Riots in the Jungle – “Like LSD in the tropical jungle of the future.” – New SKIP&DIE video

Posted in News with tags , , , on November 5, 2012 by E.N.

SKIP&DIE have just released their brand new and surreal video ‘JUNGLE RIOT.’

Mixing the look of a David Lynch home movie cut with documentary footage from South Africa, where the album was recorded, this unique and original video perfectly showcases the bands visual and sonic artistry.

In lead singer and director Cata Pirats’s words, the video is: Like LSD in the tropical jungle of the future.”

Their debut album of the same name was recorded while traveling around South Africa’s Soweto, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Guguletu, recording on the go meeting local musicians – setting up mics at the side of the road collecting sounds and ideas.  They then went to Holland to finish it off in their studio on the 10th floor of an abandoned office block overlooking central Amsterdam.

Jamie xx – Far Nearer /Beat For (STREAM)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 6, 2011 by E.N.

After months of anticipation, Jamie xx finally releases his first debut solo single on none other than Bleep’s Best Label of 2010 – Glasgow’s Numbers label. ‘Far Nearer’ is released on limited edition 12″. The hi-spec 12″ comes complete with heavyweight vinyl housed in a fluorescent inner and die cut outer sleeve and when purchased on Bleep comes with an instant MP3 download of the release delivered straight to your account.
The boy with the midas touch has worked with artists such as The xx, the late great Gil Scott-Heron, Florence and the Machine, Adele and is soon to be in the studio with rap superstar Drake. Forget the hype / commercial success though, Jamie xx is an incredible producer and seems appropriate to release on a label whose integrity cannot be questioned.

The lead track is an understated yet powerful production, its ecstatic, steel drum-driven rhythm merging beautifully with its pitch bent and re-interpreted vocal phrase “I Feel Better When I Have You Near Me”. Countering the sweetness of Far Nearer is B-side track ‘Beat For’, a dark and brooding beast blending half-remembered rave hooks with the same sense of rhythm and space that characterizes Jamie’s work with The xx.

Bowly -Bleeps / Idée D’un Tropique (Berkane Sol 12″ Vinyl-BRK015)(preview)

After leaving behind the Somalian pirates, Geiom is cruising the sunny waters of the Indian Ocean when he picks up a distress signal on his scanner. He follows the signal until he locates a tiny remote island and a guy called Bowly, who said that he was on his way from France to the New World, but got totally lost. Judging by the age of the map he was using its easy to see how. Bowly spent his time on the island hanging out with the locals who amuse themselves by creating a unique style of music on some amazing handcrafted instruments. Geiom helps Bowly get on his way again, and leaves him with a more useful map. Some months later, Bowly beams over his music as a gift from his new found homeland in Canada – the tracks are like some strange mutation of those distant tropical players and the UK-based pirate radio transmissions that Bowly has been tuning into – Geiom loves the result and decides to send them straight over to Transition in London for mastering and release on Berkane Sol. This 12” has been getting played by selectors like – Subswara crew NYC (Soul Motive), Brackles (RinseFM), Grevious Angel (Soul Jazz), Martin Kemp (Blunted Robots), Cooly G (Hyperdub), Shortstuff (Ramp), Spamchop (Wigflex), Oneman (RInseFM)…

KidKut -ILove04 / Lilt (Apple Pips 12″ Vinyl -PIPS013) Preview

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on August 3, 2010 by E.N.

Adam Jackson AKA Kidkut has played a major part in Bristol’s music scene over recent years with his Immerse label releasing consistently outstanding music from the likes of Kontext, Benga, & Late to name but a few. Now Jackson is teaming up with leading imprint Apple Pips for the release of his own much awaited debut single. Apple Pips is the brainchild of Laurie Osborne AKA Appleblim who has made the label one of the most desirable dubstep/electronica imprints out there featuring music from Martyn, Ramadanman, Brackles, Instra:mental & more. Kidkut’s single kicks off with the pointedly titled ‘ILove04’, a percussive roller that combines elements of broken beat, UK Funky, & early dubstep, with snippets of garage vocals and intense twisted bass. The arrangement cuts and flows perfectly, chopping between rhythms and melodic parts with the breakdown giving a definite nod of the head to oldskool hardcore. The flipside sees Kidkut going totally tropical with the magnificent ‘Lilt’, a percussive workout built around intricate drums and rolling bass that underpin the euphoric summer inspired synth lines. Bringing to mind the stripped down work of Karizma, this is sure to go down well with the Funky heads, indeed Bok Bok is already supporting the tune.
Early radio and DJ support coming from Sinden (Kiss FM), Toddla T (Ninja Tune/Radio 1), Mary Anne Hobbs, (Radio 1), Bok-Bok (Night Slugs) & Jackmaster (Numbers)

Rita Indiana(Debut EP on Dutty Artz July 6th prod.Rupture & Shadetek)(Official Video+MP3)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 2, 2010 by E.N.

Dutty Artz is very pleased to announce the debut official release from Dominican underground superstar Rita Indiana.  For those unfamiliar with Rita’s vibe download her La Hora De Volver here, courtesy of Remezcla.

The main reference points for this single, No Ta Llevando El Diablo / Los Poderes (The Devil’s Takin’ Us Away / Powers) are merengue, mambo de la calle, punk rock, and tropical club pioneered by Dutty Artz. “No Ta Llevando” clocks in at a breakneck 185 beats-per-minute. It’s a ferociously catchy punk-mambo where güira scrapes and eerie synths compete with overdriven guitars as Rita Indiana’s imagistic lyrics paint a picture of social decay. Grannies living in trash, kids smoking rock: her dark scenes get transformed into a hearty lust for life in true santeria/voodoo fashion. Recorded with Los Misterios in the DR and produced by Rupture & Shadetek in Brooklyn.

The release will be available July 6th in all fine digital retailers including iTunes, Juno, Amazon and Boomkat.  In the meantime, soak your eyes in these:

Pocz & Pacheko – Zarbak Official Video + EP incl. Brackles remix

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 19, 2010 by E.N.

The phrase ‘tropical’ is currently getting used to describe a lot of different music; some good, some bad, some ugly. To save on confusion Senseless went out and travelled the world to find some music from the actual tropics, Venezuela to be precise. Somewhere buried deep in the mysterious rainforest, or possibly just in a studio in Caracas, they found Pocz and Pacheko. It’s so near the equator maybe we can ditch the ‘tropical bass’ tag and go for something new, ‘equatorial bass’ perhaps? Maybe not. Pacheko, Francisco Mejia, will be familiar to some for his solo releases on Lo Dubs, Murder Channel, Seclusiasis and for his work with legendary Venezualan expat Cardopusher. His partner in bass Pocz (Carlos Majoral) is a classically trained musician and production engineer. Along with a select few others they run Abstractor, a collective of producers, artists and designers, who promote parties, run a blog and do a fine job of representing bass music in Venezuela pretty much solo. The collective includes graphic artist Design or Die who is responsible for the incredible artwork and pretty special video for ‘Zarbak’. Together by day Pocz and Pacheko run a sound design studio in the rum fuelled pressure cooker of political and social unrest that is Caracas. Their training in high-end audio engineering is evident in the quality and weight of the production. Nights are spent in the tropical heat cooking up beats. Over the years an audio diet that includes salsa, merengue, reggaeton and other local music mixed with old jungle tapes, Rinse FM sets and lots of dub has helped them to build a unique and captivating sound that combines all those things.
The spirit of hardcore, jungle and garage from the UK are all evident from the UK Funky rhythms and rumbling sub bass in ‘Zarbak’ to the melancholy melodic refrains of ‘Dorado’ but there’s something else there too. There’s something tribal in the drums that taps into a deep history of Latin American percussive rhythms and adds a dimension that is clearly their own. If UK bass is about the energy and pressure of the city at night then Caracas bass about the point where the intensity of the city meets the wide open space of the jungle, the beach and the mountains under a carpet of stars. Put the needle on the record, close your eyes and imagine it. Also, there’s remixes from Brackles (Blunted Robots/Planet Mu) and Mr Gasparov (Soul Jazz).

1. Humidifier
2. Empty Alleys
3. Maga Bo featuring K-Libre – Nakhil (Kush Arora and Bakir Remix)
4. Humidifier (Club Edit)

Kush Arora presents ‘Voodoo Sessions’, a journey that continues the legacy of his bass driven Indo-Caribbean catalog. This time a tribal approach of funky, double time dubstep and African grime is the order of the day as Kush explores new territories for the first release of this year. Kush Arora has been sculpting sound in San Francisco and beyond for the past decade, branding his own signature imprint on dancehall, dread bass, dubstep, and Indian music.

The title track “Humidifier” skirts around the house tempo tropical sound, fueled with angular drum and effects edits. It contributes Indian remix theme elements into a completely new territory for the funky sound and touches upon edges of dub.

“Empty Alleys” continues on the sample heavy theme with a 138 BPM soca-step banger fit for any dubstep or electro DJ, reminiscing on a New York sound drenched in Indian aesthetics.

The release also features a remix of “Nakhil” by Maga Bo, previously released on Dutty Artz featuring K-Libre from Tunisia, with Bay Area afro beat dub master Bakir adding his hands to the remix. A grime and meditational approach is taken to the vocal, contributing sped up African instrumentation with industrial darkness.

Kush Arora has also recently recorded a studio mix jam-packed with original material and funky bashment.
