The votes have all been counted and it’s official — DJ Times magazine and Pioneer DJ are proud to announce that Markus Schulz has been voted America’s Best DJ for 2012.

The talented Miami-based DJ will be honored October 7 in Las Vegas for the ABDJ Closing Party, which will include a press reception at Marquee Nightclub at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. After being presented with his trophy–a special Gold-Plated Pioneer mixer—Markus will take to the decks along with special guest A-Trak to cap the wildest Columbus Day weekend Vegas has ever seen. Even better – the party is free!

“I’ve just found out the amazing news that I’ve been voted America’s Best DJ—it’s a huge honor and I want to thank everyone for their support,” said Markus Schulz from the road, as he continued his tour in support of “Scream,” his latest artist album on Armada Music. “It is has been an extraordinary time for dance music in the United States over the last couple of years. I’d also like to thank the promoters and all the industry people that have worked so hard throughout the years to help DJ culture come of age. Our scene has been built from a foundation of respect and admiration for the music. When I’m on stage doing what I love every week, winning awards is the last thing on my mind. So to win this really means an incredible amount to me, and I am humbled by everyone out there who believes in what I do. I’d like to thank DJ Times, its readership and my hugely loyal fans for their incredible degree of support in this. I’m very proud to represent the booming scene in the US.”

While most of the votes were cast online at the America’s Best DJ website, the America’s Best DJ Summer Tour Presented by Pioneer DJ & DJ Times supported the contest by allowing fans to vote in-person at 20+ club and festival events.

“As always, Pioneer congratulates all the DJs nominated for America’s Best DJ, and we would like to offer special congratulations to Markus Schulz, this year’s winner,”said David “Davey Dave” Arevalo, Sr. Manager – Marketing/Artist Relations for Pioneer Electronics (USA)“Markus has been a leading DJ/producer for two decades now and he’s cultivated a loyal and lasting fanbase. By creating exciting music and maintaining one of the game’s busiest touring schedules, which includes top festivals and club venues, he has helped spread DJ culture around the globe. For all of these accomplishments, he richly deserves this award.”

“I’m very happy to see Markus win America’s Best DJ,” said Sol ShaferDirector of Special Operations & Music, Tao Group, which oversees Marquee Nightclub &Dayclub. “For almost the past decade, I have seen him make people smile and dance—and this is an achievement that is well deserved.”

Additionally, a lucky ABDJ voter (plus a guest) will be flown to Vegas for the festivities. Stay tuned – we’ll announce our Grand Prize winner very soon!

L’Étranger – Falling For You

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , on March 1, 2012 by J.D.

Falling For You‘ is the debut single from English Producer Ben Thomas akaL’Étranger.
As the title suggests this is a love song, but by no means a conventional one. The beginning quote; from the french writer Albert Camus (where L’Étrangertakes his name from), talks about how love starts as a comedy, progresses into much more of a drama, and ends as a tragedy.
The track reflects this, representing each colour of the wide emotional spectrum that is love.
A smooth funky bass, staccato guitars, modulated synths and piano, are woven together by L’Étranger‘s contemporary, yet complex electro-house Production style. Driven on by bouncing hi-hats and ear perforating kicks and snares.
For Brontë.

  • Time: 12pm – 12am
  • Location: Zrce Beach, Novalja, Island of Pag
  • Price: £99 for all the 3 nights

Proving to be one of the most sought after events of 2012, the hype building around this year’s Hideout Festival is testament to the outstanding line-up and stunning beachside location. Now there is even more reason to travel to Croatia this summer, as we can announce another string of phenomenal acts to add to the already extensive 3 night line-up

We can now announce 30 new additions to the listings, including a string of huge name, world-class acts that are set to make the event even surpass it’s debut in 2011.

The Festival now boasts a DJ set from one of the biggest acts in drum & bass and dubstep – Chase & Status, who have recently been nominated for Best British Band in the Brit Awards.

Benga will be joining his counterpart Skream to form their now legendary dubstep duo. The new BBC Radio 1 ‘In New DJ’s We Trust’ DJ will be stepping up to the plate and spinning some innovative dubstep sounds alongside his long-standing musical collaborator.

German act Loco Dice is now set to add his unique take on house and techno to the line-up, while Resident Advisor’s 2011 2nd best DJ in the world Seth Troxler has also been confirmed.

Dubstep favourite SBTRKT will be bringing big beats from behind his mask, while Canadian act and owner of Turbo Recordings Tiga will also be stepping up to the plate.

Ticket holders can also now expect to hear one of the original pioneers of drum & bass Shy FX, head honcho of Digital Soundboy, as well as Redlight, who’s recently released single ‘Get Out my Head’ is set to storm into the charts this week.

Hideout is also welcoming into it’s elite assembly the likes of huge Canadian talent Art Department, global electronic leaders Aeroplane, Scuba, Simian and Mobile Disco to name but a few. The full and final line-up can be viewed below and is also available on Hideout Festival’s Facebook page and all-new website.

With all this confirmed and yet more added extras to come, Hideout Festival 2012 really is proving itself to be the essential festival of this summer and is in place to surpass the calibre set by last year’s event.

Not for the faint-hearted, Hideout 2012 will once again combine the stamina of a beach holiday with the intense euphoria of the most turbo charged electronic festival.

2012 early bird tickets have already sold out and despite the unbridled sell-out success of last year’s inaugural festival, standard tickets remain at a mere £99 for all the 3 nights.

Stay alert for updates on boat parties coming soon, which will be announced on their Facebook and Twitterpages, plus sign up to the Hideout Festival newsletter to avoid missing out – www.hideoutfestival.com.

Michael Kiwanuka wins BBC Sound of 2012

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 6, 2012 by J.D.

Soul singer Michael Kiwanuka has come top of the BBC Sound of 2012 list, which aims to showcase the best rising music stars for the year ahead.

With a voice that has won comparisons to Bill Withers, the 24-year-old has already supported Adele on tour.

The Sound of 2012 list was compiled using tips from 184 key UK-based music critics, broadcasters and bloggers.

Now in its tenth year, previous winners include Jessie J, Adele, Mika, Ellie Goulding, Corinne Bailey Rae and Keane.

Kiwanuka, from London, cites influences ranging from Otis Redding and Bob Dylan to Miles Davis.

He started out as a session guitarist, working with Tinie Tempah’s producer Labrinth, before stepping in front of the microphone and signing to the Communion label, which was set up by Mumford and Sons’ Ben Lovett.

He said: “I never expected to be recognised in this way.

“It’s a great surprise and it means a lot that people are accepting the music they’ve heard so far, and it will bring the music to many more people, which for any musician is a great privilege.”

Kiwanuka came ahead of US R&B singer Frank Ocean (Listen), who has worked with Kanye West and Jay-Z and was at number two on the list.

New York rapper Azealia Banks was in third place, followed by high-octane dance DJ and producer Skrillex at four and Swedish electronic duo Niki & The Dove in fifth place.

The list was compiled using tips from 184 influential tastemakers, who each named their favourite three new acts.

The other previous winners are: Ellie Goulding (Sound of 2010), Little Boots (Sound of 2009), Adele (Sound of 2008), Mika (Sound of 2007), Corinne Bailey Rae (Sound of 2006), The Bravery (Sound of 2005), Keane (Sound of 2004) and 50 Cent (Sound of 2003).
