London’s Floating Points is often lumped in with the rest of the city’s burgeoning post-dubstep (or whatever it’s being called this week) scene, but it’s not unfair to say that 23-year-old Sam Shepherd is operating in his own sphere. Whether assembling tracks on his own, running the leftfield Eglo imprint with partner Alexander Nut, or leading the grandiose Floating Points Ensemble with a bevvy of live musicians, Shepherd clearly isn’t just another UK bass music producer. As this My Plastic People mix—made in tribute to the endangered Northeast London nightspot—proves, his tastes extend well beyond electronic music—much of the podcast focuses on jazz and funk gems from the 1970s, with only a few newer cuts making an appearance.

Download Martyn – XLR8R Podcast 125

Posted in Dub Step, Electronic, Funk, Funky, XLR8R Podcast on February 25, 2010 by J.D.

At this point, an artist like Martyn needs no introduction. Widely hailed as a leader when it comes to pushing sonic boundaries, particularly in the world of dubstep, we here at XLR8R are simply ecstatic that he’s put together an exclusive mix for our weekly podcast series. Fresh off the release of his genre-hopping Fabric 50 mix, here Martyn gets even more schizophrenic, somehow assembling a cohesive listen while delving into classic house and techno, heady hip-hop, avant-garde beats, new-wave pop, and more—he even kicks things off with a little bit of chillwave. Refusing to limit himself to a single sound or style, Martyn always pilots a unique course—the fun part is following along on the journey.

Download XLR8R Podcast 124: Soul Clap’s Boston Mix

Posted in Dj Mix, Electronic, Nu Disco, XLR8R Podcast on February 24, 2010 by J.D.

DJ veterans Eli Goldstein and Charles Levine not only oversee some of the city’s finest parties, they’ve also been busy taking their soulful, disco-infused brand of techno around the globe, producing all sorts of remixes and re-edits, and dropping the extremely well-received RnB FreE.P. On this mix, they’ve employed a number of their own concoctions, along with a few of their Beantown favorites, and cooked up a smooth, slow-burning musical journey that does Boston proud.

XLR8R Podcast 123 – Hot City

Posted in Dub Step, Funky, Nu Rave, Tropical, XLR8R Podcast on February 18, 2010 by J.D.

As with many underground UK producers, Hot City‘s true identity remains shrouded in mystery. Yet this shadowy figure’s tunes, often powered by bouncing beats, chopped vocal snippets, and dirty piano melodies while sounding something like the bastard child of Todd Edwards and the early days of MTV’s The Grind, continue to light up DJ sets on both sides of the pond, which is why we lured the elusive producer out of his rave cave to assemble this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Tomorrow night, intrepid London fans can also find Hot City coming out of hiding and performing as part of the How’s My Raving? VIP Crew alongside the legendary Egyptian Lover. Check this video for more details, or just dig into this party-starting mix of infectious house and garage selections.

XLR8R Podcast 122: Jubilee

Posted in 2 Step, Dj Mix, Dub Step, Electronic, Funky, Grime, XLR8R Podcast on February 7, 2010 by J.D.

Until now, the 2010 XLR8R Podcast series has been filled by heavy hitters from overseas, but we haven’t lost sight of all the great DJs on our own side of the pond. Take Jubilee (a.k.a. Jess Gentile), who regularly whips dancefloors into a frenzy with her rambunctious combination of bass-heavy electro, upfront house, UK funky, and plenty of tropical flavor that can be traced back to her younger days as a Miami Bass-worshipping Florida raver. Jubilee currently sets up shop in Brooklyn, where she heads up the Nightshifters label with Jason Forrest and the monthly Flashing Lights party with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres. And if you’re in Brooklyn tonight, you can catch her headlining our monthly TURRBOTAX® party, where she’ll undoubtedly be serving up a mix just as sizzling as this one.

Cooly G has delivered a slow-burning mix , playlist is littered with unknown artists, white-label tracks, and songs simply known as “exclusive.” Even better, the mix features live percussion provided by her pal Dezy Da Bongo Man.

Greena- XLR8R Podcast 119

Posted in Deep House, Dub Step, Electronic, Hip Hop, Nu Rave, Podcast, Techno, XLR8R Podcast on January 21, 2010 by J.D.

Yes, we know. In recent months XLR8R has been on London overdrive. Normally, we try to avoid endlessly stoking the hype machine, but these Brits are just making it so damn hard. It seems like every week a new producer magically pops up out of the London underground and breaks our brains with a mind-melting new spin on UK garage, funky, 2-step, house, and whatever other urban sounds are bubbling over there. This week, you can go ahead an add Greena to the list of artists to obsess over. On this exclusive mix, the 23-year-old Londoner and Night Slugs cohort whips together the usual assortment of dubplates and unreleased tunes from scene heavyweights like Untold, Brackles, Bok Bok, and Roska, but he also stretches his musical boundaries further than many of his contemporaries will dare, slotting in vintage techno, ghettotech, upfront house, and even some grime-flavored R&B. It may sound a bit schizophrenic, but Greena weaves his way between genres with ease, resulting in one particularly potent XLR8R podcast.

Motor City Drum Ensemble -XLR8R Podcast 119

Posted in Minimal House, Tech House, XLR8R Podcast on January 18, 2010 by J.D.

As his Motor City Drum Ensemble moniker implies, Stuttgart’s Danilo Plessow is a fan of classic Detroit techno, but, as this exclusive mix shows, the man also has an affinity for old-school Chicago house, not to mention vintage soul and disco. Through his Raw Cuts series and releases on the Four Roses label, Plessow has developed a hypnotic deep house sound that simultaneously reveres the past while remaining clearly focused on the future. After grooving to his productions for a couple years, here in the present we’re absolutely thrilled to add him to the XLR8R podcast stable.

Shortstuff -XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Dub Step, Funky, Grime, UK Garage, XLR8R Podcast on January 9, 2010 by J.D.

The bevy of music bubbling out of the London underground still doesn’t have a proper name, but we here at XLR8R are happy to keep lapping up the infectious mix of house, garage, funky, and bass sounds being produced by artists like Shortstuff. With only a handful of proper releases to his name—albeit on top-flight labels like Planet Mu, Ramp, and Berkane Sol—Shortstuff (a.k.a. Richard Attley) also runs the Blunted Robots label (with fellow XLR8R fave Brackles) and has quickly risen to the top of this nebulous scene.
