The scene’s godfather looks to the future of grime on this week’s RA podcast.

Of all the hardcore continuum’s many tributaries, grime has kept the lowest profile outside of the UK—although one of the scene’s original innovators has been triumphantly addressing that fact this year. Terror Danjah was initially associated with the pioneering Nasty Crew out of East London and latterly the Aftershock crew. He’s produced seminal genre workouts like ” Love Is Here to Stay,” “Cock Back” and “Creepy Crawler,” many of which were collected on last year’s Gremlinz compilation through Planet Mu. Danjah continued to work with Mike Paradinas’ trailblazing imprint this year, putting out the excellent Power Grid EP in July, while his fresh instrumental explorations were further expanded upon via November’s Undeniable LP through Hyperdub. The sound of his artist album proper is nicely indicative of his 60-minute mix for us: garage, dubstep, house, rave and classic grime combine alchemically to produce something that very often feels not of any genre.

Night Slugs Allstars Vol.1

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 8, 2010 by J.D.

Up-and-coming UK bass label Night Slugs will release their first compilation later this month, entitled Night Slugs Allstars Vol.1.

Co-founded by Alex Sushon (AKA Bok Bok) and James Connelly (AKA L-Vis 1990), Night Slugs was born out of boredom with London’s club scene. “We wanted to bring on a new era and that is what we were saying from the get go,” said Sushon in RA’s recent Label of the Month feature. It was only a year ago that the party morphed into a label, but since then Sushon and Connelly have hardly stopped to take a breath: Allstars Vol.1 will be Night Slugs’ 13th release, and their first full-length. The collection looks back on a year of releases while also hinting at what’s to come, with singles by core artists, such as Lil Silva’s “Seasons” or Girl Unit’s “Wut,” along with unreleased material by newcomers like Jacques Green and Optimum (the latter of whom recently launched a label with Ikonika). It will be available on CD and via digital download.

01. Mosca – Square One VIP
02. Lil Silva – Golds 2 Get
03. Girl Unit – IRL (Bok Bok Remix)
04. Kingdom – Bust Broke
05. L-Vis 1990 & T. Williams – Stand Up

The time-traveling producer brings out a funk-filled selection for the RA podcast.

Space Dimension Controller was born sometime in the 24th century. Lucky for us, then, that he traveled back in time, crashed his Electropod and has been stuck here for just long enough to release some of the finest and funkiest electro-tinged records of 2010. (That, or he’s Jack Hamill, a young Belfast producer obsessed with hardware.) SDC’s sound may be retro-tinged, but it has excited everyone from Kyle Hall (who remixed SDC on Clone’s Royal Oak) to Josh Wink to the brains behind legendary techno label R&S.

Resoe -The Black Void of Space

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 1, 2010 by J.D.

Danish DJ and producer Resoe has finished work on his debut album, Into the Black Void of Space…, due for release in early 2011.

Resoe is a longtime staple of the dub techno scene emanating from Copenhagen. As a producer he’s put out a fistful of deep and delay-heavy 12-inches since 2006, both and his own and with Echochord founder Kenneth Christiansen as Pattern Repeat. He also manages Baum Records, a boutique imprint that’s hosted similarly dubbed out acts such as Leftover and Marko Furstenberg. The fittingly titled Black Void of Space… will be Resoe’s first full-length to date, and will consist mostly of new material, plus all three tracks from his recent Abstrakt Dimenzions EP. It will see release on Christiansen’s label, Echocord.

Shackleton -Fabric 55 (December 6th)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on October 21, 2010 by J.D.

Details have been unveiled for Fabric 55, this time featuring a live set by acclaimed producer and live act Shackleton.

Since his early records on the now-defunct Sull Disco imprint (which he founded with Appleblim in 2005), Shackleton has been at the vanguard of UK bass music. His dark, often tribal sound evades simple categorization, but as with contemporaries like Burial and Kode9, he is frequently described as dubstep. But much in his catalog suggests something different: his most recent album 3 EPs was released on esteemed modern house imprint Perlon, and two of his most loved tracks were remixes for and by Ricardo Villalobos (“Minimoonstar” and “Bloody On My Hands,” respectively).

With Fabric 55, Shackleton again joins ranks with Villalobos by delivering a set of entirely his own material. According to a press release, the set was tailored with the London nightclub in mind, and in fact specifically recalls a recent live performance in Room 1. Shackleton explains: “With the mix I’ve made, I have tried to make a set that would best represent the set I played on that night [at fabric], but minus the mistakes. Some of the tracks are re-jigged versions of older material, some of them are new. Some of them will never see a release in any form aside from this. Some of them are not even tracks just coincidental parts merging with each other between tracks. Those are the best bits actually.”

“I don’t expect everyone to like it,” he says. “I know it is not to everyone’s taste.”

Fabric will release Shackleton’s Fabric 55 on December 6th, 2010.

Lukid – Chord

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on October 20, 2010 by J.D.

London-based producer Lukid will release his third album this month, entitled Chord.

Despite having just three records under his belt so far, Lukid has carved out a distinctive sound for himself that lies somewhere between experimental hip-hop acts like Flying Lotus and UK-based artists such as Actress––the latter of whom will release Chord via his Werk Discs imprint. Writing about his 2008 album Foment, Oli Marlow described Lukid’s style as having a “low-slung, late night pace” and “punchy post-Dilla drum programming.” The new album will feature three tracks from that CD-only release (hence making their vinyl debut), plus eight brand new tunes. It will be available exclusively as a triple-LP, with a limited pressing of 500 copies.

A1 Chord
B1 Veto
B2 Rags
C1 Hair Of The Dog
C2 Child Of The Jago
D1 Saddlebags
D2 Through Gritted Teeth
E1 Lego
E2 Spiller
F1 Stripes
F2 Makes

Werk Discs will release Chord in October 2010.
