Omar face close up 1Legendary multi talented UK vocalist and newly M.B.E awarded Omar releases his brand new studio album – ‘The Man’ on 1st July on Freestyle Records.

There are precious few, if any contemporary UK artists whose creative credentials and influence extend as far and so consistently wide as Freestyle Records most recent signing Omar. Since first breaking through to worldwide renown all the way back in 1991 with his first releases on Gilles Petersons seminal Talking Loud label, and going onto work with all manner of musical legends including a certain Stevie, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Syreeta Wright, Common, and Carleen Anderson. With willing, enthusiastic and supportive collaborators like that, it’s undeniable that Omar maintains his reputation as a soul music Don par excellence.
Fast forward to 2013, and Omar’s reputation for being a thoroughly original artist following his own individual path remains undiminished. After recently picking up an M.B.E for his outstanding contribution to the UK music scene, even the British Establishment has now acknowledged what many already appreciated & understood for many years.
And in a most timely fashion, Omar returns with a brand new album that many say is without doubt the strongest of his entire career. The buzz generated by the single release of the albums title track ‘The Man’ (FSR099) confirmed beyond doubt that Omar is very much at the top of his game, with everyone from 6 Music’s’ Gilles Peterson, Radio 2′s Trevor Nelson and Jamie Cullum giving both major support and high praise for the simply magnificent new high point for Omar’s renowned ability to write devastatingly catchy melodies, coupled with the more live, funkier production exemplified by this brand new, yet already classic song.
Across the rest of this new album, the musical treats just keep coming and are too many to list! Opener ‘Simplify’ sets the template, with its luscious & majestic, string backed introduction raising the curtain on this deep, hard grooving number which gives Omar the chance to display the full range and capacity of his unique voice.

0

Getting down and dirty, Omar joins forces with Germany’s Hidden Jazz Quartett on High Heels, growling organ spars with the tough, jagged drum beat on this tough, funk driven collaboration, the story of a man who knows his woman is doing him wrong which is ‘making him crazy’ and is reflected in the contrasting dark & uplifting passages on this killer groove.
Latin textures & rhythms have always been part of Omar’s far reaching musical vocabulary, and within this collection and on Come On Speak To Me and Ordinary Day restless south American beats underpin the crisp and fresh melodies, with the latter track evoking samba fuelled, carnival vibes that simply sizzle with energy, and will wear out discerning dance-floors for years to come for certain.
Soul II Souls’ Caron Wheeler distinctive voice features on the duet Treat You, a tale of troubled love that is mirrored by the delicate, subtle beats and minimal backing which allows these 2 legendary voices unite beautifully.
Completing the circle that began all the way back in the early 1990′s Omar has re recorded his classic love song ‘There’s Nothing Like This’, which this time features bass player to the Gods Pino Palladino.
The touching sentiment remains undiminished, but the addition of soaring strings, soulful, jazzy horns, a vibrant live & acoustic feel, and an extended and new arrangement, Omar has done the impossible; improved upon the un-improvable, that is likely to become the definitive version of an already much adored classic.
This release will surely become known as his most eclectic, confident, mature and soulful album of his career. After all, Stevie Wonder knows, Erykah Badu knows….and now everyone knows, Omar is The Man.

Omar on Freestyle Records, coming out 27 May.

“When I grow up, I wanna be like Omar” - Stevie Wonder

There are precious few, if any contemporary UK artists whose creative credentials and influence extend as far and so consistently wide as Freestyle Records’ most recent signing Omar. Since first breaking through to worldwide renown all the way back in 1991 with his first releases on Gilles Peterson‘s seminal Talking Loud label, and going on to work with all manner of musical legends including a certain Stevie Wonder,Erykah BaduAngie StoneSyreeta WrightCommon, and Carleen Anderson.

Fast forward to 2013, and Omar’s reputation for being a thoroughly original artist following his own individual path remains undiminished. After recently picking up an M.B.E. for his outstanding contribution to the UK music scene, even the British Establishment has now acknowledged what many already appreciated and understood for many years.

There cannot have been many times a bass clarinet b-line was destined to become one of the most memorable and catchiest moments in contemporary soul, but on the new single, The Man, that’s precisely what happens. Add to that a stunning vocal performance, the slinkiest of beautiful key changes, and an uplifting vibe that simply emanates class and style, and you will understand why those who were privileged to hear The Man early on, all without exception, flipped, slipped and fell totally in love with its soul, its groove and irrepressible spirit.

This release sees three reworkings of the title track; US mainstay of conscious hip hop and electronica, Shafiq Husayn, literally leapt at the chance to remix The Man and gives it a minor mood feel, with spacey synthesiser lines added to emphasise this most memorable of melodies, Maddslinky (aka Zed Bias), came with a remix from a pumping, contemporary club direction including a driving beat coupled with spacy breakdowns and his trademark production skills, and Scratch Professer puts his unique stamp on his retwist of The Man like no one else could!

Completing the circle that began all the way back in the early 1990s, Omar has completely re-recorded his classic love song There’s Nothing Like This, which this time features bass player to the Gods Pino Palladino. The touching sentiment remains undiminished, but with the addition of soaring strings, soulful, jazzy horns, an all round live and acoustic feel, plus an extended and new arrangement, Omar has done the impossible; improved upon the un-improvable, that is likely to become the definitive version of an already much adored classic.

Marc Mac Presents Visioneers -Hipology(Stream)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 13, 2012 by E.N.

Since the late 80s Londoner Marc Mac has been converting audiences with his sophisticated take on urban soul. A hybrid concoction of breakbeat, nu-jazz, neo soul, drum and bass, and Hip Hop, its a polished sound plugged directly into the emotional highway of 21st century city living. Working under a variety of guises, his prodigious output includes his work as one half of 4hero, Visioneers, Natures Plan and Nu Era. In the late 90‘s Marc signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talking Loud Records with 4hero. 4hero went on to produce two classic albums with Talkin Loud icluding the award winning “Two Pages” & “Creating Patterns” they then set up their own label where the critically acclaimed “Play With The Changes” was released. Somewhere in this timeline, between producing music for Jill Scott to Roy Ayers, Phonte to Terry Callier, Marc started another pro! ject called Visioneers releasing a set of limited 7” singles getting the attention from top eclectic DJ’s including Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay. Visioneers was then picked up by BBE records who released the debut album “Dirty Old Hip Hop”.
While recording this new Visioneers record, Mac began thinking how hip-hop had been a (sometimes invisible) guiding hand in his life. “The music, the fashion and culture. Although producing all kinds of music from jungle to jazz, hip-hop (or at least what is was) has always been a part of what I do in some strange and sometimes very subtle way.” Documenting this influence on Hipology.org, his very own digital scrapbook (that has also spawned the record of the same title), it’s easy to see the depth of Mac’s appreciation of hip-hop. HIPOLOGY; the album includes hand picked guest John Robinson, Notes To Self, TRAC & Baron alongside some featured musicians Luke Parkhouse, Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra & The Support Horns. The result is a real cool, funky eclectic mix of breaks, beats, soul/jazz and freaky squeaks a great follow up to the debut

With What Were You Hoping For?, Van Hunt kicks out the jams with a spare but dizzyingly vibrant meld of day-glo psychedelic soul with glammed-up riffs and the acerbic energy of punk.  The album sees the Grammy-winning musician/songwriter/producer turning up the volume on his genre-smashing songcraft and the results are altogether gripping.  From the breakneck “Watching You Go Crazy is Driving Me Insane” and “A Time Machine is My New Girlfriend” to the metallic k.o. of the album’s first single,”Eyes Like Pearls,” Hunt unleashes a sound that reverberates with caustic wit, passion, and the thrilling excitement of an artist operating at the peak of his powers.  Careening with exhilarating intensity and frenetic, inventive musicality, What Were You Hoping For? is Van Hunt’s most daring and provocative work to date.

IN ADVANCE OF MUCH ANTICIPATED NEW ALBUM;

“WHAT WERE YOU HOPING FOR?”ARRIVES SEPTEMBER 27

Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer Van Hunt makes his long awaited return this week with the online premiere of “June,” his first new music in more than three years.  The track is currently available as a free download via The Huffington Post, which you can download by clicking the link below:

Free Download: “June”

“June” heralds the hugely anticipated release of Hunt’s extraordinary new album, What Were You Hoping For? .  The album – a joint venture between the Nashville-based Thirty Tigers and Hunt’s own label, godless-hotspot  – arrives in stores and at all digital retailers on September 27th.

“‘June’ was written to mirror a person’s complicated moodiness,” Hunt says. “Some people are called pessimists because of their persistent dourness – but I think they are optimists.  Sorely disappointed optimists.  The song is my attempt to make one, in particular, smile.”

Hunt will unveil a series of new tracks each month leading up to release of What Were You Hoping For? with free downloads available at a range of blogs and music websites.  Among them will be the album’s first single, “Eyes Like Pearls,” which will impact multi-format radio outlets nationwide later this summer.  In addition, free downloads will be available at Hunt’s newly relaunched official website, www.vanhunt.com.

Furthermore, the Los Angeles-based Hunt and his crack band plan to hit the road in the weeks surrounding the album’s release, marking his first national tour since 2008.  A full itinerary will be announced shortly.

Van Hunt first fell in thrall to the power of music from an early age, taking inspiration from a remarkable range of musicians and composers, spanning J.S. Bach to David Bowie, Thelonious Monk to Curtis Mayfield, Iggy Pop to The Isley Brothers.  The Dayton, Ohio-born musician soon made his way to Atlanta, where he drew acclaim for his creative production efforts and crafty songwriting, featured on recordings by such diverse artists as Dionne Farris, Joi, Rahsaan Patterson, and Cree Summer.  His own self-titled debut album arrived in 2004, instantly establishing Hunt as a distinctive and original talent with its idiosyncratic melding of R&B, neo-soul, funk, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll.  The equally inventive On The Jungle Floor followed two years later, highlighted by the single, “Character” as well as by a surprising cover of Iggy Pop & James Williamson’s Kill City classic, “No Sense Of Crime.”

In 2007, Hunt received a Grammy Award for “Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals,” honoring  “Family Affair,” a collaboration with John Legend and Joss Stone found on the 2006 Sly & The Family Stone tribute album, Different Strokes For Different Folks.  Hunt had previously received a 2005 “Best Urban/Alternative Performance” Grammy nomination for his breakthrough hit single, “Dust.”

Hunt’s third album, Popular, was slated for 2008 but remains officially unreleased.  Nevertheless, the album has become an underground sensation, a classic lost album hailed by LA Weekly as “a left-field stunner” for its “trippy fusion of funk grooves, punk guitar and soul vocals.”  In 2009, Hunt liberated a collection of B-sides, demos, remixes, and other rarities on the self-released collection, Use In Case Of Emergency (Rare Items From The Vault).

A charismatic and engaging live performer, Hunt also attracted critical praise touring both as headliner as well as alongside such diverse acts as Kanye West, The Roots, Coldplay, Mary J. Blige, Seal and Dave Matthews Band.
