Ten years as a singer and guitar player in various modern rock and electro bands paved the way for French songwriter Arno Sojo’s new solo incarnation, of a somewhat different nature. Aptly named Sweet Gum Tree and influenced by the timeless beauty of refined vintage records, it merely embodies his quest for a smoother, more organic sound.

Initially intriguing French audiences from 2010 to 2012 with a trickle of singles and Eps showcasing a poetic chamber pop, praised as ‘lush’ and ‘spellbinding’ in the press, Sweet Gum Tree was soon sharing stages with such names as Heather Nova and Gaëtan Roussel.

This year saw him put the final touches to his forthcoming debut album, a collection of thoughtful bittersweet ballads tinged with dreamy melancholia. It was produced by David Odlum (Gemma Hayes) and Peter Deimel (Deus, Anna Calvi) at Studio Black Box in the French countryside. Among the guest musicians who joined the sessions, the stellar Isobel Campbell duets on ‘Bird of Passage’.

Not exactly a first for Arno, who in his early days already got to sing with one of his female icons, French popstar Buzy, when he started out as her live guitarist. That was before setting up his own band, Sojo Glider, in 2003. The pop-rock quartet released three albums and even recorded in New York with producer Malcolm Burn (Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith). Soon Arno was offered to collaborate with classical arranger Eric Voegelin, so the occasion arose to experiment with more acoustic textures, giving birth to Sweet Gum Tree.

Tindersticks drummer Earl Harvin, as well as Marty Willson-Piper (from Australian legends The Church), two of Arno’s strongest influences, not only played on the album but will also join Sweet Gum Tree’s live band, along with a string section, for his first UK tour this winter :

34 years after the first album he played on (the seminal Magazine’s post-punk classicReal Life), Barry has made an album that touches on the sonic stepping stones he’s used year by year to pave his way to the present. The memories and experience from performing and taking his work across the world with Magazine, the Bad Seeds, Iggy Pop, The Gun Club really come to life on the album.

Thirty-four years on from the first album he played on, the seminal Magazine’s post-punk classic “Real Life,” Barry has made an album that touches on the sonic stepping stones he’s used year by year to pave his way to the present. The memories and experience from performing and taking his work across the world with Magazine, the Bad Seeds, Iggy Pop, The Gun Club, writing for David Lynch, Danny Boyle, being nominated for the Mercury Prize, scoring an Olivier award-winning ballet, scooping the Best Short Story gong at Italy’s Piemonte Noir festival for his debut work of fiction and writing, directing and editing a movie whilst simultaneously heading back to grace the stage with a reformed Magazine during their triumphant 2009 tour have directly informed this album, coloring it with a steady, sure–handed experience that emanates from the swagger and fingertip fire of rock numbers to emotive, yearning noir ballads and new wave inflicted power pop.

Barry has ultimately channeled himself to make an album that is unmistakably Barry Adamson, gravitating finally to the core of who he is and revealing his findings to startling results.

With What Were You Hoping For?, Van Hunt kicks out the jams with a spare but dizzyingly vibrant meld of day-glo psychedelic soul with glammed-up riffs and the acerbic energy of punk.  The album sees the Grammy-winning musician/songwriter/producer turning up the volume on his genre-smashing songcraft and the results are altogether gripping.  From the breakneck “Watching You Go Crazy is Driving Me Insane” and “A Time Machine is My New Girlfriend” to the metallic k.o. of the album’s first single,”Eyes Like Pearls,” Hunt unleashes a sound that reverberates with caustic wit, passion, and the thrilling excitement of an artist operating at the peak of his powers.  Careening with exhilarating intensity and frenetic, inventive musicality, What Were You Hoping For? is Van Hunt’s most daring and provocative work to date.

“WHAT WERE YOU HOPING FOR?”ARRIVES SEPTEMBER 27

Free Download: “June”

“June” heralds the hugely anticipated release of Hunt’s extraordinary new album, What Were You Hoping For? .  The album – a joint venture between the Nashville-based Thirty Tigers and Hunt’s own label, godless-hotspot  – arrives in stores and at all digital retailers on September 27th.

“‘June’ was written to mirror a person’s complicated moodiness,” Hunt says. “Some people are called pessimists because of their persistent dourness – but I think they are optimists.  Sorely disappointed optimists.  The song is my attempt to make one, in particular, smile.”

Hunt will unveil a series of new tracks each month leading up to release of What Were You Hoping For? with free downloads available at a range of blogs and music websites.  Among them will be the album’s first single, “Eyes Like Pearls,” which will impact multi-format radio outlets nationwide later this summer.  In addition, free downloads will be available at Hunt’s newly relaunched official website, www.vanhunt.com.

Furthermore, the Los Angeles-based Hunt and his crack band plan to hit the road in the weeks surrounding the album’s release, marking his first national tour since 2008.  A full itinerary will be announced shortly.

Van Hunt first fell in thrall to the power of music from an early age, taking inspiration from a remarkable range of musicians and composers, spanning J.S. Bach to David Bowie, Thelonious Monk to Curtis Mayfield, Iggy Pop to The Isley Brothers.  The Dayton, Ohio-born musician soon made his way to Atlanta, where he drew acclaim for his creative production efforts and crafty songwriting, featured on recordings by such diverse artists as Dionne Farris, Joi, Rahsaan Patterson, and Cree Summer.  His own self-titled debut album arrived in 2004, instantly establishing Hunt as a distinctive and original talent with its idiosyncratic melding of R&B, neo-soul, funk, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll.  The equally inventive On The Jungle Floor followed two years later, highlighted by the single, “Character” as well as by a surprising cover of Iggy Pop & James Williamson’s Kill City classic, “No Sense Of Crime.”

In 2007, Hunt received a Grammy Award for “Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals,” honoring  “Family Affair,” a collaboration with John Legend and Joss Stone found on the 2006 Sly & The Family Stone tribute album, Different Strokes For Different Folks.  Hunt had previously received a 2005 “Best Urban/Alternative Performance” Grammy nomination for his breakthrough hit single, “Dust.”

Hunt’s third album, Popular, was slated for 2008 but remains officially unreleased.  Nevertheless, the album has become an underground sensation, a classic lost album hailed by LA Weekly as “a left-field stunner” for its “trippy fusion of funk grooves, punk guitar and soul vocals.”  In 2009, Hunt liberated a collection of B-sides, demos, remixes, and other rarities on the self-released collection, Use In Case Of Emergency (Rare Items From The Vault).

A charismatic and engaging live performer, Hunt also attracted critical praise touring both as headliner as well as alongside such diverse acts as Kanye West, The Roots, Coldplay, Mary J. Blige, Seal and Dave Matthews Band.

On February 8th, the eclectic, experimental hard rock project Praxis will release the latest creation, a bone-crunching new album titled Profanation: Preparation for a Coming Darkness.  The new album finds the trio once again collaborating with various musicians, this time with the spotlight clearly on lead vocalists.  Among them are Iggy Pop, System Of A Downs Serj Tankian, Mike Patton, RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ, Doctor Israel, Wu-Tang protégé Killah Priest and Jamaica-born toaster Hawk

The US release of Profanation comes with two live bonus tracks not included in the rare, Japan-only import.  The album is also one of the last recordings to feature the gothic futurist RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ, an incredibly multi-talented visual artist, hip hop icon, performance artist, and one of the most unique humans to patrol this planet.

Since 1992, the core members of Praxis – Buckethead (guitars), Bill Laswell (bass), and Brain (drums) – has churned out an eclectic series of albums rooted in aggressive avant-rock improv with slabs of hip-hop, psychedelic, funk thrown in.  On top of that, a constantly morphing army of innovators including John Zorn, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Yamantaka Eye(Boredoms), Grandmixer DXT, and scores more have contributed to past Praxis live and studio projects – each one a unique musical experiment.

This record features what Laswell and M.O.D. Technologies describe as the sequence of doom…

RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ starts it off with a digital metal notice of things to come.  He steps aside (for a few tracks) for Hawk to voice his opinion.  Dr Israel enters the hardcore fray with advice for the weary.  The leader Iggy offers a more mythical based solution.  Killah Priest, as always, looks to the distance stars for answers.  The mighty Serj Tanikan gives advice for the weak.  Mike Patton jumps to attention with a vocal assault to the brain.  The return of RAMM and the book of revelations follows.  Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins) makes small pieces of big rocks.  RAMM:ΣLL appears again, but a new style.  The project goes back to space courtesy of Yoshihide Otomo (Ground Zero) and wrapped up at the end of times Buckethead style. This completes your journey started 48 minutes ago.
