Chris Kaz-Chris Kaz

Chris Kaz-Chris KazThere are no barriers with Chris Kaz, nothing too personal for him to share, and no emotion he doesn’t feel comfortable expressing through his music. Whether he’s composing for himself, as his dance alter ego “Boofi”, or producing for other people.

Kaz’s self-titled debut album is made up of ten tracks that push the boundaries of typical electronic music. Chris’ album is a logical extension of everything else he has done up to this point. While he has successfully released dance music under the alias Boofi (slang for boy toy), working with Ministry of Sound amongst others, he has saved his more personal work for his own nomenclature.

Every artist has two faces. Chris Kaz, to me, is deeper than Boofi, and more how I am feeling today. Boofi is fluffy, crazy, sexy dance music. The music I am making as Chris Kaz is totally different.

Listening to artists such as Skinny, Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead, The XX, Fink, Jai Paul, Nicolas Jaar and others has informed the direction of Kaz’s music. Emotional, relationship-based, and full of self-disclosure, Chris says the overwhelming theme of this debut release is love – being in love, yearning for love, running from love, obsessing about love.

The tracks come from a place of love. It’s very deep and sincere to me. I have waited a long time to release this album, and feel that, as an artist, I’ve been building up to it.

Kaz’s sound is part of an innovative subgenre of EDM music; unlike some of the younger EDM kids who jump around at all night shows, Kaz’s music is meant to be enjoyed with all of your senses. Composed with an intellect combining time and space, the album sounds almost like a live recording, allowing the listener to fully absorb this set of deeply personal songs.

Free download: The Echo – Responsible EP

Responsible - Hero Image + TEXT v2.jpeg copyIn a totally organic way, three unique and fantastically different creative individuals from West London have come together to form a musical collective known to us as ‘The Echo’.

To accompany the release, the trio has collaborated with critically acclaimed director Andrew Attah to create an exclusive video for the lead single. Filmed at The Central School of Balletthe video features the beautifully talented ballerina – Francesca Tennant, who explores the art of dedication and determination. Andrew Attah, also known for his work with Calyx & Teebee and Netsky, keeps you gripped throughout by carefully capturing every element of the ballerina’s emotions.

The Echo’s heart and soul lies somewhere between the realms of electronic R’n’B and ‘outside of the box’ dance music. With an ear for intricacy and attention to detail, The Echo’s sound draws inspiration from the likes of Massive Attack, Crystal Castles, Gesaffelstein, Kanye West, & LCD Soundsystem.

Lead single from the EP ‘Responsible’ embraces an overtly mischievous persona, accompanied by an infectiously uplifting beat. The track’s blissful groove and inimitable vocals flood Responsible in desirable waves of creative brilliance. ‘Signals’ channels something completely different and challenges you with its enigmatic tone and striking vocal delivery. Its haunting nature remains constant throughout and the down tempo rhythm oozes with vulnerability and style. Telling its own story, ‘Find A Way’ evokes an epic and romantic feel, paying testament to The Echo’s diverse flair. The throbbing beat and cinematic synths set a chilling scene and ‘Find A Way’ closes with a sequence of intermittent chords.

On remix duty – London based producer iOSounds mixes in his own weighty bassline adding an unexpected layer to ‘Responsible’. With previous releases on Kerri Chandlers label ‘Madtech’ iOSounds has been gaining support from the likes of Disclosure, Skream & Benga, Eats Everything, Bondax and many more. Closing the EP with his on take on ‘Signals’, is Brighton based producer/DJ Ambassadeurs. Stripping things back with crisp hi-hats and a sonic soundscape, Ambassadeurs savours The Echo’s atmospheric production whilst adding his own favourable twist.

At this point we know little about the new trio but we can appreciate their honest and pure production efforts. The timeless video for ‘Responsible’ will remain clear in our minds, so sit back and indulge yourself in it, listen after listen.

Dinky – Dimension D

Visionquest Unveils Dinky’s ‘Dimension D’

Released June 24

Dinky makes her evolution from inaugural DJ to singer songwriter and front stage performer with ‘Dimension D’ on Visionquest.

The project shows a tender side to the Chilean mistress and unravels a voice as delicate as paper caught dancing in the wind. Within each track she transforms into a new character to tell complex stories about relationships and encounters, capturing episodes of her life from New York to Berlin and back to her Chilean roots. Dinky structures the music with the looseness of jazz, the ethereal vocals of modern stars such as Beth Gibbons and Goldfrapp, while softly embedding the rhythm of the night.

Alejandra Del Pilar Iglesias Rivera was named Dinky by her sister at birth. Born and raised in Santiago, Chile, as a child she studied Ballet and the Suzuki method of piano before relocating to New York to become a contemporary dancer.

Her drive to make music brought her to Berlin a decade ago where she quickly became a dominant force in dance music, making her mark through releases on Carpark, Cocoon, Ostgut, and the critically acclaimed ‘Anemik’ album in 2009 on Mathew Jonson’s Wagon Repair. Her fifth studio album, ‘Dimensions’ sees her evolve into singersongwriter and performer and take on a new musical direction.

Long term friends with the Visionquest collective from their hedonistic days residing in Berlin, Dinky’s fresh approach fits within their ethereal and otherworldly style and follows the Footprintz album earlier this year.

Matthew Styles also coproduced and mixed the album and will perform the album live in a series of dates this summer.

DINKY ON DIMENSION D

“Dimension D” is a space where darkness and lightens meet and coexist. In each song there is a different story, personality and voice but they are also all one person who is changing their skin as time passes by.

It took me almost 3 years to complete this album. I wanted to take my music to a new level, detach myself from the rules of dance music and submerge myself in fantasy. During the last few years I have been studying jazz, classical guitar & piano, as well as trained in singing to perfect my own style of performing and songwriting. I grew up with bands like Cocteau Twins, The Cramps, Massive Attack, Chris Isaak and Mazzy Star and those influences are a big part of my musical identity.

I also love surf music, especially the dreamy guitar tone that resembles the sea waves. I used a lot of guitar in the album, mainly in an unconventional way so it transforms into something else. I am inspired by nature and tried to achieve natural sounds; the sea, insects, forest and animals ,these are all music to my ears.”

Dobie we will not harm youDOBIE ‘WE WILL NOT HARM YOU’ ALBUM OUT 4TH FEB (BIG DADA)
Dobie is a legendary figure in British bass music and beyond. From working on the first two Soul II Soul albums, he went on to produce London Posse’s all-time classic “How’s Life In London?” before recording a solo LP for Pussyfoot, “The Sound Of One Hand Clapping,” which went some way to defining the “trip hop” sound now enjoying something of a rebirth. In between he has remixed everyone from Bjork, Massive Attack, Les Negress Vertes and Tricky to Gangstarr, Wooky and Wiley and recorded for a host of labels including Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood and BBE, as well as producing and mixing for the aforementioned Roots Manuva. And that’s before you even get into his time as a legendary skateboarder and a photographer of that crowd as well as the nascent UK hip hop scene. A truly amazing figure, his role in Black British culutre from the ’90s onward is a story waiting to be told. His new album, “We Will Not Harm You,” will be released on Big Dada in February 2013.
