As the sounds emanating from London continue to morph faster than people like us can slap a proper genre name on them, and the number of producers and DJs involved in this funky/garage/bass music movement continues to grow, it seems like there are very few constants in the UK’s electronic music scene. As a result, a label like Hyperdub—which has only been around for a shade over five years—serves as a pillar of stability, even as its roster and sonic output exist in a state of semi-permanent flux. So when Ikonika (a.k.a. Sara Abdel-Hamid) dropped Contact, Love, Want, Have, her debut album and one of only a handful of full-length efforts on Hyperdub (the others belonging to Burial and label head Kode9), it qualified as a genuine big deal. Later this month, Ikonika will be following up that big deal with another big adventure—a brief North American tour that includes a stop at this year’s MUTEK festival. In the meantime, she’s put together this exclusive XLR8R podcast that was mixed live and includes all kinds of dubplates and unreleased goodies. We recommend that you listen repeatedly and find yourself a way to get to one of those North American shows in the weeks ahead.

Although he only has two singles to his name, in the swiftly moving world of UK bass music, Southeast London DJ/producer Deadboy is practically a veteran. After the appearance of his sublime U Cheated EP, the Numbers squad snatched him up and released the even bigger “If U Want Me,” which solidified his penchant for swinging garage beats and pitch-shifted vocal snippets. Those loves are readily apparent throughout this exclusive mix, as off-kilter percussion and diva-ish vocal drops populate nearly every track, whether it’s an unreleased white label on Well Rounded—a label Wooten helps run—or an old-school classic. Not many DJs in this scene are dipping into the Basic Channel catalog, so Deadboy clearly knows his stuff. We’re anxiously awaiting to hear more from this young producer—new song “Here 4 U” is sounding BIG—but this podcast should help tide us over in the meantime.

Egyptrixx (a.k.a.David Psutka) has been fiddling with beats for years; as this exclusive mix—which happens to be packed with unreleased and unsigned selections—shows, Psutka’s knowledge runs deep, allowing him to thoughtfully pull from house, techno, dubstep, UK funky, and whatever other genres he needs (gothy drone rock, anyone?) to create a unique sound that he likes to refer to as “celestial club music.” With appearances booked across Europe and North America this summer, Egyptrixx is poised to take a whole lot of clubbers much deeper than they’re accustomed to going.

Posted in Electronic, Podcast with tags , , , , , , , , , , on April 15, 2010 by J.D.

New York’s reignited love affair with disco has been going strong for more than a decade now, and My Cousin Roy has been right in the thick of it. As head of the Wurst label, Roy has played a key role in the scene’s thriving re-edit culture while also overseeing some of NY’s most legendary parties. This past winter he was holed up in the studio, often with fellow NYC DJ/producer Nick Chacona, with whom he operates under the name Beg to Differ. But now that spring has arrived, more releases from Wurst and Beg to Differ—some of which are previewed in this exclusive mix—are on the way. In the meantime, My Cousin Roy is in Europe, where he’s kicking off a tour this week. For those of us on this side of the pond, we’ll have to tide ourselves over with this hour-long mix of disco, house, electro-funk, and more until the man returns Stateside.

London’s Floating Points is often lumped in with the rest of the city’s burgeoning post-dubstep (or whatever it’s being called this week) scene, but it’s not unfair to say that 23-year-old Sam Shepherd is operating in his own sphere. Whether assembling tracks on his own, running the leftfield Eglo imprint with partner Alexander Nut, or leading the grandiose Floating Points Ensemble with a bevvy of live musicians, Shepherd clearly isn’t just another UK bass music producer. As this My Plastic People mix—made in tribute to the endangered Northeast London nightspot—proves, his tastes extend well beyond electronic music—much of the podcast focuses on jazz and funk gems from the 1970s, with only a few newer cuts making an appearance.
