Darkstar – A Day’s Pay For A Day’s Work(Video)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on September 11, 2013 by J.D.

A_Day_s_Pay_Video_Still_lo_resFilmed in a community center in South London, the video captures the trio taking part in numerous trust-building exercises and activities, ranging from falling backwards into the arms of others to taking part in a conga drum ensemble. Directed by London-based writer/director Lucy Luscombe (http://lucyluscombe.com), it’s a beautifully apt visual accompaniment to a stirring single that candidly touches on the subjects of confidence, self-esteem and relationships.

The band are also set to announce a series of remix EPs, that sees several News From Nowhere stand out tracks reworked by the likes of Zomby, Motor City Drum Ensemble, the band themselves and more.

Mute is proud to announce the launch of a brand new label, Liberation Technologies. Following on from Mute’s long tradition of working with innovative artists, Liberation Technologies plans to extend that freedom and vision. Within this remit the label will work with highly distinctive and pioneering electronic musicians, some established, some new.

Citing reference from Mute’s original and continuing statement of intent, the label exists to give space to and encourage artists to experiment and challenge themselves, anonymously if they choose.

Liberation Technologies is headed by A & R man Patrick O’Neill, whose list of associates previous to joining Mute include Actress, T++, Moritz Von Oswald, Joy Orbison, Darkstar and Zomby. As important as the music itself, will be statement design, a commitment to vinyl product and inventive methods of releasing each work. There are also plans to branch out into live happenings in 2012.

The first release on the new label will be the ‘Spring EP’ by King Felix, a producer from Ann Arbor, Michigan who lives in Brooklyn and has also released music as Laurel Halo. ‘Spring EP’ is released on download and vinyl on 19 March 2012.

Says Daniel Miller, “Electronic music is part of Mute’s DNA and history, and this label is the latest expression of that.”

About Mute
Mute was founded by Daniel Miller in 1978, and since then has signed and developed some of the world’s most influential recording artists – including Depeche Mode, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yazoo, Goldfrapp and Erasure – and become home to a crop of emerging talent and recent signings including Apparat and S.C.U.M.

Whilst maintaining a firmly eclectic roster, from the earliest days of The Normal, Fad Gadget and DAF through to the techno era with artists such as Plastikman / Richie Hawtin and Speedy J, and to the present day with hybrid electronic artists such as Yeasayer and Liars.

Mute also looks after a catalogue of seminal artists such as Can and Cabaret Voltaire.

SVET003: Piece of Shh – Diablo Riddim EP snippets by Svetlana Industries

SVETLANA INDUSTRIES IS PROUD TO PRESENT ITS THIRD VINYL RELEASE, THE DEBUT 12” FROM
PIECE OF SHH, WITH REMIXES FROM ZOMBY AND HEKTAGON.
If the number of documentary makers, photographers, journalists and general seekers currently wandering the streets of Belgrade is any indication, Eastern Europe is having some kind of moment.
With the huge attendance at EXIT festival (predominantly from the UK), the coverage of the Russian beats scene, and the mushrooming festival scene along Croatia’s Adriatic coast, it’s obvious that a wave is building and bringing a lot of interesting artists and scenes forward in its wake.
But although the Iron Curtain is long fallen, the information gap between East and West persists. So perhaps this recent flood of curiosity for hidden treasures from the Eastern side of the Berlin wall is the perfect time for Piece of Shh, a.k.a. Serbian producer Goran Simonoski, to be dropping his debut solo release.
There is a deeper back-story, of course. Because Goran isn’t another fresh-faced young beatmaker from the ‘burbs. Rather, he is one of the longest standing producers on the scene in Belgrade. One listen to his sound tells you this is a producer fully schooled in the history and context of global bass music: Rhythm & Sound, UK Garage, Wordsound, El-B, Modeselektor, all the stuff going on in the early to mid 2000s when no one gave much of a damn outside of an enlightened few. Combine this with the fact that Goran cut his production teeth in a period where Serbia was possibly one of the most ‘difficult’ places on the planet – with an ugly civil war and a decade of sanctions and isolation – and you get an idea of what we’re talking about.
Growing up and working in this kind of environment, it’s no wonder Goran is something of a gritty individualist, who has worked in relative isolation to develop his own sound, somewhere at the indefinable point where dubstep meets roots reggae and minimalism. He also adopts a stubbornly independent stance, doing what feels right and nothing else. He was recently invited to play ten live dates in the USA. Once there he somehow got hold of 750 trucker caps and started throwing them into the audience in the middle of his live set, just to get the vibe going.
In the early 2000s, in the days before Twitter and Facebook and online access to XLR8R, he somehow discovered Horsepower Productions, got excited and started to smuggle in vinyl and beam it out weekly on Serbia’s famous B92 radio station in a late night radio show. About the same time he was involved in setting up the Dis-patch festival, which has brought luminaries like Kode9, 2562 and Pan Sonic to Belgrade.
His recording career started with the Belgradeyard Sound System, a heavy jazz influenced group that combined Goran’s production with live musicians and was one of the few Serbian acts to achieve success outside its borders, releasing a 7” on Berlin’s Ear Wax label and being featured by Bonobo on his Solid Steel mix CD for Ninja Tune as well as being selected to work with acclaimed UK choreographer Charles Linehan on an international project.
More recently he scored major success as one half of Cheap And Deep, whose Words, Breaths and Pauses 12”, put out through Berlin’s infamous Hardwax, got onto the playlists of Marcel Dettman,Josh Wink, The Black Dog, Laurent Garnier, DJ Hell, Surgeon and charted at #1 in Grooves Magazine among others.
We’re delighted to include two heavy hitting remixes on the record. The first is from Zomby who probably at this point needs no introduction. This is the first tune he’s dropped since his remix for Actress back in March 2010 and it’s typically idiosyncratic and progressive. We chose the – in our opinion – highly underrated Spanish producer Hektagon to deliver the second remix, and it’s a banger, combining dancefloor heat with some kind of anthemic minimal techno. The release has been played on BBC Radio 1 and Rinse as well as the wider universe.
The release continues Svetlana Industries’ visual collaboration with German designers Nous Sommes Des Soleils, and the mastering is from the incomparable Transition Studios in South London. Vinyl drops 8 November in all good stores, with digital to follow on 22 November.

This Friday’s FACT session is packed with exclusives, and comes mixed by the more than able hands of RAMP Recordings boss Tom Kerridge.

The label debuted mid-way through the last decade, releasing leftfield hip-hop from the likes of Count Bass D and Kankick. 2008 saw the label hit second gear in terms of productivity, and with it, a shift in focus to the UK’s underground dance music spectrum, with releases arriving from Zomby, FaltyDL, 2562 and Taz Buckfaster.

2009 was marked by a Zomby album, One Foot Ahead of the Other, alongside singles from Shortstuff, Hot City and Flying Lotus, while 2010 has seen Ramp enter its album stage proper, with P.U.D.G.E’s Idiot Box, Maxmillion Dunbar’s Cool Water and Shortstuff’s Summer of Shortstuff 10” project. Kerridge doesn’t just run Ramp of course, he also handles the few-more-shady BRAiNMATH label, which has spent the last few years peddling one-sided, limited vinyl releases from the likes of Untold, Airhead, James Blake and Bakongo, while his newest venture, PTN, sees him indulge his love of house music, with releases so far from Breach, Hackman, Doc Daneeka and Hypno.

As you might expect, more full-length offerings are pencilled in for 2011; read our interview with Kerridge over the page for an insight into what the label has on the horizon. And while you’re doing that, download his FACT mix, which features unreleased cuts from Brackles, DJ Dom, Hackman, T. Williams and more alongside classics from Two Lone Swordsmen and Pepe Braddock.

Since quietly dropping a couple of EPs on Hotflush Recordings last year, UK duo Mount Kimbie has shot into the stratosphere, as its recently released debut album, Crooks and Lovers, has taken the whole post-dubstep-future-bass-whatever-it’s-called continuum to a whole new audience. Perhaps it’s the inclusion of field recordings and other organic sounds, or maybe it’s the palpable sense of melancholy in their songs, but the youthful pair has folks practically salivating over their maiden journey to North America, which begins this Friday with a performance at Seattle’s Decibel Festival. Over the course of the following week, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos will trek across the continent before heading back across the pond; a full list of tour dates is here. To celebrate their touchdown on American shores, the boys have assembled this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Much like their own music, the mix finds the guys dabbling in dancefloor sonics, but the duo never abandons its love of woozy low-end hum and experimental wanderlust—not that we’d want them to.
