Future Perfect with The Juan MacLean -XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Electro, Hits Remixed, Nu Disco, Promotions, Tech House, XLR8R Podcast on March 31, 2009 by J.D.

The Juan MacLean’s single “Happy House” was released in 2008, thusly gearing up the dance-music world up for the release date of his latest full-length, The Future Will Come

That day hasn’t quite arrived, as the album won’t drop until April 14 (on Juan’s longtime home at DFA), but in the meantime, he’s prepped this exclusive mix of, well, happy house music. Whether it’s an upbeat, horn-drenched version of Hercules and Love Affair’s hit single, “Blind,” or MacLean showcasing his own tracks (wherein the aforementioned “Happy House” single is included), the energy stays high here, the beat rarely strays from 4/4, and that future that’s coming looks very bright indeed.

Future Perfect:
01 Hawkwind – “10 Seconds of Forever” – (United Artists Records)
02 The Juan MacLean – “The Simple Life” – (DFA)
03 Force Of Nature – “I-Ight” – (Mule Music)
04 Putsch 79 – “Gibson” – (White Label)
05 Hercules and Love Affair – “Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix)” – (DFA)
06 Todd Terje – “Wanda Rode Again” – (RVNG)
07 Cashmere – “Say U Will” – (Data Records)
08 The Reese Project – “Direct Me (Joey Negro Remix)” – (Network)
09 The Juan MacLean – “Happy House” – (DFA)
10 Soulwax – “NY Excuse (NY Lipps Version)” – (PIAS)
11 Charles B – “Lack Of Love” – (Desire Records)

XLR8R TV: What You Talkin’ Bout Willits? Part 10
Guitarist and electronic musician Christopher Willits continues his monthly series from SoundArts studio. In this episode, he explains how to integrate video footage with live performance using Ableton Live and Max/MSP/Jitter.

Here’s a little something you should know about. It’s underground sensation Dada Life and their just-released “Happy Hands & Happy Feet” EP. The boys are dropping this bomb in advance of their debut artist album Just Do The Dada (set for release later this spring / summer) and decided to offer you lovely people a download of the title track free of coinage.

The brainchild of Stockholm-based Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom, Dada Life doesn’t care about genres. They don’t care about smartness. They don’t care about the things you care about. Dada Life just wants to make you jump up and down. Then make you crash into a wall with a smile on your face. That’s exactly what’s gonna happen upon listening to the“Happy Hands & Happy Feet” EP. The original’s got a totally unique with a dirty 4/4 beat, bleepy effects and some truly warped vocals. Just download the tracks and see for yourself. On the remix front Dada Life secured the talents of Malente, Alex Gopher, Moonbotica and Phatzoo for some twisted alternate versions of the track.

Inspired by John Cage, Early Acid House, Trance, 60s Psychedelia and Little Richard, among other things, Dada Life has emerged with a unique sound that’s modeled from a broad canvas of musical stimulation. When performing as a live act Dada Life is one box of bananas, a couple of bottles of Champagne and a lot of sweat and broken equipment. On the other hand, Dada Life DJ-gigs tend to go the same way with an MPC and some controllers that enable the boys to play around with samples and loops even when they DJ. They also constantly produce their own remixes/edits of good tunes in order to have something unique to play during the sets. North American audiences will experience this firsthand when Dada Life takes to the States for a full tour later in 2009!

“Happy Hands & Happy Feet” is out now on The Hours. Be on the lookout for Dada Life’s debut artist CD Just Do The Dada this spring/early summer.

Detroit’s Movement 2009 Festival Lineup

Posted in Events, Festivals on March 30, 2009 by J.D.

Glitch Mob, Anthony Rother, Benga and Marc “MK” Kinchen are among the more than two dozen more performers named for Movement 2009, the annual electronic music festival that takes place each Memorial Day weekend in Detroit. The four acts join a roster of 60 DJs and live acts that already includes dance music heavy hitters such as the Prodigy, Afrika Bambaataa, Bassnectar, Derrick May, Carl Cox, Francois K, Z-Trip, Rick Wade and previous festival artistic directors Carl Craig and Kevin Saunderson.

The festival runs May 23-25 in Detroit’s Hart Plaza, while The Prodigy will perform at an official opening party on May 22 at the Fillmore Detroit.

The Glitch Mob, Rother and Kinchen, who will join forces with Scotty Deep, are each planning live sets for the event. More performers are expected to be announced soon.

Movement — named Festival of the Year in 2008 by URB magazine, is currently selling discounted weekend passes for $40 at www.paxahau.com. Tickets for the Prodigy appearance start at $20 at www.livenation.com.

The 2008 edition of Movement drew more than 75,000 people, according to the festival’s producers — an increase of about 25 from the previous year. Festival spokesman James Canning says the Movement team is hoping that “a strong group of sponsors” as well as a dedicated fan base will keep the festival healthy despite an international downturn that’s hit Detroit hardest of all.

“Electronic fans are very loyal to the music,” Canning says. “Our lineup is very strong, so we’re hoping we see them again this year.”

The full list of current Movement 2009 performers includes: Adultnapper, Ellen Allien, Anthony Atalla, Bad Boy Bill, Afrika Bambaataa (live), Bassnectar, Nikola Baytala, Benny Benassi, Benga, Adam Beyer, Steve Bug, Busy P, Buzz Goree, Marco Carola, Mike Clark, Carl Cox, Carl Craig, Drumcell, Al Ester, Exchange Bureau (live) Nic Fanciulli, Dennis Ferrer, Flying Lotus (live), Mieka du Franx, Guy Gerber, Chuck Gibson a.k.a. *Extra Promo* New Phonat – Set Me Free EP (Exclusive)

Posted in Crunk, Disco, Electronic, Promotions on March 25, 2009 by J.D.

Two More tracks, just for you check below!!!

The eagerly awaited new EP from the Italian prodigy paves the way for his debut album release this spring.

The “Set Me Free EP” is a follow up to the innovative and critically acclaimed “Learn to Recycle” which was celebrated as one of the most adventurous pieces of electronic music to be released in 2008 and was described as the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody for the acid house generation’.
Support has come thick and fast for Phonat from top DJ’s such as Annie Mac, Annie Nightingale, Andy George, Rob Da Bank, Herve, Kissy Sellout and Pete Tong.

“Set Me Free”

“Set Me Free” is an uplifting and inspirational club track which draws together three separate themes from current house music – disco revivalism, rave revivalism and wonky fidget. It combines them in a fresh sounding summer anthem that unifies many aspects of underground dance within one, highly accessible track and shows that dance music, so often divided aggressively by sub genre, can unite defined by its similarities more than its differences.

The EP also contains a re-edit of “Set Me Free” by East London Nu Disco outfit, Tasmanian Disco Stampede, re-focussing the track on its more funky elements, for disco based dancefloors.

“Get Down My Dirty Street”

“Get Down My Dirty Street” is a unique and entertaining track, created from tiny fragmented micro-samples of different songs; rock, country, pop, soul, rap and metal, which start off playing as a stark disjointed chaos and slowly coalesce into a cohesive whole and then wonderfully form an upbeat party breaks bomb. Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face!

“Ho Visto Un Quadro Verde” – (“I’ve Seen a Green Picture”)

Finally, “Ho Visto Un Quadro Verde” shows off Phonat’s more minimal side – a trippy yet bouncey stripped back club tool which explores the sparse soundscapes of minimal house, yet doing so with a sense of charm and humour so rarely seen in that field!
The track name translates from Phonat’s native Italian as “I’ve Seen a Green Picture” and is derived from a drunken bet with a friend made when he was living in his native Florence, in which they invented a variety of surreal and ridiculous pretend song names, and bet that one day ‘when they were successful’ they would be able to release an album that actually included one of the names in the tracklisting!

The EP contains 3 unreleased Phonat tracks, all of which will appear on the album, plus a remix of ‘Set Me Free’ from Tasmanian Disco Stampede. Click here for the link to:
Phonat -“Set Me Free”
Phonat -“Get Down My Dirty Street”
where you can download 2-weeks ahead of the Beatport release date.

Here’s the link to the two other tracks
1. Phonat – Ho Visto Un Quadro Verde (extended mix) (6:26)
2. Phonat – Set me free (Tasmanian Disco Stampede Re-edit) (6:44)

NOW Available for download on Beatport

“Phonat has frequently stunned us with his none-more-innovative productions over the last few years, coming across like a hyperactive Daft Punk on happy pills…..You’re exhausted, perplexed, flabbergasted, and left with the feeling that all other music is boring, unimaginative, repetitive trash. Wow.” Data Transmission

“this guy F**ks with all the rules” Norman Cook

A-list DJs already supporting the EP include:

Andy George “Really really like this mate! Definitely going to play tomorrow, were standing in for Kissy Sellout!”
Don Diablo “Love the Tasmanian Disco Stampede re-edit…!”
Grum “I love Set Me Free”
Supermal “Love ‘Set me free’ cant wait to play it out, its totally awesome!”
The Young Punx “Massive for us, as you’d expect!”
