“I wanted to create a journey with the music and see how significant the catalogue is becoming – could the mix tell a timeless story? I had to create new tracks for different moods when I started the mix, especially when I had to a bridge a gap between different emotions so they could naturally follow in a sequence I was ultimately happy with. This way I felt the mix turned into a positive challenge with more personality, combining a few forgotten back catalogue classics with unreleased material by the aLOLa artists.” – Omid 16B

The mix opens with a brand new track from Chicago’s Nick Stoynoff, the mellow, spacious, deep house vibes hinting at what is to come. Omid lifts the atmosphere beautifully with his own re-edit of Pop Out & Play’s “Corrosive Tongue”, before the rather tasty exclusive remix of Alex George’s stupendous “The Illness” from Estonia’s rising star, Spin Science takes over, channelling the vibes of early Chicago House firmly into a futuristic style.

As the mix flows and develops masterfully, Omid introduces the funked-up magnificent of Australia’s Eliot Tordoff, his own edit of the superbly titled and twisted “Dancing With Elephants”, and his own remix of the ferocious “Acid Wars” by mysterious newcomer Feroziana, whose “The Final Touch” on Bedrock has been a highlight in the Beatport Techno sales chart recently. The energy levels are starting to sizzle as “Hamsters Goosebumps” ushers in the first of a series of stunning productions by the master himself. The ethereal beauty of “Double You” is beyond compare whilst the clever guitar riff hook of “Dark Horse” is so distinctive that it immediately renders the track unforgettable.

The sultry female vocals of Voodoo Corporation’s “Inside Your Love” lift excitement levels even higher in a classic house style, before a new interpretation of the stone-cold classic, “Escape (Driving To Heaven)”, brings the mix to another section of exclusive new productions by Omid 16B. Acidic attitude, euphoric beauty and perfectly timed drops with lashings of atmosphere are the order of the day, as the mix becomes ever more enthralling, with Omid’s “Ending To Begin” into Spin Science & K Loveski (making their second appearance), before the mix is subtly brought down slowly to a joyous climax with the genius deep house vibes of “How To Love” and then closed with a cheeky riff from his classic “Water Ride”.

The phrase “master at work” is entirely appropriate here for Omid 16B as he has created a timeless, classic mix using purely tracks from his own aLOLa label. “Volume 4” is the perfect addition to the series of mix compilations, combining forgotten back catalogue classics with unreleased material by aLOLa artists, and another amazing glimpse into the label’s historic brilliance.

Bio
Etnik, born in 1992, is known as the Wunderkind of the new German techno scene; it only took him several gigs in Hamburg’s Baalsaal to land him a record deal. But the most fascinating and refreshing thing about Etnik isn’t his young age, it’s his uncompromising and incredibly individual style.
Etnik (incidentally also his real name) grew up in Hamburg to Albanian parents who supported him greatly on his road to musical discovery. Whilst his classmates were out grinding to r’n’b and hip-hop, Etnik stayed in and experimented with beats and bleeps to create his very own definitiv sound. His aim: to invent an new, elegant form of techno.

Instead of piling his music with layers and layers of synths and noises, Etnik does away with surplus sounds and concentrates on the core. His music is to the point and avoids gimmicks so often employed by his contemporaries. He dresses dapper in suits to perform. Simple and stylish. Shaken, not stirred. Musically he found inspiration in the songs of modern artists such as Boys Noize, Tiga, D.I.M. and Kraftwerk, but also in the compositions of classical composers like Johann Sebastian Bach. Maybe that’s how a few bars of violon solo found it’s way into one of his tracks?

Etnik surprises with a collection of concentrated beats and home-made sawtooth synths; no matter how hard they get, the tracks maintain a charming analogue fragility and most importantly, soul. Etnik’s trademarks are his huge drops, which often come by surprise and sweep you off your feet. Etnik is a perfectionist – he worked on his tracks for two years before he judged them worthy enough to upload to Soundcloud.

Quality matters more than quantity. And this quality brought him immediate acclaim from Zombie Nation and TWR72 to name but a few. He became friends with SCNTST from Boyz Noize Records and together they released a few tracks on a New York label.

Etnik doesn’t just impress as a produce, but also as a DJ. He, however, doesn’t classify himself as either, rather as an entertainer with a concept. And by the way, the backwards N in his logo is actually a piece of a visualised version of a sawtooth-wave, just like the ones he uses in his music.

Altern 8 XMAS NO. 1 Campaign

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on November 28, 2013 by J.D.

altern8 xmasBringing the bass to this year’s Christmas Number 1 race, it’s Altern-8. It’s not the usual standard-issue Christmas Number 1 get-up admittedly, and as such, ’90s rave duo Altern-8 recently found themselves bemused by news of an online campaign intent on persuading the UK to swap Santa beards for the twosome’s signature dust masks. Activ-8 (Come With Me) was the highest charting track released by Mark Archer and Chris Peat of Stafford electronic act, Altern8. Peaking at Number 3, Activ-8 was originally held off the top spot by Michael Jackson’s Black or White, andVic Reeves And The Wonderstuff’s Dizzy back in November ’91, but now in 2013 could it finally be time for Activ-8 to take it all the way? “I have no idea why they chose us, or that song, but I’m very flattered!”, says Archer. At the time of writing, over 22,000 ravers (or possibly 40-something-dads-who-once-raved) have joined the campaign. So if basslines are your thing, look no further than this pulsating bad boy.(Officialcharts report)
Release Date: Available now
You can help Altern 8 storm the UK charts for No. 1 and let everyone know rave is alive & kicking by pre-ordering Activ 8
