YACHT Release Trippy Double-Video for “Utopia” and “Dystopia”

“Filled with quirky, trippy electronic sounds and attention-grabbing vocal performances,

Yesterday Portland’s YACHT released their critically-acclaimed new album, Shangri-La, on iTunes through DFA Records.  It will be available digitally everywhere next week on June 28th.  The duo also recently stopped by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert (click HERE to watch) and Sirius’ XMU (premiering tonight at 9pm EST) with their live backing band.
YACHT are also unveiling their trippy, epic double-video for the first two tracks on the new album, “Utopia” and “Dystopia (Earth is on Fire).”  Band member Claire L. Evans explains the inspiration behind the video, which was directed by  Rene Daalder:
Rene Daalder has been a hero of ours for a very long time. As an artist, he’s had the kind of career we aspire to have: long, genre-oblivious, varied, dotted with experiments and rediscoveries, completely unguided by careerist motivations, brilliant and never limited. He’s made a punk-rock musical, a futurist web community, documentaries, strange and visually arresting science fiction films; he’s awriter, he’s worked with everyone from Russ Meyers to Rem Koolhaas.

It still feels pointedly surreal, but we had the opportunity to work with Rene to make two music videos for Shangri-La: “Utopia” and “Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire).” They’re companion pieces — together they make up a short film straight from the mind of one of our favorite artists of all time.
Without further ado, Utopia and Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire), directed by Rene Daalder!

Some might recognize the spatial environment of Utopia as being a 3D visualization of the ideas of the radical architecture group Superstudio. Superstudio, founded in the late 1960s in Florence, Italy, essentially worked against their own discipline, arguing that architecture and design formalized unjust social divisions in concrete space and induced people to consume unnecessarily. Their vision of Utopia wasn’t an ideal city or a perfectly organized arcology with room for everyone — it was a world without buildings, a life without objects. They dreamed of nomadic communities living the warm and human aspects of life on a vast, impersonal grid.
Superstudio’s vision resonates with us because we see Utopia in the same way: it is not a practical reality, not something we can ever physically build with bricks and mortar. The future is a blank slate upon which anything can be imposed, but it’s also an oppressive absence of place, and as such any aspiration for future paradise is a failure, because all we have to count on is the present moment. Adolfo Natalini of Superstudio:
“…If design is merely an inducement to consume, then we must reject design; if architecture is merely the codifying of bourgeois model of ownership and society, then we must reject architecture; if architecture and town planning is merely the formalization of present unjust social divisions, then we must reject town planning and its cities…until all design activities are aimed towards meeting primary needs. Until then, design must disappear. We can live without architecture…”
Of course, we destroy the spatial grid in the process of our Utopia, attempting to impose a triangular superstructure over it. The end result? A world of shards and memories, and in the end, a revised version of what happens when we try to actually implement Utopia: you end up on island of your own design, cut off from the world.

YACHT have already released their apocalyptic-themed synth-pop anthem “Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire) and now that the rapture hasn’t actually destroyed the earth the duo are ready to share its companion track “Utopia.”  Click HERE to give it a listen if you didn’t check DFA’s whiteout session last night, and head over to iTunes to purchase the track.  Both songs will appear on YACHT’s forthcoming new album and second for DFA Records, Shangri-La (out June 21st).
“Utopia” is both thematically and sonically different from “Dystopia.”  The track is a frantic piece of arty disco funk.  YACHT’s Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans fuse their vocals to create appropriately celestial-sounding, androgynous harmonies.  Multiple layers of keys, guitars, drums, and more pound away in varying rhythms while the two sing lines like “there’s nothing in the future / it’s up to us to make utopia.”
YACHT will be joining bands like Guided by Voices, Wavves, Atlas Sound, and more as part of Brooklyn’s Northside Festival.  YACHT’s show will be at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Midnight Magic, The Miracles Club, and DFA DJ’s on Sunday,  June 19th.

YACHT Release Sci-Fi Themed Mixtape,

Confirmed for Northside Festival

HERE to Download “Science Fiction You Can  Dance To” Mixtape

New Album Shangri-La out June 21st on DFA Records
YACHT’s last album, 2009’s critically acclaimed See Mystery Lights, was inspired by an optical phenomenon in the Texas desert and their new single, “Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire)” is a synth-pop anthem set to lyrics about the apocalypse.  So it should come as no surprise that the Portland duo have a great affinity for science-fiction.  YACHT’s Claire L. Evans has put together a mixtape celebrating two of the group’s loves: science fiction and esoteric dance music.

You can also catch YACHT live at New York’s Northside Festival.  They’ll be playing at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Midnight Magic on June 19th.    The band’s new album, Shangri-La, is out June 21st on DFA.

YACHT Announce New Album for DFA Records:

Shangri-La out June 21st

Click HERE to Stream/Download the MP3 for

Shangri-La is YACHT’s second album for DFA Records, and fifth for the world. Shangri-La was produced, mixed, recorded, and performed by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans with frequent collaborator and touring member Bobby Birdman, at the Marfa Recording Company, Jackpot! Studios, and in temporary living quarters in Los Angeles, California.
On Shangri-La, YACHT asserts that the future is a blank slate upon which anything can be imposed.
Shangri-La argues that “Paradise is kinetic potential, a latency within us that has been eaten alive by time.” In line with the existing emphasis on self-empowerment in the YACHT philosophy, YACHT’s idea of “Utopia” is personal. YACHT believes that the only real sustainable paradise is in our minds, and hence creative output can be a tangible piece of the Utopia within each individual.
Shangri-La literally is YACHT’s Utopia, a place made of songs.
The conceptual Eden featured in this image from Shangri-La was painted by iconic science fiction illustrator Jim Burns, three-time Hugo Award-winner.
Utopia is nothing without community. Please join YACHT.
