Mr Bongo is proud to announce the next instalment from the wonderful Hollie Cook. ‘Hollie Cook in Dub’ is a hypnotising adaptation of her enormously well received eponymous debut album.

Re-working Miss Cook’s tracks in a dub style, the legendary Prince Fatty adds heavy bass and reverb texture to Hollie’s beautiful, captivating vocals. Excitably the record features three new tracks including ‘For Me You Are Dub’ – a ska version of an old Andrews Sisters’ classic; ‘And The Beat Goes On’ – a brand new, heavy dub cover of the The Whispers’ disco banger; and ‘Baby’ – a new revamp of this hugely requested anthem, in collaboration with The Shoes. Prince Fatty has incredibly added further layers to Hollie’s cover of Shangri-Las’ ‘(Remember) Walkin’ In The Sand’ which she effortlessly transformed from a dark emotive song to one filled with a flavour of hope.

The dub versions showcase real tape echoes, heavy spring reverbs and alternate instrumental elements such as melodica, percussion and horns. All the dubs were mixed live in Prince Fatty’s studio in the same Rub a Dub style as was made famous in 70s Jamaica by King Tubby and others, i.e with fingers, late night vibes and re-arranged with a razor blade.

Hollie Cook was born and bred in West London in a household dominated by music – with Sex Pistol Paul Cook as her dad, music was always around – and she gravitated to the sounds of Marc Bolan, David Bowie and The Cure.

Entering professional acting, singing and modelling at a young age, Hollie soon rejected her performance arts schooling for a musical path truer to her influences. Family friend and Slits singer Ari Up persuaded Hollie to sing backing vocals for a new EP ‘Revenge of the Killer Slits’, which she followed by ditching school to join the band on a six week tour.

The summer of 2011 saw the release of her self-titled debut album which received critical acclaim from many and resulted in being on an array of ‘Top Albums of 2011’ lists including The Word, The Mirror and Rough Trade. Hollie’s self-coined ‘tropical pop’ sound stems from her passion for reggae singers Janet Kay and Phyllis Dillon combined with classic 60s girl groups. Singles ‘Body Beat’, ‘That Very Night’ and ‘Milk & Honey’ made waves gaining heavy support from BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, BBC 1Xtra, XFM, Kiss, Choice FM, culminating in a live Maida Vale session for Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and a Later… With Jools Holland performance on BBC 2.

Hollie’s live band played Big Chill, V, Festibelly, One Love, Jazz Cafe in 2011. This year see’s Hollie gearing up for the release of an album of new material and a 20-date tour, with notable performances confirmed at Bestival, Camp Bestival, The Vintage Festival. The summer will see Hollie play to her biggest crowd in Manchester to support The Stone Roses in their historical comeback tour in the summer.

On October 11, Bill Laswell’s MOD Technologies presents the brand new Method Of Defiance release, “Dub Arcanium Arcandrum.” This new album offers remix and dub style versions of tracks that originally appeared on the 2010 Method Of Defiance albums “Jahbulon” & “Incunabula” and features remixes from Scientist, Prefuse 73, Mad Professor, SubCode, Dr. Israel, MRC Riddims (the production/DJ team of Oktopus (dalek) & MRC (from Ifwhen & All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors), Perdurabo 6 and Bill Laswell.

In October 2010, Bill Laswell launched his brand new M.O.D. Technologies label with “Jahbulon” the first in a series of three releases from the group Methods Of Defiance – the collaborative project featuring vocalists Dr. Israel and Hawkman, legendary bassist/producer, Bill Laswell, keyboardist / Funkadelic – icon, Bernie Worrell, post-modern / futurist drummer Guy Licata, Toshinori Kondo and DJ Krush. The music is a blend of Rock, Dub, Roots, Reggae, Dancehall, Drum and Bass, Electronica and reflects the eclectic words from which each Methods Of Defiance artist floats in.

The second of three releases came in the way of “Incunabula” (instrumental versions of “Jahbulon”) while the series closes out with radical new interpretations of the tracks on “Dub Arcanium Arcandrum.” Scientist starts it off with a retouching of the single “One World” and later reenters with a ganja smoked up “Herb is Burnin”(dub style, of course), & he tosses a disordered ordered mix at the end to make it all fair. Prefuse 73 pushes his space-age hip hop way in, via the future, with his take on a piece from “Incunabula” (and you thought the original was out). Mad professor stumbles in dubbin’ his ass off. SubCode, a Moroccan remixer we have been chasing for a while, remixes as if his life depended on it, the Hawk track “Do or Die”.

Dr Israel remixes two tracks, one of his and one of Hawk’s and this is something we wish he would do more of, the man can remix, damn it. MRC Riddims, the production/DJ team of Oktopus (dalek) & MRC (from Ifwhen & All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors) join in with a reshaping of “Elijah’s Lament” done all Krooklyn style. Bill Laswell not to be upstaged, contributes two mixes from Incunabula, a dub out and an ambient version of “Quantum Echo”. Perdurabo 6, via the Basque speaking part of Spain, gives his almost 6 minute take on “One World” quite pleasant, really.

Tracklisting

M.O.D. Technologies To Release Albums

by Method of Defiance

& Gigi in October

M.O.D. TECHNOLOGIES created by the principle members of Method Of Defiance. This label is a modern evolution of the original AXIOM label – for the purpose of destroying, discerning musical  genres, trends, approved or unapproved formats, false ideas and other unnecessary borders. All releases are the direct manifestations of Bill Laswell and other key members of the collective. The label is formed for the advancement of art and communication, in all forms of the creative process.

Method of Defiance Features All-Star Crew of:

Bill Laswell, Bernie Worrell, Dr. Israel, Hawk, DJ Krush, Toshinori Kondo and Guy Licata.

Click HERE to Stream the Song “One World” or below

Grammywinning electric bassist, producer, and re-mixer Bill Laswell has worked with many of music’s biggest names on the planet, including Herbie Hancock, Laurie Anderson,  George ClintonBrian EnoTony Williams, Mick Jagger, Williams Burroughs, Afrika Bambaataa, Motorhead, John Lydon, Bootsy Collins, Carlos Santana, Matisyahu, Anthony Braxton, Sting, Zakir Hussein, John Zorn, and hundreds more from the Americas, Africa The Caribbean, Europe, The Middle East, China, and Japan.  Laswell has built a reputation on consistently working with a diverse array of artists, and rejecting the restrictions of genre, tradition, and commerce in favor or taking risks and uniting seemingly disparate voices.  It is with this ethos that he has formed the record label M.O.D. Technologies, which is set to release albums this October by the group Method of Defiance and one of Ethiopia’s most famous contemporary vocalists, Gigi. In addition, the label is planning releases from Dr. Israel, Gnawa Fusion, Afa Negus, and DJ Krush in the near future.

Method of Defiance is an all-star cast that consists of the following members:

BILL LASWELL (see collaborations above)
BERNIEWORRELL (Parliament Funkadelic, Talking Heads, Keith Richards
DR. ISRAEL (Sublime, The Mad Professor, KillahPriest)
HAWK (TrickyTool, The Roots’ Black Thought)
DJKRUSH (Ronny Jordan, Luna Sea & Ryuichi Sakamoto)
TOSHINORI KONDO (Herbie Hancock, Derek Bailey, Henry Kaiser, Peter Brotzmann)
GUY LICATA (Santigold, Massive Attack, Hercules & Love Affair)

Method of Defiance will release three albums, first the immediately accessible Jahbulon (October 5th): Ten songs featuring vocalists Dr. Israel and Hawk, keyboardist / Funkadelic icon Bernie Worrell, legendary bassist/producer Bill Laswell, and post modern/futurist drummer, Guy Licata. A cross-generational affair that incorporates elements of reggae, hip hop, dancehall, dub, electronica, rock, roots music and more. The beauty lies within its ability to touch on multiple overlapping cultural reference points.

This will be followed (October 19th) by Incunabula a spontaneous improvisation of musical interaction. The album’s lineup includes Bill Laswell on bass and dub efx, Bernie Worrell on keyboards, Guy Licata on drums, Dr. Israel on dub efx, turntable master DJ Krushand on electric trumpet Japan’s own, sound and fury – Toshinori Kondo with a special appearance by keyboard legend Herbie Hancock.

Ending the trilogy in Jan 2011 with the remix project Dub Arcanum Arcandrum a mix of both Jahbulon (the vocal) and Incunabula (the instrumental) by Bill Laswell, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Mad Professor, Dr. Israel, DJ Krush, and others.

dubLoner & Isaac Haile Selassie
to release
“The Fight, The Spirit” on de’fchild Productions

Free download of EP track “The Fight, The Spirit (Kush Arora Remix)”

The Reggae / Dub / Roots Music – ahem – Dubstep scene is growing throughout the global underground and we’d like to introduce you to a character that’s been at the forefront for a long time – Isaac Haile Selassie. On “The Fight, The Spirit” the Los Angeles-by-way-of Ethiopia singer/songwriter/musician teams up with producer dubLoner (AKA Kenneth James Gibson) for an original release that marries a classic sound and socially conscious lyrics with remixes that provide a contemporary flair. It’s an evolutionary step in forward-thinking electronic dub.

Straight up, “The Fight, The Spirit” is a beautiful piece of downtempo music with Isaac’s passionate vocals dropping over dubLoner’s delicate instrumental. On the remix front, Djunya opens his bag of tricks while managing to keep the structure of the original piece intact. Kush Arora brings it to the big systems with a bassed-up and more electronic version of the track. Still, Isaac is there front and center singing his mind. “Backoff!,” the second original track on the EP, is a dubby club track built with 4/4 house beats that twists and turns into a purple haze. Finally, Ruoho Ruotsi reshapes the track into a bubbly, underwater vibe that’s all about chill.

dubLoner is the reggae, roots and dub alias for the man known in everyday circles as Kenneth James Gibson. Since releasing his first record in 1994, he’s recorded under the aliases apendics.shuffle, Eight Frozen Modules, dubLoner, The Premature Wig, Men In Slippers, Cascabel Gentz, KJ Gibbs, Reverse Commuter, Bal Cath, Electronic Music Composer, and Hiss & Buzz (with Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto), among others. Gibson was also the founder of noise pop band Furry Things and helped launch Adjunct Records in 2005

Isaac Haile Selassie is the real deal and his global journey is one of intrigue and inspiration. Born in a rural area of Ethiopia, his mother passed away before he was a year old and unable to care for him, his father brought him to the capital city, Addis Ababa and gave him over to the care of the late Emperor, Haile Selassie I. Isaac was placed in His Imperial Majesty’s boarding school, which the Emperor himself established, and was overseen personally by His Majesty and in close proximity to the palace. Isaac’s last name is Haile Selassie because he was raised by Haile Selassie I. When the Emperor was deposed, Ethiopia was thrown into political turmoil and Isaac left his country by foot, walking through the desert and until he reached Sudan, where one night he met a group of other Ethiopians who were listening to Bob Marley, a pivotal moment in Isaac’s life. Marley’s message of love and peace resonated within Isaac’s own experience of dealing with life’s harsh realities first hand. From that point on, Isaac (now based in Los Angeles) has been committed to promoting harmony among people around the world and ending racism through the power of his music and lyrics.

“The Fight, The Spirit” is available digitally and as limited edition wax with individually hand painted sleeves from May 25 through de’fchild
