Armand Margjeka Releases His Second Masterpiece, Hummingbird on 6/10

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 29, 2014 by J.D.

Processed with VSCOcam with b5 presetArmand Margjeka captures the essence of the human brain; always thinking, always looking for a new thing. Working with Darrell Thorp (Beck, Outcast) and Chris Steffen (Ben Harper) to produce the upcoming album Hummingbird (June 10,2014)

Hummingbird is a step forward for singer/songwriter and musician, Armand Margjeka. For his second solo album, Margjeka hand-picked 10 songs from his long list of recordings to formHummingbird. This album represents whatever the listen thinks it does. Margjeka said: “I would rather not beat the listener to the punch and omit any possible influence the record might have that I didn’t even intend to bring but let the listener come to their own conclusions without any real guidance.” With a more mature approach than before and the desire to influence, Margjeka portrays his hope to interest and inspire his listeners through his sound and his create-your-own-meaning lyrics  found throughout Hummingbird.

Margjeka was born in Albania and raised on American music. The communist regime he grew up with was oppressive, but somehow a mix tape of American rock’n’roll found its way into his hands. Music videos and tapes of some of his favorite artists taught Margjeka more about the language than what he learned in school.  Armand Margjeka’s sophomore release Hummingbird is slated for a Spring 2014 release via PIPEANDGUN and Communicating Vessels.

Six Years – Imagination(Video)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 7, 2013 by J.D.

Six Years - ImaginationSix Years is a London duo: Vanessa Anne Redd (guitar/vocals/organ) and Marc Makarov (bass/vocals/drum machine/synth). This new duet project of the critically acclaimed band Rubicks is a much more grown up affair which captures raw performance, intimacy and mood over production. Think dark folk stories and dream-pop alloyed to Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, Brian Eno, Nick Cave with PJ Harvey, and you’ll be getting the sense of Six Years’ aural manifesto.

Recorded ‘as-live’ and true to performance in the 1234 Studios gallery space in Redchurch Street, the songs were bought to realisation soon after they were written for feel and authenticity. In other projects, Vanessa and Marc have recorded albums that have taken years to produce and release, Six Years is an antithesis of this, using basic, traditional recording methods and utilising the immediacy of releasing records in this the new digital world.

In their other incarnation as Rubicks, they supported luminaries such as Gary Numan and John Foxx on tour, also featuring on compilations published by Rough Trade Records and Modular Recordings. Rubicks have enjoyed considerable press attention, including song of the week for ‘Is This Love’ on BBC6 Music’s Breakfast Show.

Dreamlike and deliciously raw in the mix, subtle reverbed drum machine melds with the duo’s songs. ‘River Of Dark’ has a mournful country edginess and a sting in its tail; and the wonderful Kris Kristofferson cover with drum pattern staccato, ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’, was used in the new film ‘Riot On Redchurch Street’.

Six Years’ debut album ‘Rivers’ is mixed by Mark Ronson’s right hand man, hip producer Alan O’Connell who recently won Engineer of the Year at the MPG awards. They share the same vision, in balancing rough with smooth in the recordings.

Hot on the heels of their super-fabulous record launch at the glamorous South Place Hotel in Moorgate for the aftershow party of the aforementioned film premiere, screening as part of the East London Film Festival, Six Years now have a string of singles ready to roll, the first of which is ‘Imagination’, swiftly followed by the album ‘Rivers’, which is due out early next year.
