Hailing from Central African Republic (C.A.R.), Boddhi Satva vowed early in his career to make a statement through a signature sound of his own. Ancestral Soul was born.
When music is the soundtrack of universal rituals – birth, graduation, marriage, and ancestorship, that’s Ancestral Soul; when music is simultaneously an tense argument between passionate lovers, a intense freestyle session between- or a revolutionary political speech by live instruments – kora, piano, sax, flute, congas, cello, balafon and turntables, that’s Ancestral Soul; when music takes over the night, positive energy is in the air and the mysteries of the unseen come out, that’s Ancestral Soul; when music conquers spirits, electrifies bodies and no word is needed to seduce, to serenade, to heal, to love and to share, that’s Ancestral Soul; when deep house music has modern Congolese rumba as wife, West African voices as mistresses, and urban R&B and Afro-Cuban ! rhythms as occasional girlfriends, that’s Ancestral Soul.
Boddhi Satva subsequently became a demanded remixer as “Ancestral Soul”
versions of mainstream tracks won over club audiences across the globe, in addition to recognition from connoisseurs and tastemakers. Osunlade’s Yoruba Records, Bob Sinclar’s Yellow Productions, Peter Adarkwah’s BBE Music, Tony Humphries’s Yelloworange are just a few music labels among many that released Boddhi’s productions.
In 2007 he launched Offering Records. It serves as the perfect place where he defies boundaries with innovative formulas and where promising singers and aspiring producers from different parts of the world find a launching pad.
2012 will see the worldwide release of the debut album INVOCATION on BBE Records, after it was released in Africa in 2011 by Vega Records, the label of the legendary Louie Vega. The latter hand-picked Boddhi in 2008 to be an elite! producer for Vega Records and a resident of Vega DJ tours. Invo cation confirms the solid place that Boddhi established for himself in the house music landscape. It is an ode to the ritual dimension and the spiritual power of music. It is a kaleidoscope that reflects the layers, nuances, colours, impressions and transformations that one experiences in life.
See, Boddhi Satva is dedicated to master his craft, to rejuvenate the treasures of
contemporary music, and to give himself the challenge of confronting his rich
musical heritage with whatever influences he brings back from his voyages and
performances in nightclubs in Mali, club tours in USA, open-air dancefloors in South Africa, beach parties in Spain and high-profile venues in the UK. Thus the song “Ngnari Konon” featuring international star and Mali’s most famous female singer Oumou Sangaré gives a clear idea of the destination Boddhi Satva is taking the audiences: generous and extravagant music that tells real life stories as well a! s makes people give their whole self up to limitless and code-stripped styles of dance – ritualistic, erotic, ecstatic, jubilant.
Invocation is coming!

Art Department-The Drawing Board on Crosstown Rebels,April 25th

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 10, 2011 by dk

Not since the likes of Daft Punk’s ‘Homework’ has there been such feverish anticipation for an album. Art Department have gone back to ‘The Drawing Board’ and rewritten the rules of house music for a new generation.

Label: Crosstown Rebels
Cat no: CRMCD014
Distribution: Above Board Distribution
Released: Monday April 25th, 2011

  1. Much Too Much
  2. Tell Me Why (Part I)
  3. Living The Life feat. Seth Troxler
  4. What Does It Sound Like?
  5. Without You
  6. We Call Love feat. Soul Clap & Osunlade
  7. Vampire Nightclub (Album Version) feat. Seth Troxler

  10. Tell Me Why (Part II)
  11. I C U

Art Department shook the world to attention with their debut in 2009, ‘Without You’. Named record of the year by Resident Advisor, Groove magazine in Germany, and coming in the top 5 for both Mixmag and DJ mag in the UK, the revolutionary duo who were pushed into the studio by Crosstown Rebels figurehead, Damian Lazarus, stepped into the limelight and began inspiring their peers.

Their often heartfelt and always inspiring sound has truly captured the imagination of the wider music community. Coined “gothic house” by DJ Mag UK, at its heart are beguiling basslines, deep-bleep synth foundations and the soothing croons of Kenny Glasgow. Like a haunting Robert Owens, his vocals connect deeply with the spirit of the current underground movement and his partnership with Jonny White as Art Department is changing its landscape.

‘The Drawing Board’ unmasks a pioneering ethos from this duo, whose quick rise to success has been unheard of to date. Featuring other contemporary stars such as Soul Clap, Osunlade and Seth Troxler, Art Department etch their profound lyrics (Living the life) into futuristic synth journeys (Roberts Cry) and raw urban rhythms (In The Mood) in ‘The Drawing Board’.

The result is a colourful tapestry and insightful musical vision. While they visibly pay homage to generational influences, from early Chicago house classics to quintessential hip-hop, their dynamic formula is inspiring for its purity and sincerity, and will no doubt be emulated by many future generations.

Art Department is the mutation of two of the most forward thinking producers from North America – house/ techno legend Kenny Glasgow and Canada’s fastest rising star and No.19 label owner – Jonny White. Both individuals have released countless critically acclaimed records and possess over three decades of experience between them.

Kenny Glasgow is constantly name-checked as one of the forefathers of house music. His credentials date back to the late 80’s and include productions on Tiga’s Turbo Recordings, Narcotic, Jinxx, his own Method 11/11 label. Seth Troxler vividly recalls his mixtapes being on repeat as a young teenager in Detroit. Jonny White’s blindingly fast-growing discography and revered No.19 Music label have propelled his rapid rise in the international circuit.

The pair, despite being close friends and stalwarts in the Toronto electronic music scene for years, had not joined forces in the studio until as recently as 2009, when Damian Lazarus called on them to remix a Riz MC track together for his prestigious Crosstown Rebels label. The result was the startof a new idea and direction for the duo, drawing cues from the best of both artists, and ultimately became the birth of Art Department.

At its backbone was the loose concept to invent a live DJ and vocal performance centred on their new ground breaking sound fusion and Kenny Glasgow’s unique and sublime vocals. His deep and rich tones had been heard ten years earlier on records like ‘Pressing On’, and when set in this new context become altogether more insightful and prophetic.

After considerable time locked in the studio the two emerged with an arsenal of musical bullets set to shatter electronic music as we know it. Damian immediately signed the material to Crosstown Rebels and his instincts were affirmed in the response to Art Department’s first ever live show at the 2010 WMC Crosstown Rebels event. With a sweet taste of anticipation hanging in the air, the duo met a welcome that matched the initial excitement for Mathew Jonson or Laurent Garnier at his peak. This was echoed in the forthcoming fever pitch activity of the following twelve months.

A year on and Art Department are confirmed to play their full debut live set at this year´s Get Lost event at Electric Pickle on March 26th with a global album tour to follow. Art Department have become one of the most in demand duo’s on the globe, taking their inventive concept and creative vision to new heights. But 2011 will be the year that introduces them as true artists without limitations as ‘The Drawing Board’ takes its golden place in musical history.

In early 2000 Giles Smith was already an key player on the London scene, running small parties and being the new resident of London house music gatekeepers Faith… In what was at the time an ocean of rock-tinged techno, he was relentlessly championing house music. Then Giles started secretsundaze with some friends in 2001, arguably the biggest success story in recent London clubbing history. With punters flocking every summer to their ever changing London venues and overseas club ringing them to organize secretsundaze tours, Giles was able to do whatever he wanted. A new freedom he used to develop and promote house music.

Today Giles is still running secretsundaze (which is aiming to get back to their roots with more intimate parties during their 2010 season coupled with a militant approach with absolutely no press or promotion). He’s most recently launched a booking agency – The Secret Agency. He’s also working in the studio with Martin Dawson as Two Armadillos, having new material lined up for 2007 and have just been asked
alongside Floating Points, Levon Vincent and Marcel Dettman to take part in a concept album remixing tracks by drum n bass heroes Commix on Goldie‘s legendary Metalheadz imprint. Dj-wise he’s got a busy dj schedule, with gigs lined up at some of the worlds best clubs such as Panoramabar, Sonar, Trouw in Amsterdam,  Robert Johnson in Frankfurt and Warehouse 702 in Tokyo to name a few, all of this fuelled by his passion house music. A consistency and a passion that’s reflected on the mix he gave us for the 11th episode of the FAMILIESdownloads series.
