This is a welcome return from Sheffield-based producer Grievous Angel who has been known for his slew of edits and live remixes – whether it be Grime, Dancehall, House or UK Funky. Having done this for Keysound label-mates Dusk & Blackdown as well as random re-works of productions from artists like Wiley (check 2009’s Ice Rick refix under the alias of Bubblez), Grievous Angel has got an eye for recycling existing ideas but is no slouch when it comes to his original productions either. His new EP on Forefront recordings see’s him manifest his love of UK Funky with two cuts that showcase his ability to move dancefloors with crispy drums and the undeniable swing of House and Garage.

Lead track ‘Kleer’ is built up around grandiose arpeggios over percussive drums that mirror the brutal urgency of UK Funky and drum programming of Dutch house. Whilst the basslines are militant, the addition of the whirring synths adds an air of smoothness to proceedings and builds a sense of eerie tension around the otherwise stomping effort.

On the flipside is his remix of J Beatz’ ‘Subwoofer’ (previously released on Forefront) oozes tropical vibrations with a tribal-esque beat pattern that ebbs and flows effortlessly and will work as a great tool in club sets. Rhythmically the remix possesses all the swagger of early Cooly G and Roska efforts yet there’s an underlying influence of dub as the subtle low-end bassline becomes more prominent as the track progresses.

Soul Jazz – Riddim Box: Excursions In The UK Funky Underground on November 8th

Esteemed London imprint Soul Jazz Records have announced details for Riddim Box: Excursions In The UK Funky Underground, a two-disc compilation due out in November.

Many of Soul Jazz’s compilations aim to survey a local scene or musical movement, and they’ve always had a soft spot for bass music from the UK; their Box of Dub series helped chart dubstep’s ascent from 2007 on, and just last month they released Future Bass, a collection of genre-bending tunes by artists like Four Tet and Ramadanman. With Riddim Box, they turn their lens on what The Guardian has called “probably the most exciting development in UK music since garage became grime.” The compilation gives the broad strokes of funky’s history so far, showcasing anthems by genre innovators like Altered Natives, NB Funky and MJ Cole. A few cross-over tracks are included as well, such as Kode9′s “Black Sun” and Radio Slave’s remix of “Blaze n’ Cook” by Stereotyp and Al Haca.

Kode9 DJ-Kicks tracklist revealed

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 19, 2010 by E.N.

Details have been announced for Kode9′s edition of DJ-Kicks, due for release this June.

The Hyperdub boss took a no-nonsense approach to assembling the mix, compiling what he describes as “just a snapshot of my DJ sets from the first half of 2010.” The tracklist is heavy on UK funky, broken beat, grime and R&B, but surprisingly light on on the genre Kode9 helped vault into widespread popularity: dubstep.

“[The mix is] definitely not an exploration of my musical heritage, but it’s not all new stuff. It probably signifies something about my relationship to dubstep that the mix only has a few dubstep tunes in it… Unfortunately, I fear some listeners, because of my background, will think that all the tracks are just mutations of dubstep.”

In addition to tracks by Aardvarck, Digital Mystikz, Zomby and Cooly G, the mix will feature an exclusive track by Kode9, entitled “You Don’t Wash.” The compilation will be the third installment of DJ-Kicks this year, following contributions by The Juan Maclean and James Holden.
