Gold Panda sound of 2010

Posted in Dub Step, Electronic, EP, Experimental, Glitch, IDM on December 27, 2009 by J.D.

Gold Panda is at longlist from bbc’s sound of 2010
Gold Panda is a left-field producer and remixer called Derwin who makes instrumental soundtracks to half-remembered, dreamy summer days. He scours charity shops for old records and VHS tapes to turn into distorted samples, and wraps them in minimal, warm beats.

He is obsessed with Japan and its culture, and once sold his entire record collection to pay for a Japanese diploma at the School of Oriental and African Studies, before moving there for a year.

501 – Dangerous / Special Request

Posted in Dub Step, Electronic, EP, Grime on September 25, 2009 by J.D.

Subway keeps the international connection strong by signing yet another one of those Finnish talents, Subway. First up is Dangerous, and this does exactly what it says, pure danger from beginning to end. This one is just pure dancefloor destruction all the way! Next up is Special Request, another dancefloor stormer that is just to hot to handle.(UKRSH)

Arikan Simba – Power In The Word

Posted in Dub, Dub Step, Electronic, EP, Funky, Grime, Reggae on September 25, 2009 by J.D.

The latest Jahtari mission hooks up conscious roots vocalist Afrikan Simba with Rootah for a proper heavy dub session. Afrikan Simba comes to this plate with some heavy credentials, having previously worked with top systems like Channel One and Jah Shaka before lending strong lyrics to Rootah’s reverb spaced and bass-loaded riddim production on ‘Power In The Word’, backed with a powerful version and a truly mammothe digi-bubblers cut on ‘Protect I’, among the deadliest tracks we’ve heard from this German producer. Top-a-top!(boomkat,Listen/buy here)

Corrugated Tunnel – "Fallout / Bulfin" (Plastica Recordings)

Posted in Electronic, EP, Promotions, Techno on September 22, 2009 by J.D.

“Fallout / Bulfin”

Corrugated Tunnel

Plastica Recordings – DPFT039

Release Date: 21 Sep 2009

1.Fallout

2.Bulfin

About

Corrugated Tunnel (a.k.a. Edwin James) first appeared in the public’s view in 2005, securing support slots for Abe Duque, The Hacker, James Holden and Legowelt, and alongside Chymera at the Electric Picnic the momentum began to happen. His acclaimed debut album “We Are Electronix” arrived in 2006, combining shimmering techno with old school electro against a backdrop of ambient sounds capes. The album has been described by IDJ as “coming at you like Kraftwork jamming with Eno and Daft Punk”. Exquisite production is at the core of his art, and deep, melodic, clinical sounds pervade this record, which won the Best Album award 2006/07 at the Slick-DJ dance music awards.

A stream of releases followed, on SeedyR, JM, Ork, Elevation, Night Vision, Dance Electric, Systematic, Dirty Works and Urban Torque, with support from Oliver Huntemann, Derrick May, Laurent Garnier, Dave Tarrida (Tresor), Ben Watt, Marc Romboy, Groove Armada and Nick Warren. Many more releases are lined up for the next 12 months, including his third album, but first he delivers the second release of the re-launched Plastica.

Following the success of Plastica relauch single by Filth & Splendour, the darker and meaner sister label of Plastic Fantastic delivers two new Corrugated Tunnel tracks: Fallout and Bulfin. Both are dark and pumping crowd-pleasers, which will shortly be picked up by all the usual suspects. Also watch out for new remixes coming from Edwin, as well as further Plastica releases from Dan Cat and Default.

Ribn – This Feeling

Posted in Deep House, Electronic, EP, Tech House on September 19, 2009 by J.D.

Manuel Tur and Langenberg kick off the new Essen-based label Mild Pitch in fine style with yet another dance floor menacer, “This Feeling.” The duo have crafted some of the deepest records of the year, despite rarely getting soft like their deep house brethren. The secret for these small town boys seems to be in everything aside from the beat. Here, the bassline and its long chords are given a quick shimmy every so often, and the clouds of dub texture add a great deal of depth as well. And while the tempo isn’t quite jacking exactly, it’s about as fast as this duo seemingly gets.

The simple drum programming is given a facelift on the flip, a remix either by an unknown act named Rapidsnare or an effort simply given the name because of the titular quirk. The synths are just as deep here, if not deeper, while wordless voices echo into infinity. It’s all a slow build, though, until about halfway through its eight minutes when the snares come rolling in to provide syncopation to the stodgy kick drum that has kept time since the beginning. It’s a bit of ecstasy in an otherwise moody debut 12-inch for Mild Pitch, their name a welcome misnomer in this case.(RA)

Makam – Deep Loving

Posted in Deep House, EP, Nu Disco, Reviews, Tech House on September 19, 2009 by J.D.

Young Dutchman Guy Blanken, AKA Makam, is on fire. With ashes still smoldering from his bomb “New York Hustler,” he landed an apt follow-up, Deep Loving, on Sushitech. Despite being a mere 22 years-old, Makam produces with the kind of natural talent you’d expect from people he has probably grown up admiring. His restrained and low-slung grooves chug expertly along the layers upon layers of filtered strings, keys and lush chord changes, creating unique, soulful tracks that feel as timeless as they do forward-bound. Makam’s tracks are a labor of house, the result of many nights not in a studio, but dancing worries away in a club.

Deep Loving is three tracks of bliss, nicely diverse and full of Makam punch. “When You Love Somebody” is a hypnotic big room groover. New York-style deep house vocals smooth out the punchy rhythm as it subtly builds—leaving you lost in a haze of clubbing memories. It’s the kind of track that falls and rises so perfectly that it could easily have run on and on without tiring. “La Fem” is more of a DJ tool; a vocal loop and simple Rhodes-style keys play out over a chunky groove. Title track “Deep Loving,” meanwhile borrows directly from the funk of The Temptations “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” which is a surefire pleaser for the local disco. This EP, though, is all about “When You Love Somebody” and shows real promise for Makam’s forthcoming album, due to hit later this year.(RA)
