In April, Dub Police figurehead Caspa returned with his sophomore album ‘Alpha Omega’, the long-awaited follow-up to his 2009 debut ‘Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening!’. Making his most decisive musical statement yet, the album runs the gamut of sounds and scenes that inspire Caspa’s music, and the bold move undoubtedly paid dividends. Now, the label is giving ‘Reach For The Sky’ a new lease of life as a single alongside a diverse selection of remixes from The Others, Break and RS4.

Featuring legendary soul singer Diane Charlemagne, who many will know as the voice of Goldie’s seminal track ‘Inner City Life’, ‘Reach For The Sky’ is a an ideal choice as the next single. Channeling rave’s break-driven sugar rush, the euphoric piano melodies perfectly compliment Charlemagne’s soaring vocals, while the tight drum and bass style edits and plunging bassline deliver a big soundsystem production.

Up first on remix duties, label stalwart The Others brings a darker edge to the track, suspending the vocals over lurching drums and heaving bassweight. Drum & bass innovator Break rarely does remixes, but jumped at the opportunity to get involved in this project, twisting the original and inserting intricate drum edits over a rolling rhythm, letting the vocals and melodies from the original set the tone before breaking out into a full on jungle brockout. Completing the package, upcoming talent RS4 delivers a stripped back and low-slung tech house mix utilizing the vocals to complement the funk-lined groove.

2013 has been an incredible year for Moscow-based artist Oiki. Having catapulted himself into the dance with his incendiary debut EP ‘Get It Now’, he’s shown bold creative scope with every genre-smelting twist and turn of his journey so far. Supported by BBC Radio 1, and scoring a coveted position in the Beatport Dubstep Top 10 with his last track ‘Are You Scared’, Oiki’s presence in electronic music has been unavoidable.

His forthcoming release ‘Ratchet’ continues this rich vein of form, showcasing Oiki’s skills to a whole new level. A boundary-breaking one-track special, brought to you by Dub Police, it’s yet another sure-fire smash from the Russian artist.

Igniting with an infectious ricochet riddim and head-twisting vocal textures, we’re then hurled face first into a carnal riff. Firing with loopy, techno-like tenacity it then slam-dunks into a heaving half-step and layers of rich bass.

Dynamic, daring and ultimately devastating, ‘unique’ is an almost impossible word to apply in dance music these days… But this insane fusion of industrial strength grit truly is one-of-a-kind.

A fittingly bold conclusion to Oiki’s incredible year, ‘Ratchet’ has already been tried and tested by Dub Police label boss Caspa with tremendous results. And if you’ve enjoyed his output this year… Just wait until you hear what he has in store for 2014!
