, this compilation is a tribute to a truly groundbreaking show, music and a serious music personality who is ahead of the curve and debuts awesome records on his show before anyone else. Gilles Peterson is a truly revered international club and radio DJ and one of music’s foremost tastemakers (possibly the most well known in the whole world) in a world dominated by style over substance.

The focus of this compilation is to present to its audience not just a DJ’s favorite selection or songs that stood the test of time but it represents a great collection of songs and grooves premiered on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide show before any other station in the world. It’s about music that Gilles has helped popularize across the world on his show which is syndicated in 15 countries. It’s a musical journey for DJ’s and radio listeners across the world.

In addition to his Worldwide radio show, Gilles is also the head of Talking Loud Records where he introduced the world to Jamiroquai, Roni Size, 4 Hero, Courtney Pine, Brand New Heavies, Galliano and many more. He was a key founding member of the late 80’s Acid Jazz boom and recently set-up a new record label, Brownswood Recordings, to sign and develop exciting new talent as well as putting on his Worldwide Awards every year in London and the Worldwide festival every summer in the south of France. His compilation albums have become legendary and he continues to be a breath of fresh air on the dance floors of the world playing a unique selection of music that is rarely heard elsewhere.
