Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 10, 2015 by J.D.

CRMCD028_artwork-600x_Matthew Styles Rebel Rave 4Rebel Rave 4 is a scrupulous odyssey across three discs swarming with rare remixes and special cuts from the long-standing label Crosstown Rebels. Highlighting material from former Bloc Party performer turned solo star Kele Okereke, standoffs between Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs & Eats Everything and Jamie Jones & Luca C and interpretions from dance music greats Cassius, Dixon, Adam Beyer, Tale Of Us, Maceo Plex, Herbert & more, these are future classics to shift your senses.

Those that are familiar with Berlin-based Matthew Styles know that he stands for timeless curation and is armed with a meticulous musical style. The DJ’s favourite DJ steps up to curate the third disc of Crosstown Rebels’ Rebel Rave series. As former label manager, Matthew Styles shaped and sculpted the first five years of the label’s existence, giving him an unrivalled insight into its foundations. His selection and integration attests to this with well-concealed gems from the likes of Seth Troxler’s The Royal We, Radio Slave (Canvas), Josh Wink, Mr G, Matthew Jonson, Freaks and Rob Mello.

Putting together the track list for this mix, and listening to songs that spanned 12 years. I am still surprised by many of the records we worked all those years ago and how well many of those classics have stood the test of time. There is so much variety and it´s hard to pigeonhole, but I hope to have put some of my perspective on Crosstown Rebels.” Matthew Styles on Rebel Rave 4

Henrik Schwarz Instruments album out on Sony April 13th

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on March 10, 2015 by J.D.

Henrik_Schwarz_Instruments_artwork-600x_What’s left of my music if I have it played by Classical musicians and omit the most important element, the beats?” This question was the starting point for INSTRUMENTS, the new Henrik Schwarz album.

Four years have passed now since the Berlin musician and producer was first invited to have a selection of his House tracks played by an orchestra. Now the Tokyo Secret Orchestra has recorded seven pieces arranged for chamber orchestra that are reminiscent of the minimalism of Steve Reich and Michael Nyman not least in their poetry and magnetic pull.

The last ten years have seen quite a few Classical performances of electronic club music. But many of these were in the “classic rock” tradition of the 1970’s, when symphony orchestras played the big pop hits of the day. “In most cases, electronic beats were then mixed into the orchestral arrangements, but I always found that a bit halfhearted”, says Schwarz. He wasn’t interested in so called Crossover; what interested him was what happens when club music is transferred to a body of Classical instruments. “I wanted to see whether this music still means anything when you take away all the synthetic sounds and the beats.”This prompted Henrik Schwarz to experiment with the scores, working together with arranger Johannes Brecht and various ensembles, without any computer sounds or acoustic percussion instruments that supply a rhythm in 4/4 time.

The recordings made in Japan supplied the source material for the album INSTRUMENTS. Seven pieces are rearranged here for Classical instruments, from Henrik Schwarz’s club hit “Walk Music” (which he used in the new arrangement as an opener for his live sets for a long time) through “Wamims”, the version of a 2006 remix, to the only piece on the record that is new and previously unreleased: “In Björndal”.

All the pieces have been arranged for strings (violins, violas, cellos and double bass) joined by low woodwind (bass flute, bass clarinet and bassoon) that not only supply individual timbres, but they are also a source of rhythm. In this context, the focus is on the magic and the magnetic power of minimalism, something that American composer Steve Reich used to influence the pop and techno scene with his cleverly interlocking rhythmic chains.

Right at the outset of “Walk Music”, we are offered a magical combination of single, lyrical notes from the strings and mysterious vibraphone figures in the background. And the following track, “Marvin”, literally sprouts from a single note that is constantly repeated. The piece “In Björndal” radiates a curious and seductive melancholy magic and time and time again, production techniques from electronic music such as loops or lowcuts are transformed into orchestral arrangements.

The result is a new kind of music played on Classical instruments. a music that doesn’t deny its roots in the club world and could only be created on the computer; a music that manages to transport the energy of electronic dance music to the Classical concert hall – with the bass drum only present in the listener’s head.

Jaust – We Need a New Life feat remixes from Alex Banks, Xinobi & more

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on October 24, 2014 by J.D.

Jaust - We Need A New Life feat James Dean Wells LOW-RES
Artist: Jaust
Title: We Need a New Life feat James Dean Wells
Label: human label
Catalog: HUM-08
Format: Digital
Date: 11.24.14

Following his lorded debut single Feel the Smoke Rise, enigmatic producer Jaust takes the next steps towards his album Definites. Wearing an entirely different set of colours, We Need a New Life sees Jaust channel his passion for indie and 80’s synth pop. Featuring the vocal talents of James Dean Wells from he Gay Blades, this track will no doubt be finding itself fans in many corners.

Heading up the remixes, Monkeytown Records multi-instrumentalist Alex Banks rewires We Need a New Life in his own unmistakeable style. Taking influence from kaleidoscopic electronica and the LA beats movement in equal parts, his remix sits in no genre camp and is all the better for it.

Portuguese producer Xinobi runs with the remix baton for a 4/4 makeover. As the lead vocals take front and centre, hooking in from the get go before an infectious bass synth jumps into play. This one will take the doors off a disconcerting disco.

Mainlining noise and electro, Shengi makes We Need a New Life her own. Constructing a remix that retains the heart of the original, but opens the curtain to new landscape.

Completing the journey, pushing the limits as he did with Feel the Smoke Rise, Jaust himself grapples We Need a New Life. A cut up style that owes as much to Soulwax as it does to Aphex Twin, try putting this in a box and you will be hard pressed. Jaust is a producer writing his own rules.

‘Get Lost VII mixed by Craig Richards’ (Crosstown Rebels)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2014 by J.D.

CRMCD_027There aren’t many DJs you would choose to Get Lost with… However Craig Richards is certainly one. Following on from timeless Get Lost episodes from Acid Pauli and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Craig Richards is renowned for his role as resident and musical director at London’s fabric over the last 15 years. This is a rare insight into the aficionado and musical maverick’s all time favourite records from his 40 year old collection. The result is an extraordinary adventure named ‘Get Lost VII’ and a contender for mix of the year.

This is Craig’s eighth DJ Mix album, but this is his most personal to date, spanning the sonic landscape from the late 1980’s to the present day. The two discs pack as much as you would expect and more, with forwardthinking choices that are instantly gratifying but largely unrecognisable. Disc one is one for the serious music lovers and puts Mr Richard’s wealth of experience and vast influences into the spotlight, whilst disc two takes a darker ride through the late night abyss. The collection heeds hard to find rare gems such as Backroom Productions, Black Rascals, 2House and Kenny Larkin, as well as modern vinyl only treats by Mike Ozone, Ruf Dug, STL and Velvet Season & The Hearts of Gold. It also features tracks from Craig’s own groundbreaking label: The Nothing Special, with tracks from Trevino, Calibre, dBridge, Keith Tenniswood, Billy Nasty and Craig himself.

“‘Deep House’ – alongside ‘Brazil’ and the ‘World Cup’, they seem to be the most over-used two words of 2014. What is ‘Deep House’? Last year I played in Stockholm alongside a man who should know as he was there at its birth, Tyree Cooper. Tyree warmed up the room spinning mid-tempo, early 80’s Disco or, as he put it ‘House Music’ stating ‘it’s the music Frankie played before anyone had made a House record’.

Four decades after the Warehouse in Chicago closed, Deep House now means everything from European 120BPM Tech House to UK House that ex-Grime kids now make and of course, ‘Trad Deep House’ like the American stalwarts still make. What we thought we would do is take what we like that’s representing out there. Music that is good for your soul, music that you can still feel during that 8am cab-of-shame drive home.

“We have picked some of Get Physical’s deep moments and matched them up with some 90’s classics like DJ Pierre’s seminal ‘Jesus On My Mind’ and what’s considered by many aficionados as THE best Deep House record of that decade – Round Two’s ‘New Day’. We then dropped in some curveballs such as UK producer Moodymancs ‘Paint Black’, remixed of course by a godfather of Deep House Larry Heard and Mark E’s ‘Bog Dance’. Its old school meets future classics. It’s Mike Dunn and M.A.N.D.Y.. It’s Frankie’s ‘Tears’ and Anja’s ‘Stay Quiet’. It’s HOUSE in all its glory.”– Terry Farley, 2014

Federico Albanese”The Houseboat and the Moon REWORKED ” on Denovali Records

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 13, 2014 by J.D.

FedericoAlbanese_TheHouseboatAndTheMoonReworked_VinylMockupFEDERICO ALBANESE (IT/GER)
THE HOUSEBOAT AND THE MOON REWORKED
[LP|Digital], reworks by John Lemke, Saffronkeira, Franz Kirmann and Cassegrain
Release Date: August 29th 2014

FEDERICO ALBANESE is a composer born in Milan, Italy in 1982, and currently based in Berlin. Albanese’s compositions are airy and cinematic, blending classical music, electronics and psychedelia. Federico started studying piano and clarinet as a child before becoming fascinated by rock music. As a teenager he studied bass and became a self-taught guitarist and soon became one of the leading figures of Milan’s underground scene, performing in several bands. Influenced by black music, folk, electronic, modern and contemporary classical music his skills as a composer soon emerged.

In February 2014, Federico Albanese released his debut album entitled THE HOUSEBOAT AND THE MOON on Denovali Records. He recorded all of the piano parts with a 1969 German tape recorder, the Uher Royal Deluxe, which allowed him to catch all of the tiny hidden shades, the imperfections, the noises of the piano and its surrounding space. Federico melted this rarefied sound with electronics, live recordings, strings, and homemade instruments. The result was a combination of contrasts and colors with a variety of atmospheres that wonderfully represented Federico’s musical universe.

The idea to release an EP with reworks of songs from “The Houseboat and the Moon” took shape in Federico’s mind already while he was recording the album. He was fascinated by the idea of re-exploring the pieces, to put them in a different context, to give them to artists he loves and to see what would emerge from this. The result is a striking compilation of four reworks by Albanese’s fellow labelmates JOHN LEMKE, FRANZ KIRMANN of PIANO INTERRUPTED, SAFFRONKEIRA as well as by subliminal techno masterminds CASSEGRAIN, exploring a wide range of the spectrum of electronic music.

THE HOUSEBOAT AND THE MOON REWORKED will be released on Denovali August 29th as a limited vinyl/digital only release.
