Mark your calendars! Tahiti 80, the critically acclaimed French sensation, is set to bring a fresh wave of sunshine to warm our hearts this winter with their newest album, The Past, The Present & The Possible, to be released on February 22, 2010 on the band’s own Human Sounds label.  The band’s song “Darlin” was also just remixed by John Talabot.  If you haven’t already grabbed it at  RCRD LBL, where is just premiered, then click HERE to stream/download the track.

Originally hailing from Paris and Rouen, Tahiti 80 has released four albums and nine EPs since their US debut in 1999, including the recent Solitary Bizness EP, which dropped in late October and is currently available on iTunes. Now comes the next move for these audacious Frenchmen: Comparable to Blur’s transition from Leisure toModern Life Is Rubbish,or perhaps clutching towards Bowie’s chameleon-like early day personas, The Past, The Present & The Possible is T80s most radical departure yet.

Tahiti 80 is now a six-piece unit. The additions include long time touring members Julien Barbagallo & Raphaël Léger on backing vocals, keyboards, and percussions/drums changing the position of co-writer Sylvain Marchand due to chronic ear damage.  Their influences seemed to align, leading them to call The Past, The Present & The Possible both willingly and reluctantly “our Postmodern album.” It’s is by far the tightest, most complex and thoughtful instrumentation of the band’s career. Many first time happenings include Xavier programming beats for a record and Médéric Gontier singing lead on the warm, acoustic breezes of “Want Some?”. “Defender”, PPP’s opening track shows no mercy to the listener, building a new layer of infectiousness every thirty seconds.  In a same breath, the lyrics deliver the emotional content to either sing along or just soulfully listen.

Produced by Xavier Boyer and Pedro Resende, and mixed by Tahiti alumni Tony Lash (Wallpaper For The Soul, Axe Riverboy, Cardinal, Eric Matthews) and Tore Johansson (Puzzle, Cardigans, Franz Ferdinand), the album title is a nod to Factory Records Artwork Designer Peter Saville’sintroduction to Reasons To Be Cheerful; The Life & Work of Barney Bubbles: “The Past is the sum of strong roots, The Present is us living in our times, and The Possible is one’s interpretation of the future.”

The album represents this interpretation tenfold. While both The Past and The Present have taught us what to expect from the Tahiti lads, The Possibleis by far the tightest, most complex and thoughtful instrumentation of the band’s career.

When it comes to Franco-pop, Phoenix get the lion’s share of the attention, but Tahiti 80 have been at it almost as long (if not just as long) and have made four danceable, hook-filled albums.

Formed by multi instrumentalists Xavier Boyer, Médéric Gontier, Sylvain Marchand & Pedro Resende, Tahiti 80’s adventure began in the French cities of Rouen and Paris in the mid 90s. Their first full-length, Puzzle, recorded with Andy Chase (Ivy, Brookville) and featuring Eric Matthews and Adam Schlesinger, was released by Minty Fresh in the U.S. in 1999, and was critically acclaimed as a refreshingly upbeat nod to late 60s West Coast pop (particularly the Beach Boys). The album also placed Tahiti 80 squarely in the center of the  “French Pop Invasion” that was hitting the U.S., along with fellow French bands Phoenix and Air (most notably). Since that time, the ever-prolific Tahiti 80 has released three additional albums and eight EPs. The band’s current line-up has grown to include Raphael Leger and Julien Barbagallo.

T80’s ninth and latest EP, Solitary Bizness EP, is a prelude to their upcoming fifth album, The Past, The Present & The Possible, and represents the strongest experimentation of the band’s career while still maintaining the it’s signature sound.  Recorded in T80s “Tahitilab”, the new EP and album once again capture singer/guitarist Xavier Boyer’s breezy vocals and heartfelt lyrics, while infectious beats, rhythms and boops uncontrollably propel the mind and body. Both the EP and album are being released on T80s own label, Human Sounds(a reference to The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds).

The Past, The Present & The Possible will be coming your way shortly, featuring contributions from Tony Lash & Tore Johansson (both of whom have worked with the band for years). There will also be remixes by Château Marmont, Pilooski, John Talabot, and more!
